SOCIAL MEDIA

More Diners Tagging Photos in Restaurants on Instagram

The number of restaurant customers posting photos on Instagram grew in the third quarter according to monitoring platform MomentFeed.

The report tallied photos taken by consumers that were tagged to a specific restaurant location, not a restaurant brand's corporate Instagram account.

Measuring the increase in social media use can be correlated with foot traffic, sales and engagement.

Restaurateurs should be including their own social media tools to encourage engagement from diners. It's a low-cost high impact way to promote your brand.

CREDIT CARD SECURITY:
RESTAURANTS HIGHLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO BREACHES

One of the top stories of the recent holiday season was the massive credit card breach at Target and other major retailers.  However, in the last three years, research has shown that the majority of credit card breaches take place at restaurants.

Why are restaurants such easy targets?  Credit card purchases account for the majority of transactions at restaurants, and with many small transactions, hackers can steal many credit card numbers at once. Many restaurants have multiple locations, often with the same technology setup, so once thieves figure out how to crack one, it's easy to crack the others.  Restaurants usually have very easy passwords so managers can remember them.  This is a bad idea for obvious reasons - create passwords that are hard to figure out and change them often, especially when a manager leaves or gets fired.

Restaurants are notoriously lax when it comes to security and hackers know they are vulnerable.  When the Payment Application shares the same network with other restaurant business functions, the entire network is in scope of PCI, not just the POS portion, increasing the exposure.  Network isolation of the Payment Application is highly recommended by PCI. Other common failures include a lack of Firewall and/or Anti-Virus software updates, unsecured Wi-Fi on the POS network, the use of a weak Firewall or no Firewall at all.

To avoid credit card breaches in your restaurants, make sure all PCI Compliance Requirements (12 major, with over 200 sub-requirements) are followed, and that there are strict measures in place to keep customers' credit card data safe and secure from thieves.

MOBILE TECHNOLOGY STILL TRENDING

IN THE RESTAURANT INDUSTRY

Mobile devices continue to grow as important tools for consumers. Consumers' use of mobile devices for many activities including choosing a place to eat, reading reviews, ordering and paying for meals and reporting on the meal experience on social media sites will continue to grow in 2014.

According to the National Restaurant Association, research shows that 63% of consumers are using restaurant-related technology; most commonly, diners are looking up restaurant locations and directions online.

In order to take advantage of mobile searches, restaurant operators should invest in optimizing their websites for smartphones. Also, consider an app for your restaurant offering daily specials and incentives for subscribers.  It's just another way to reach your loyal customers.  Customized smartphone apps are a lot more affordable than they used to be.

This year, make sure to include a mobile presence in your online strategy if you haven't already taken the plunge into the world of mobile technology.
