Dear GSCS Employees,
It has been another great week at the Griffin-Spalding County School System.
One of our major areas of focus this year is character education. This week students in several of our schools heard a character education program by Bob Mackey. Bob Mackey started M-Powering Choices, Inc., a non-profit organization created to design programs for young men and women that will empower them to make responsible choices in their lives. The programs he created specifically for students are The Power of the Knot, for young men, and The Power of the Purse, for young women. These programs emphasize making responsible choices, building character, self-confidence, self-discipline, and self-respect.
The Power of the Knot program is based on teaching male students how to tie a neck tie and the importance of how appearance can impact impressions. The results show that this simple step has a big impact on their self-image which leads to improved behavior, attendance, attitude, and academic performance.
The Power of the Purse is a workshop designed to help girls be inspired, be themselves, and believe in their potential. These core values provide our students with the fundamentals of good character and leadership.

This week I had the opportunity to visit Crescent Elementary when The Power of the Knot was being taught. What great stuff! I watched each student gain a huge sense of pride and respect as they learned how to tie a tie. It reminded me that character is indeed built and learned not just a natural trait. Every day, we as educators must demonstrate and teach
the character we want our students to display.
Thanks everybody,
Curtis
