cab calloway summer school of the arts wilmington delaware
| |
Three summers ago, we started this program. Our first year we had 453 children in seats, created over 40 jobs and 60 volunteer opportunities. We made a small profit, which went back into the Cab Calloway School Fund (non profit). In our second summer we had over 600 children, created over 60 jobs and over 60 volunteer opportunities. We also received a 40,000 dollar grant to create a MacLab which is now in service in the CCSA middle school. We hired a full time executive director, paid her salary and made a profit. In our third year, we had over 700 kids and built a pilot program for Title 1 kids to receive scholarships, transportation and lunch. Again, a transforming experience for them by not only engaging them, but by letting them know that the path to CCSA was also open to them. It can be an incubator for learning to teach arts integrated academics, developing new curriculum, getting credits for personal development. It can be a platform for service learning. It can be a way to study and assess how learning takes place and its long term effects. It has been a transformational experience for kids from The Delaware School for the Deaf where they have no arts. After having four children scholarships to the summer program, we started an afterschool program at their school to extend their opportunities and to build an ongoing program which is not provided by their school district. calarts online course offering portfolio development workshop for artists & animators
| |
The CalArts Online Animation Portfolio Development Workshop is designed for students who are interested in exploring Concept Design and Visual Development, and enhancing their college application portfolios. Participation in this workshop does not imply an admissions advantage to CalArts or any other institution. In this workshop students are encouraged to express their creativity in as many ways as possible. Each week, different illustration styles are examined for inspiration. Students will produce exaggerated character designs that can be used as concepts for future animations, 3D models, graphic novel ideas, and gallery work. Students will work from life, using nude and costumed models, with different themes in mind. The class will also draw from films to learn about visual composition and story telling. This course focuses less on making perfect drawings and more on giving students an open arena to explore and learn to love drawing while broadening creative ideation and output. Learn more.

executive director's message
|
Greetings Members and Friends,
This is a special issue of our bi-weekly e-news that features summer opportunities of our member schools. Please continue to share your happenings with us, and we will continue to shine a spotlight on you.
Thank you for taking our membership survey last month! According to the results, you value the networking opportunities we provide, especially the exchange of information. And you want more webinars. You ask, and others respond.
We are conducting a follow-up survey (available through May 2) to ask our members what they want to know about other arts schools. The ASN Board of Directors will use this valuable information for our ongoing strategic planning at our meeting May 3 at NYU Tisch School of the Arts.
We would like to know what data you need, what questions have you recently asked colleagues and other arts schools leaders, and what information would you like from other member schools (ranked from least to most important) about:
- purpose of the school
- size and scope
- finances, fundraising
- governance and administrative structure
- faculty and staff
- facilities and equipment
- learning and information resources
- recruitment, auditions, portfolio reviews, enrollment, financial aid, record keeping
- parents, community
- evaluation, planning, projections
Your responses will help the Board of Directors prioritize our programs and services.

The National Artist Teacher Fellowship program recently announced Fellowship recipients for the thirteenth round of its national awards. Formerly known as the Surdna Arts Teachers Fellowship (SATF) based out of New York City, this prestigious program became known as the National Artist Teacher Fellowship (NATF) in July 2012 when it transitioned to the care of the Center for Arts in Education at the Boston Arts Academy under the leadership of Executive Director, Dr. Linda F. Twenty outstanding arts teachers, representing 17 specialized public arts high schools and arts-focused magnet and charter high schools from around the country, were chosen out of a worthy pool of 65 applicants and awarded $5,500 each to pursue their own creative study. The teachers excel in a broad spectrum of visual, performing, and literary arts.
