seismic shifts in the education landscape: what do they mean for arts education and policy?

title, seismic shifts in the education landscape: what do they mean for arts education and arts education policy?

by robert sabol

ABSTRACT

The field of education in the United States is in a period of unprecedented change. Educators in all disciplines are challenged to understand and respond to the waves of reform sweeping over the national education landscape. Linking these reforms to meaningful outcomes that will produce more rigorous and effective measures of quality and performance in our schools is an ongoing goal for all educators as they work to respond to calls for educational reform. Changes in the general field of education have direct implications for arts education policy and practice. Arts educators find themselves in the position of making sense of these landmark reforms and changes in the context of arts education and determining what courses of action and responses they should pursue on the road to meaningful reform. This report provides an overview of a selected number of contemporary developments in the general field of education, brief summaries of consequential studies and education-related reports, and an examination of some policy issues these developments and reports raise for arts educators as they work to shape the future landscape of arts education.

The event will feature a combination of formal presentations and panel discussions among scholars, policy makers, journalists, artists, and educators; practicums for arts educators; and opportunities for less formal conversation and engagement between attendees. It will feature cutting-edge research in the realm of arts careers as well as multimedia presentations, exhibits, and performances from artists currently in the workforce.

3 fundraising habits of supremely successful boards
guidestar
by jordan panas

In my work with nearly two thousand organizations, I've found that board members will stand on tiptoes to reach high standards if they know what's expected of them. They'll perform extraordinary feats, give unlimited time, combine all their talents for a common and great cause.

But if trustees don't understand their role, this enormous potential is reduced to a trickle, forced through a narrow institutional funnel.

In my book, The Fundraising Habits of Supremely Successful Boards, I discuss 25 habits that every board must adopt if they hope to raise substantial money. Here I'll focus on three.

Habit One: You Invest
Habit Two: Back to the Well
Habit Three: Beware of the Trojan Horse

national study of challenges facing nonprofit fundraising

The newly released study UnderDeveloped: A National Study of Challenges Facing Nonprofit Fundraising reveals that many nonprofits are stuck in a vicious cycle that threatens their ability to raise the resources they need to succeed. A joint project of CompassPoint and the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund, the report found high levels of turnover and lengthy vacancies in development director positions throughout the sector. More significantly, the study reveals deeper issues that contribute to instability in the development director role, including a lack of basic fundraising systems and inadequate attention to fund development among key board and staff leaders.

Key Findings
  • revolving door
  • help wanted
  • it's about more than one person
  • breaking the cycle

The Kennedy Center, through its affiliate VSA, proudly presents a unique opportunity for student-artists with disabilities from around the world to present their artwork side-by-side in an online exhibition. A selection of artwork from the online entries will be chosen for a live exhibition at the United States Department of Education in Washington D.C.

Yo Soy....Je Suis....I Am...My Family
Children with disabilities are encouraged to create a family portrait that illustrates themselves among the people that provide love, support, and encouragement in their lives - their families! Portraying themselves with some of the most important people in their lives gives testament to the idea that family - no matter how big or how small - help shape who we are and provide the foundation for who we will be.

Greetings Members and Friends,

Would you like your school to be designated as an ASN Exemplary School? Would you like to be recognized for innovation, integration, and community partnerships? Or maybe you believe you are an amazing alumn, an emerging leader, an outstanding school, or have research to share?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, we hope you will consider applying to our Exemplary School and/or Awards Programs. The deadline to submit your intent to apply is February 15th, after which the deadline for all support materials is March 15th. By April 15th of this year, you could be a designated Exemplary School and/or Award Winner!

Both are recognized at our annual conference in NYC October 22-25, and presented with an engraved bronze medallion. Award winners will receive one free conference registration to accept their award in person at NYU Tisch School for the Arts.

Many of our programs are highlighted in this e-news, and are created, run, and refined by our membership through our working committees. This week our board of directors will meet at the Houston High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA). We will be critically examining and strategically planning how we as an organization have met and will meet our mission, to promote excellence in arts education by inspiring and serving arts leaders, institutions, and organizations.

Arts Schools Network was founded in 1981 with the purpose to share best practices and model the way for the flourishing of arts schools everywhere. We invite you to be recognized and apply to our Exemplary School and Awards Programs. Through your successes, we all learn.

Is This Teacher on Your Campus?

We all have one...sometimes more than one. You know "That" teacher! The teacher who kids can't wait to get to his or her class. The teacher who always has kids engaged and in the palm of his or her hand with whatever art concept is being taught and any given day.

Yeah, you know the one.

ASN wants to hear from "That" teacher!

Best practice is defined as a teaching or instructional method that has been demonstrated by research to be an effective learning tool. By following educational research, teachers may offer students better learning programs that can improve academic achievement. So grab that teacher on your campus who makes a difference in the lives of kids everyday through quality instruction in the arts. Ask him or her to think about best practices in their classroom! My hope is that you will ask your teacher to download the form found at the link below and submit it to the ASN Best Practices Committee at the address listed on the form.

inaugural poet richard blanco, 'my story is america'
miami herald, jan 21 2012
by associated press
richard blanco

WASHINGTON - Miami-raised poet Richard Blanco has delivered an inaugural poem paying homage to the American experience.

