Film Club Screening of "Theodora Goes Wild"
Tuesday, November 19, 2013 | 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM
Theodora Goes Wild (1936) Irene Dunne plays Theodora Lynn, a small-town girl who has written a racy best-selling novel under the pen name, Caroline Adams. Raised by her two maiden aunts, of Lynnfield, Connecticut, Theodora tries to keep Adams's true identity a secret. On a trip to New York to meet with her publisher, she meets an artist named Michael Grant (Melvyn Douglas) who threatens to expose her real identity. When Theodora discovers that Michael has a few secrets of his own, she turns the tables on him and goes "wild." Released a few months after My Man GodfreyTheodora Goes Wild was a huge box office hit. It also revealed that Dunne had a unique gift for comedy. So good was Dunne that she received her second Academy Award nomination for Best Actress-competing against fellow Hoosier, Carole Lombard.

South Loop Greener Together Contest
November 22, 2013- Contest entries/proposals due

Are you always looking for ways to go greener by ... riding a bike more? Recycling more? Composting? Using more energy efficient fixtures?

Do you wonder if you might be able to do more for the environment if you combined your efforts with your friends, neighbors, or co-workers?

Have you had an idea scratching at the back of your mind of a fun, green project to do others - to all go greener together?

If you answer "yes" to any of those questions, the Alliance for a Greener South Loop has just the incentive to help you take a next step in going greener:

MONEY!!

This year, for the 5th anniversary of our Greener South Loop Awards, we will be awarding a $1000 cash prize to implement a winning plan that engages folks to go GREENER TOGETHER in the South Loop.

The South Loop | Greener Together Contest will award the money to winners of the most engaging and green community project design for the South Loop. Let's break that down. . .

What's "engaging?" - a project that lots of folks will actually participate in.

What's "green?" - a project that makes an environmental impact, by contributing to the City's Sustainability Plan.

What's a "community?" -any group of folks who have something in common: living, working, teaching/learning, or playing. Work in the South Loop? It's your co-workers. Go to school in the South Loop? It's your staff, students, and families. Play in the South Loop? It's your gardening club or softball team members. Live in the South Loop? It's your neighbors, members of your condo or townhome association, etc.

To sum it up, contenders for the prize will be project designs that engage people in the South Loop to work together on a project that contributes to theCity's Sustainability Plan. The Winning Project will be well-thought out, with a clear environmental focus (aligned with at least one category in City's Sustainability Plan), a way to actively engage community members, a budget, and a four-month implementation timeline.

The winning prize of $1000, funded by our Contest Sponsors, will be awarded to implement the project.

What is the Contest Timetable? [dates to be finalized]

October 20, 2013:    Formal contest launch
November 22, 2013:   Completed applications due
December 5, 2013:    The Winning Project will be announced at our Awards Event
January - April, 2014:  Distribution of the cash award is contingent on a four-month implementation plan.

Lecture on Chicago School of Architecture
Glessner House Museum
Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at 7:00 PM
Glessner House Museum
Glessner House Museum, located at 1800 S. Prairie Avenue in Chicago's South Loop neighborhood, will host a lecture entitled The Chicago School of Architecture: Building the Modern City, 1880-1910 on Tuesday November 19, 2013 at 7:00pm.

The birth of the skyscraper in Chicago in the mid-1880s introduced a new direction for city architecture: upwards. But how and why was it that Chicago set the standard for high-rise buildings, not only across the U.S. but all over the world? This lecture by noted architectural historian Rolf Achilles will address those questions and much more. Copies of Achilles' new book (of the same title as the lecture) will be available for purchase and signing.

Glessner House Museum is a National Historic Landmark and the last surviving work by Richardson in Chicago. Completed in 1887, the museum is recognized nationwide for its groundbreaking architecture as well as its important collection of arts and crafts decorative arts.
