2013 UN Year of Water Cooperation

Intended to raise awareness of both the possibilities of cooperation and the great need for effective water management given increases in demand and decreases in availability, UNESCO is spearheading activities. "The Year will highlight the history of successful water cooperation initiatives, as well as identify burning issues on water education, water diplomacy, trans-boundary water management, financing cooperation, national/international legal frameworks, and the linkages with the Millennium Development Goals. Perfect Toilet is Already Here?

A recent posting on Engineering for Change's website featured an article by Jason Kass, Engineers Without Borders member and founder of Toilets for Change in Haiti. Flood prone areas need a solution that neutralizes contamination before there is contact with the ground. Enter the CRAPPER: "the compact, rotating, aerobic, pollution-prevention, excreta reducer... ". The heart of the CRAPPER is a horizontally mounted drum that spins, just like a backyard composter. The human waste goes into the drum along with a simple, readily available bulking agent like sawdust or dried leaves. The mixing is the key - and makes the CRAPPER quite different from other composting toilets in poor countries." Read more...



Statistics on Water System Failure - Concerning

Knowing whether success has been achieved or not is an important component of WASH work. One simple measure is whether the system is still working three years after installation. Learn about CLTS and community engagement at the Wasrag World Water Summit V, June 21, Lisbon Portugal, but in the meantime, WASHPlus focused on CLTS in its Dec. 14th weekly newsletter. The issue includes some of the most recent studies and resources on community-led total sanitation (CLTS) and links to two other 2012 Weeklies on CLTS.

CLTS was developed as a tool to encourage communities to become 'open defecation free' and find their own, subsidy free, solution to toilets. Read More...