Blanco, at age 44 the youngest ever inaugural poet, recited a poem that painted vivid scenes about America and included reflections on his experience growing up as Cuban exile in New York City and Miami.

Blanco was born in Spain but emigrated to the United States with his Cuban parents and lived in Miami. He was an engineer for South Miami before he took up poetry full-time. He now lives in Maine.

In addition to being the youngest ever inaugural poet, Blanco is the first Hispanic and the first openly gay person to serve in the role.

Blanco has published three books of poetry while maintaining his career as a consulting engineer.

Read the full text of Blanco's poem, One Today

One sun rose on us today, kindled over our shores,

peeking over the Smokies, greeting the faces

of the Great Lakes, spreading a simple truth

across the Great Plains, then charging across the Rockies.

national core arts standards finalized by national coalition
a conceptual framework for arts learning

nccas
The central purpose of education standards is to identify the learning that we want for all of our students and to drive improvement in the system that delivers that learning. Standards, therefore, should embody the key concepts, processes and traditions of study in each subject area, and articulate the aspirations of those invested in our schools-students, teachers, administrators, and the community at large. To realize that end goal, these new, voluntary National Core Arts Standards are framed by a definition of artistic literacy that includes philosophical foundations and lifelong goals, artistic processes and creative practices, standards that students should attain, and model cornerstone assessments by which they can be measured. The connective threads of this conceptual framework are designed to be understood by all stakeholders and, ultimately, to ensure success for both educators and students in the real world of the school.

measures for effective teaching
met
The MET project released progress reports as its research and analysis progressed. Through these reports, practitioners and policy makers have had quick access to the data developed through the project in order to begin thinking through the practical implications of the work prior to release of the final report.

In January 2013, the MET project released its third and final set of findings, which sought to answer three questions from practitioners and policy-makers: Can measures of effective teaching identify teachers who better help students learn?; How much weight should be placed on each measure of effective teaching when combining classroom observations, student surveys, and student achievement gains?; And how can teachers be assured trustworthy results from classroom observations?

Along with a brief summarizing all of the findings, and the three research papers detailing the technical methods, in January 2013 the MET project a released set principles for effective evaluation systems based on lessons learned over the three years of the study.

new study claims to figure out how to correctly evaluate teachers

Whether or not a teacher is good (and the right way to determine that) is the major issue in education today. How to figure out how to incorporate test scores, teachers' classroom manner, and any number of other factors into a holistic measurement of teacher ability has stymied everyone. But the end result of a three-year study by the Gates Foundation in schools around the country claims to have an answer...

In this current moment of economic uncertainty, America is once again turning to innovation as the way to ensure a prosperous future. Yet innovation remains tightly coupled with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math - the STEM subjects. Art + Design are poised to transform our economy in the 21st century just as Science and Technology did in the last century. We need to add Art + Design to the equation - to transform STEM into STEAM.

STEM + Art = STEAM

STEAM is a movement championed by the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and adopted widely by institutions, corporations, and individuals.

The objectives of the STEAM movement are:
  • Transform research policy to place Art + Design at the center of STEM
  • Encourage integration of Art + Design in K-20 education
  • Influence employers to hire artists and designers to drive innovation

training a new generation of leaders in the arts
at interlochen center for the arts
logan
In an increasingly networked and interconnected world, the traditional boundaries of time, space and information in the arts have expanded, bringing exciting opportunities but also many challenges. As arts and cultural organizations adapt to this time of great change, there is a growing need for innovative and committed leadership that is prepared to navigate the changing arts landscape. To meet this need, Interlochen Center for the Arts has established the Logan Arts Leadership Institute (LALI) with a mission to introduce young people to new ideas and help them understand the nature of leadership in the arts for the 21st century while providing the opportunities they will need to become leaders in the future.

LALI is being specifically created to reach a new generation of potential arts leaders: today's high school students and undergraduates who are living these changes in their own experiences every day. LALI will create an ongoing dialogue about the future of the field, as participants develop skills as problem-solvers, entrepreneurs, and communicators. Interlochen will serve as LALI's headquarters but the program's reach will be global: virtual seminars, social networks, and online learning tools like Lore will all empower high school students and undergraduates from around the world as they learn first-hand from new and experienced arts leaders of all generations who are themselves grappling with critical issues and new trends in arts leadership.

The LALI website will launch on February 4, unveiling online resources and activities to prepare for the first webinar. And as LALI moves forward, Interlochen is seeking future leaders in the arts -- current high school students and college undergraduates -- to participate in LALI's free webinars, panels, online discussions, and other virtual assignments and activities.

Students, educators, potential guest speakers, or anyone who would like to learn more about this worthwhile endeavor can follow LALI on Facebook and Twitter or sign up for updates on the LALI page on the Interlochen website, which features an updated schedule and all LALI related news.
