title, assessment on our own terms
by samuel hope and mark walt
ABSTRACT
Assessment is essential to all forms of work in the arts. Successful arts assessment concepts, patterns, and methods have evolved over many centuries. They are inherent in all arts teaching and central to art-making at all levels of proficiency and sophistication. And they work: achievements in the arts are among the highest in civilization. At present, these arts-based systems of assessment are increasingly pursued in a problematic context. Regnant assessment values and systems are often so highly technocratic, so narrowly focused on what can be counted easily, and so prosaically engineered for application on a massive scale that they are incompatible with the nature of arts assessment and regularly discount its value and its results. Means for responding and acting are needed that preserve the fundamental nature of arts teaching and learning. There are ways for those professionally concerned about the arts and arts teaching to reaffirm and rearticulate essential principles of artistic evaluation and, in the present environment, pursue applications of those principles in various forms of evaluation. Reaffirmation, rearticulation, and pursuit must be deeply rooted in an understanding of why these principles are essential for the progress of the arts disciplines and for arts-centered student learning. Such reaffirmation, rethinking, and rearticulation can establish the basis for explaining arts principles, achievements, and methods to others; debating when necessary; and ensuring the preservation of conditions that encourage the effective incorporation of new findings or capabilities in assessment into the ever-evolving assessment and evaluation systems developed by and suitable for the arts in ways that are compatible with their nature and the integrity of their practice.

| principal share leadership qualities | | ascd connected principals' blog december 31 2012 by dwight carter
Author and Leadership Consultant, Ken Blanchard, wrote in one of his books, "Everything rises and falls on leadership." I couldn't agree more. However, I don't think this has anything to do with positional leadership, but more about leadership principles. There are a number of people I consider leaders, from students to global dignitaries and everyone in between. I have learned and continue to learn what leadership is by observing others and reflecting on my own behaviors as a leader. Following are my most important principles that define leadership and how each principle is present or in the works at Gahanna Lincoln High School:
- vision
- relationships
- clear expectations
- communication
- team work and service
- accountability

| boston arts academy hosts arts in education summer institute | | Imagine, Innovate, Advocate June 26-28 2013
"Imagine, Innovate, Advocate" is the ninth annual Summer Institute for Arts in Education hosted by the Center for Arts in Education at Boston Arts Academy. Summer Institute allows educators the time, space, and support to imagine new possibilities for their classrooms, schools, and communities. Using a dynamic, process-based approach to school transformation, participants will explore areas including leadership development, school culture, family and community partnerships, literacy, inclusion and differentiation for English Language Learners and Special Education students, building professional learning communities, and strategic planning, fundraising and advocacy. The program for the week will include speakers, presentations, and workshops focused on interdisciplinary, project-based learning methods, with particular emphasis on the role of the arts in creating school change. Participants will have the opportunity to choose one immersive experience during the afternoons: STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math), PEP (Peers Educating Peers), or Literacy/Inclusion.

president's message
|

Dear Friends in the Arts,
As we usher in the beginning of a new year filled with optimism, I echo these sentiments and wish our Arts Schools Network membership and sponsors endless blessings in 2013. During this season of "new beginnings," we welcome four new members to ASN's Board of Directors. ASN's mission-driven Board of Directors is filled with individuals committed to enhancing networking opportunities for leaders in the arts. With that said, join me in welcoming to the board: Diane Makas, Artistic Director, Academy for the Performing Arts, CA; Paul Shapiro, Arts Director, Seattle Academy of Arts and Sciences, WA; Halley Shefler, Founder and CEO, Arts Bridge, LLC, MA; and, Kyle Wedberg, President and CEO, New Orleans Creative Center for the Arts, LA.
This month, our board will convene in Houston, Texas. Our summit will be hosted by Dr. Scott Allen and the dynamic team at Houston High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. Our time is committed to strategic planning for ASN through analyzing the congruency of our mission, vision, and established goals with that of our current practices and initiatives.
As a benefit to our membership, we have two upcoming Webinar series. One is dedicated to Arts Teachers' Evaluations and the other to Animating the Common Core. You will want to take the opportunity to engage in these meaningful opportunities. These are only two examples of the occasions our members have to network. Look for more information related to these Webinars and networking opportunities to come through our e-news by ASN's Executive Director, Kristy Callaway.
On behalf of the entire ASN Board, we look forward to working with you in 2013.
Onward and upward, Craig S. Collins, Ed.D Arts Schools Network, President Principal, Harrison School for the Arts

Is This Teacher on Your Campus?
We all have one...sometimes more than one. You know "That" teacher! The teacher who kids can't wait to get to his or her class. The teacher who always has kids engaged and in the palm of his or her hand with whatever art concept is being taught and any given day.
Yeah, you know the one.
ASN wants to hear from "That" teacher!
Best practice is defined as a teaching or instructional method that has been demonstrated by research to be an effective learning tool. By following educational research, teachers may offer students better learning programs that can improve academic achievement. So grab that teacher on your campus who makes a difference in the lives of kids everyday through quality instruction in the arts. Ask him or her to think about best practices in their classroom! My hope is that you will ask your teacher to download the form found at the link below and submit it to the ASN Best Practices Committee at the address listed on the form.
R. Scott Allen, ASN Best Practices Chair

| using film to teach common core skills | | education week online december 12 2012 teacher leaders network by jessica keigan
Engaging students is one of our main challenges as teachers. This challenge has been compounded by the added rigor of the common standards. Now, more than ever, students need us to offer differentiation and accessible texts to practice the skills we will assess. Using film creates a level playing field for all students and, hopefully, a much better set of experiences to remember long after they leave Ms. Keigan's high school language arts class.
