Recognition and appreciation

varies with individuals

 Dr. Curtis Jones

a message from
Superintendent Dr. Curtis Jones

Picture this: a team of professionals on the front lines of one of the most challenging, stressful, and ever-changing jobs known to man; serving the difficult, the needy, the disabled, and the disenfranchised with unwavering diligence and passionate conviction.

And if that were not enough, each one does so not because of accolades or money, but rather because of a heart for children.

For the most part, that is you-our employees.

I have often been asked what makes GSCS such a successful school system, and without hesitation I always give credit where it's due-we have a genuinely talented and dedicated group of teachers, leaders and support staff.

We appreciate each and every one of you.

We also believe some fun and lots of humor binds our hearts and our minds and creates a culture of joy in our labor.

Unfortunately, every minute of every day is filled with the business of teaching and learning with little time left for laughing and celebrating.

So, a big question for me is: how do we keep up spirits, continue to work effectively, and maintain health and sanity in such a fast-paced, highly stressful work environment? With the very best of intentions, we choose to recognize our employee's service and contributions to the students of this system by awarding pins and lanyards for continuous years of service, honors such as employee of the month, and teachers of the year.

But, not all employees value the same recognition. What do we do as educators when a strategy does not work as planned?

First, Evaluate

Did the pins and lanyards make employees feel appreciated, respected and valued? Yes, but . . . I don't think all of our employees felt that way.

Second, Solicit Feedback

Some of you believe that all of your years of service to this system should be recognized-not just your most recent tenure. And then there are some who believe that your years of service in your profession should be recognized because all of this experience benefits our students. I'm listening.

Third, Commit to Success by Change

Our desire to honor and recognize all employees is our commitment. And while we do believe that the integrity of the service pin must remain linked to continuous years of service to Griffin-Spalding, we agree that your experience as a professional should be worn conspicuously and proudly by the colored lanyard representing all of your years of service. This is true for both classified and certified employees.

Therefore, we will ask that each school and department designate a person who will serve as contact for employees who wish to exchange their lanyards for a color which accurately reflects their years of service. Send one list with the correct color, along with lanyards for exchange, and new lanyards will be sent.

So what is the bottom line? We covet your feedback and appreciate your service and hard work. Now, take time to laugh, sing, celebrate and enjoy working at one of the best school systems in this state.

Gray Lanyard = 0-5 years of service

Gold Lanyard = 6-10 years of service

Teal Lanyard = 11-20 years of service

Blue Lanyard = 21-40 years of service

Have a great weekend!

Curtis

Holiday Health and Safety Tips from the CDC

1. Wash your hands often. Keeping hands clean is one of the most important steps you can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. Wash your hands with soap and clean running water for at least 20 seconds.  if soap and clean water are not available, use an alcohol-based product.

2. Stay warm.  Cold temperatures can cause serious health problems, especially in infants and older adults. Stay dry, and dress warmly in several layers of loose-fitting, tightly woven clothing. Check on children, the elderly and pets.

3. Manage stress. The holidays don't need to take a toll on your health. Keep a check on over-commitment and over-spending. Balance work, home, and play. Get support from family and friends. Keep a relaxed and positive outlook. Get enough sleep.

4. Travel safely. Wether you are traveling across town or around the world, help ensure your trip is safe. Don't drink and drive, and don't let someone else drink and drive.  Wear a seat belt every time you drive or ride in a motor vehicle. Always buckle children in the car using a child safety restraint based on age, weight and height.

5. Eat healthy and be active. With balance and moderation, you can enjoy the holidays the healthy way. Choose more vegetables and fruit. Select just one or two of your favorites from the host of tempting foods. Find fun ways to stay active such as dancing to your favorite holiday music. Be active for at least 2 1/2 hours a week.
