Important Testing Information from Donna

Dear Parents,

All students in grades 2 - 5 in California take standardized testing in the spring of each year. The CSTs/STAR (California Standards Tests) are given in reading, language arts and math at all grade levels to test whether students have achieved the standards at their grade level. The CST/STAR is also given in science at grade 5.

Actual testing will begin NEXT Tuesday, April 30th for 4th and 5th grade, and some 2nd and 3rd grade students. There WILL be After School Programs next week (April 29th - May 3rd).

ALL 2nd - 5th grade students will be involved in testing on Tuesday May 7th, Wednesday May 8th and Thursday May 9th. There
WILL NOT be After School Programs this week (May 6th - 10th), except for After School Wednesday classes, which will be held.

Testing will begin promptly in the morning. If your child arrives at school after 9:00, he/she will remain in the office until a break time so as not to disrupt the testing environment for the other students. He/she will then be taking missed tests during make-up testing times.

Please speak to your child about the test experience.  It is important that children approach the test with seriousness and confidence. We count on your support in the following ways:
  • Please help alleviate any anxieties your child may have about the testing and encourage them to take the test seriously and to put in their best effort.
  • Please ensure that your child eats a wholesome, nutritious breakfast each day. There will be no snacks provided unless your classroom teacher has already made this arrangement with parents.
  • Please ensure that your child is well rested and ready to do his/her best work. Try not to schedule many activities after school.
  • There will not be homework assigned (except for home reading) and there will be no Knowledge College or After School Science during the first testing week. Teachers will begin to assign homework again when they have finished testing.  Fourth and fifth graders will be able to do home reading and computer programs during Knowledge College for the days that they are testing the second week.

If you have any questions about testing, please speak with your child's teacher, call me at (858) 454-7196 or feel free to email me at

Thank you,
Donna
