About the PALCUS Leadership Awards

Since 1996, PALCUS has recognized and honored Portuguese-American individuals and organizations who have distinguished themselves through outstanding personal accomplishments and/or exemplary service to the community.  Awards are represented in a variety of fields including but not limited to Education, Artistic Achievement, Community Service, Public Service, Business/Entrepreneurship, Athletic Achievement, Scientific Achievement, Social Justice, Humanitarian Service and Philanthropy. Some past honorees have included Meredith Vieira, Nelly Furtado, Mel Ramos, Judge Phillip Rapoza, and Energy Secretary Ernest J. Moniz as well as numerous individuals and organizations in service to the Portuguese-American community. A list of all past honorees is attached here for your information.

Why leadership awards?

The PALCUS Leadership Awards program not only honors the accomplishments of these individuals and organizations but benefits our community by:

  • Fostering "Portuguese Pride" in Portuguese-Americans,
  • Providing inspiration to young Portuguese-Americans and Luso-descendents,
  • Cultivating a network of successful Portuguese-Americans in a broad range of fields that will strengthen opportunities for our community.

Who nominates the award candidates?

Nominations for leadership awards are made by PALCUS members. A benefit of PALCUS membership is the opportunity to nominate deserving individuals or organizations for Leadership Awards to be presented at the Annual PALCUS Leadership Awards Gala. A special email invitation to nominate candidates for the 2014 gala has recently been sent.  If you are a member-in-good-standing (dues paid for the current year) and have not received this "Members Only" email, please contact Elisabete Martins at palcus@palcus.org or (202) 466-4664 to verify your membership status and to receive a copy of the rules and nomination form. Deadline for nominations is Friday, May 9th, 2014.
