Greetings Members and Friends, Like you, I want to know things and people who know things. At last month's Arts Schools Network Board of Directors' strategic planning retreat, we generated two smart goals: - Identify membership needs + provide resources to meet them.
- Be a valuable member of the arts learning ecosystem.
Our members' top request of Arts Schools Network is for data about member schools. We plan to partner with a dynamic data collection firm, and will soon have a range of data, searchable by topic, level, region, etc., available to our members. We have some new information on our annual conference October 22-25 in Denver, CO. The conference will give us another opportunity to learn about arts career pathways from early childhood to work, and will also feature the most student exhibitions and performances in our 31-year history. We'll hear a jazz group from New Orleans Center for Creative Arts and an electronic-symphonic group from Idaho Arts Charter. We'll also showcase local schools, including Denver School of the Arts, Kunsmiller Academy, and Colorado Springs Conservatory. .
We have planned a 400-student fully staged performance of "Carmina Burana" conducted by Guest Conductor, Dr. Larry Livingston, Director of Orchestras, University of Southern California, with students from Denver School of the Arts, Duke Ellington School of the Arts, and Orange County School of the Arts.
In addition to our arts school leader professional development strands, we are developing a strand for students, which will include a mini college fair and sessions on finding the right school, refining portfolios/auditions for admissions, securing financial aid, and more. We look forward to our conference in the fall, but now we celebrate this season! These are the days of endings and beginnings, graduations and acceptances, our ever-widening circles of knowledge, activities, and growth. Thank you for being a part of our world.
Sincerely, Kristy Callaway Executive Director image, Tarot Wheel of Fortune Have you renewed your ASN membership yet? If you renew by May 31, you'll be entered in our lottery, and could be one of several schools to win one free conference registration, a value of $588! We already have four winners...the next one could be you!

new member spotlight on
east los angeles performing arts academy at esteban e. torres high school, ca principal, carolyn mcknight
Our first Graduating Class of 2012 was extraordinary because many of the students helped create the school. They served on the school site council, which hired many of the teachers and our principal. ELAPAA is also extremely proud of graduating over 90% of the senior class. With close to 30% of our seniors being accepted into a Cal state or UC university.
ELAPAA has been fortunate to have partnered with L.A. Opera in bringing opera to the East Side, and giving our students the opportunity to perform in an opera.
The Academy Award-nominated producer (A Better LIfe) and Director of the film Twilight, held a viewing of the film A Better Life and a symposium for our students.
The Huntington Library and Gardens have partnered with ELAPAA, allowing ELAPAA to perform Shakespeare at its facility, and has graciously granted free access to our students and families.

The National YoungArts Foundation (YoungArts) congratulates the 50th class of U.S. Presidential Scholars, announced today by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. The 20 Scholars in the Arts, all 2014 YoungArts Winners, were nominated to The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars by YoungArts, and selected based on academic, civic and artistic achievement. The award, presented on behalf of the President of the United States, is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an artistically talented graduating high school senior. Each year, up to 141 high school seniors are recognized as U.S. Presidential Scholars for their accomplishments.
"The National YoungArts Foundation is proud to honor and celebrate the 2014 U.S. Presidential Scholars and the 50th Anniversary of this remarkable program," said Paul T. Lehr, President & CEO of the National YoungArts Foundation. "YoungArts has a long and rich history with this high honor, and our role as the sole nominating organization for the art awards is a cherished responsibility."
U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said, "The extraordinary young men and women being honored for the 50th anniversary of the Presidential Scholars have excelled in their educational, artistic and civic pursuits. They show all of us that when students challenge themselves and commit themselves to excellence, the results can be astounding. These scholars will help move our country forward and will have a lasting impact on their families, communities, and on our society. They represent the potential of all young citizens to lift up America."
