Dr. Curtis Jones

UGA professor Peter Smagorinsky writes a series on Great Georgia Teachers. The Griffin-Spalding County School System's own Lisa Miller, a Moreland Road Elementary School kindergarten teacher, was a recent focus and appeared on the AJC school blog. Lisa is a graduate of our school system and sent her own children to the schools in this district.

Blog editor Maureen Downey wrote, "In past articles for the AJC's Get Schooled blog, I have made the case that teachers are the heart and soul of every school. Lisa Miller shows how big that heart can be and the kind of soul it grows.  Lisa Miller is more than a teacher in an isolated room of kids.  She has a bigger presence, one that uplifts her school and community and makes the educational experience critical and fulfilling.  That's hard to measure with numbers but tangible in terms of the inspiration and care that people recognize in her contributions.  That's my kind of teacher and one all Georgians can be proud to have in our schools."

The entire blog can be viewed here.

To Lisa, thank you for being an inspiration to our students and community. And to the rest of our staff, I thank you for the work you do each day in making Griffin-Spalding County School System a better place to work and learn.

Everyone, have a great weekend!

Curtis

Best of luck to our SkillsUSA students who are participating in the state competition this weekend!

S. schools are doing.  Georgia ranked 7th in overall achievement!

One of the researchers, Amy Hightower, says all eight researchers on this project is extremely tough on each state in their grading and and the improvement is in the level of quality in the education schools provide.

RRHS Students Participate in CrossFit Through a Grant

RRMS Crossfit

CrossFit is a well-rounded healthy lifestyles program that Rehoboth Road Middle School has underway.  During PE, students were asked what they had for dinner the night before, did some warm-ups as pictured above, and partnered to play wall ball, run 200 meters and do push-ups. And, here's the catch.  It was only the number of push-ups that counted toward their points for the day.

When asked, students say they love the program.  They eagerly looked at the board to see what the activities were for the day. All agreed that it was fun and interesting.

Teaching middle school students the fitness program is carrying through to life outside the school walls. One student said his dad was getting into the CrossFit fitness program and working on his upper body strength.

Ms. Johnson, the PE teacher, said, "We want our students to have healthy lifestyles and this is a good way to begin."

RRMS is partnering with CrossFit affiliate, CrossFit Fayette, who comes twice a week to facilitate workouts with the teachers and students, and plan with the teachers. This is a great opportunity to share a connection with a business working in the school.
