A Big Thank You To Our Corporate Partner, Bryn Mawr Trust Company!
A Message from the Executive Director

Imagine this: five year old children being able to spend a big chunk of every school day playing, exploring, and learning outside! While this has been a concept that has thrived in Northern Europe for more than fifty years, it is not yet the norm here in the States. However, there is growing grassroots movement of nature pre-schools opening up across the country and of more traditional pre-schools adding an outdoor/nature component to their program. It seems that the movement to get kids outside and connecting to nature that started with Richard Louv's book published in 2005 titled "No Child Left Inside, Saving our Children from Nature Deficit Disorder" is really starting to catch on!

Riverbend is thrilled to be adding to this movement with the introduction of a Kindergarten enrichment program. Starting in September, we will provide a half-day program that complements the traditional half-day Kindergarten. The program will align with PA Early Learning Standards and provide opportunities for children to develop their physical and mental health, deep connections with nature, and strong ties to their surrounding community in a safe, nurturing and positive environment.

The program will include a seasonally oriented, age appropriate, and balanced curriculum with significant time outside. Nature allows children the freedom to play and playing outside for prolonged periods has a positive effect on children's development and has been identified as the most common influence on the development of life-long conservation values.

"I sincerely believe that for the child, and for the parent seeking to guide him, it is not half so important to know as to feel when introducing a young child to the natural world. If facts are the seeds that later produce knowledge and wisdom, then the emotions and the impressions of the senses are the fertile soil in which the seeds must grow. The years of early childhood are the time to prepare the soil." -Rachel Carson, A Sense of Wonder

I believe as Rachel Carson believed, and I am so looking forward to meeting the 30 (15 in the morning and 15 in the afternoon) lucky children and their families that will be joining us in our inaugural Kindergarten Enrichment Program in September.

All the best,

laurie

"If we want children to flourish, to become truly empowered, then let us allow them to love the earth before we ask them to save it. Perhaps this is what Thoreau had in mind when he said, "the more slowly trees grow at first, the sounder they are at the core, and I think the same is true of human beings."
-David Sobel, Beyond Ecophobia
