 WORKSHOP 9:30AM-NOON
Voices Across Time: Using Music as a Primary Source to Study History
Melody Townsel, Instructor
Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, Dallas
This presentation will focus on the use of historical songs as primary and secondary sources for the study of U.S. history. Social studies textbooks are silent - but songs have a special power to span the breadth of human experience. Historians and teachers increasingly use paintings, photographs and cartoons as a primary source for teaching history - but using music in the classroom seems to be more challenging for many teachers. From tune to lyrics to sheet music and cover notes, music is one of most potent bearer of cultural ideas, attitudes, and movements.
Like works of literature and art that carry indelible messages from the time and place of their creation, musical compositions - especially those with written texts - serve as unparalleled source documents, loaded with historical meaning. Songs like "The Death of General Wolfe," a celebration of America's first bona fide war hero, give us an unparalleled look at what the nation's emerging ideas about honor in the face of wartime, and spirituals like "Wade in the Water" directly marry somber tonality with references to the Underground Railroad. In addition to its universal appeal and the social and cultural messages it imparts, music serves as one of the eight "learning styles" or modes of intelligence codified by educators such as Howard Gardner of Harvard University, among others. Moreover, studies have shown that music can help engage students otherwise disaffected by standard classroom techniques, and it helps improve students' overall learning and performance on tests. From tunes to lyrics to sheet music and cover notes, music is one of the most potent bearers of cultural ideas, attitudes, and movements.

WORKSHOP 9:30AM-NOON
Integration of Abilities at the Dallas Children's Theater
This workshop is based on Dr. Paul Baker's acclaimed exercises for creative growth. The course, taught at Booker T.
