La Jolla Elementary School
Dear LJES Parents,

Your student has been using the ST Math software program at La Jolla Elementary using computers at school. The program has also been accessible from home computers.

Now ST Math is also accessible from tablets such as the iPad (see additional detail below).

In ST Math, students play visual math games designed to teach math concepts. Thanks to the homework feature, selected games are also available at home or on any other computer with Internet access. In addition to assigned games from your studentıs teacher, he or she will always have access to the games already passed. Encourage your student to play those games from home to review concepts and practice skills he or she has learned in ST Math. Your student will access the program just as he or she does at school. Please make sure only the student with the ST Math account plays the games.

Your student is used to the ST Math method, which involves solving often complex puzzles. The games start at very simple levels, which gradually get more difficult. Students may get temporarily "stuck" at a level. This is normal, and the classroom teacher can monitor whether he or she is stuck for too long. When they reach a learning hurdle, they should try to reason their way to a solution. The software gives constant instructive feedback to show why any answer is right or wrong. Your student should use this visual feedback to help figure out how to successfully solve the problems. Students should not be given the right answer just to pass a difficult level.

Platform-specific information:

  • If your computer is running Apple OSX, please do not use the Firefox browser as it has not been found to be fully stable with ST Math. Instead, use the native OSX browser Safari.
  • On Windows OS, all browsers should work as long as the version is up to date.

How to Set Up ST Math for Home Use on Computers:

1) Go to http://web.stmath.com/

2) Click on JiJi

3) Only if this is the first time ST Math is used at home, input the home activation code: LAJ73N-HDG-CW-KKW. Confirm any permissions the computer asks for.

4) The student will now be taken to the login screen he or she is familiar with from school where they would enter their unique picture password.

5) Optional: Create a bookmark or shortcut to make it easier to get to ST Math.

6) IF during the setup your browser asks you to upgrade to the latest version of Adobe Flash, please do so here: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

The next time your student accesses the web site at http://web.stmath.com/ on this computer, he or she will be taken straight to the login screen (no activation code required beyond the first time). There they will enter their picture password as they do at school to begin using JiJi at home.

Playing ST Math at Home:

The home content levels will be rotated by classroom teachers on a regular basis and at their discretion. The students may sometimes see levels that they have already completed along with levels that they have not completed. Students will also be able to access at home those levels they have already completed at school for review purposes (click on the "green mountain" button at the bottom of your home screen).

Please check with your teacher to understand their approach to the ST Math at home content.

Please do not hesitate to contact your classroom teacher, Larry Michaels (larrymichaels@me.com) or myself if you have questions or need assistance.
