Hello Everyone,
Dr. Curtis Jones
On behalf of the Griffin-Spalding County School System, I want to congratulate Griffin High School and the GHS Bears football team for winning the state championship in Class AAAA football. At the dome last Saturday evening several things were very obvious. The first was that the GHS football team is coached well, played well, and represented our school system and community well. Second, the community turned out to support the team. It was an amazing crowd! Thirdly, hard work, dedication, and character were apparent and important in this conquest. If you saw the game then you know, like many previous games this season, GHS started with a deficit.  But they stayed poised, focused, and did not give up. By being confident and following through with what they had learned and practiced they were victorious.

Today the Atlanta Journal Constitution released its final poll of football teams. In Class AAAA it became very obvious why Griffin was the # 1 team. GHS was 15-0 for the season but along with their championship run they defeated #9-Statesboro, #8-Stockbridge, #6-Wayne County, #3-Carrollton, and #2-Sandy Creek. It is apparent that Griffin played a tough schedule and that this victory is well deserved. Congrats to Coach DeVoursney, Rusty Easom (defensive coordinator), Justin Rogers (offensive coordinator), and all the players.

I am friends with Carrollton's superintendent, Kent Edwards, and we met up before the game and wished each other luck.  A little tid-bit of information you probably didn't know is that the year Griffin-Spalding was named a distinguished Title 1 school district for a large school system Carrollton was named a distinguished Title 1 school district for a medium school system. So, compliments to Carrollton for a great game, an excellent season, and being state runner-ups.

Finally, it is my understanding that the community has put together a
parade/celebration for the football team for Wednesday (details below). This is just another indication that the community is proud of GHS's achievement and wants to help celebrate.

What an awesome way to start our holiday break!

Merry Christmas!

BEARS VICTORY BASH

To celebrate the GHS Bears as Class AAAA state champions a community pep rally will be held on Wednesday, December 18, from 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.

At 4:30 p.m. the GHS football players, marching band, and cheerleaders will march into the stadium.  During the celebration each GHS football player will be introduced and the band will perform the same half-time show that was performed at the Georgia Dome. Fans are asked to sit on the home side at Memorial Stadium.

This community-wide celebration is hosted by the Griffin High School Touchdown Club in conjunction with the City of Griffin and Spalding County.

Come celebrate with the new state champs!

CRESCENT SPELLING BEE CHAMPS

On Monday, Dec. 16, Crescent Elementary held their school spelling bee for 4th and 5th grade students.  The school wide winner is 4th grader Jolee Northrop (right) and the runner up is 5th grader, Sage Hutchinson (left).  The winner now advances to the county competition in January.

GRIFFIN RESA BRINGS JOY TO ATKINSON STUDENTS

Many years ago Griffin RESA staff began participating in the Salvation Army's Angel Tree program. Each year they alternate between their eight counties and choose one Special Needs classroom from the school district. They supply each student in that class with items from their Angel Tree wish list.

This was GSCS's year and Mrs. Franklin's Special Needs class at Atkinson Elementary was chosen. The students were surprised by Griffin RESA staff with presents and were overcome with excitement!

L-R: Mr. Allen, Atkinson principal; Denise Hogan, RESA staff; Jackie Hennings, RESA staff; Mrs. Franklin, Atkinson teacher; and Stephanie Gordy, RESA Executive Director.

This is my wish for you: peace of mind, prosperity through the year, happiness that multiplies, health for you and yours, fun around every corner, energy to chase your dreams, joy to fill your holidays!
