Dear Parents, In the wake of the horrific incident at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, the school district, and the La Jolla Elementary School school community have been looking at additional safety and security measures that can be taken at our school site. The district has a task force charged with visiting each school and determining if essential elements of security are in place at each site, e.g. PA systems. We hope to be getting some additional security features as a result.
Additionally, the PTO and I have been reviewing our visitor and volunteer procedures. An essential element of a system for volunteers needs to include signing in and wearing identifying information at all times on campus. Although it adds an extra step to coming and going on site, I know you'll agree that it's worth it to ensure that we have a system whereby we know who is on campus at all times and that each person here is approved to volunteer.
This week we are implementing a new Visitor/Volunteer sign-in computer system in our front office We ask your cooperation in using the new system with fidelity. Please only enter the campus through the main office. Once there, please ensure that you sign in using the new system. It will print a badge for you to wear for the duration of your time on campus. We will be stopping people and asking them to sign in if they forget. You should also sign out when you leave campus. We know that it won't take long to make signing in and out a habit.
Thank you for your cooperation for the safety of our children,
Donna Tripi, Principal and Julie MacDonald, President of PTO
