Exemplary School designation is issued to individual schools in recognition of excellence in their efforts to evaluate strategically their purpose, operations, and educational programs. The design of the evaluation for Exemplary School designation is based on the short version of the Guide to Assessing Your School, a document jointly created by the Arts Schools Network and the Accrediting Commission for Community and Pre-collegiate Arts Schools (ACCPAS) as a way to assist arts school personnel with important responsibilities for planning, evaluating, and implementing effective organizational development. The Guide is an assessment tool that uses questions based on ACCPAS accreditation standards.
When a school is designated as an Exemplary School, it is not only recognized for improvement efforts, but it also gains positive exposure that helps in fundraising, advocacy, and networking. The selection process builds on the ASN partnership with ACCPAS.

The 2012 Dance Teacher Awards: Kim Stroud, Helping K-12 students feel empowered through dance
By jdalzell
"The most exciting thing is the moment when students realize that they're the masters of this instrument," says Kim Stroud, arts director of the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts in Hartford, Connecticut, a magnet school for grades 9-12. "Not that they necessarily have mastery of their bodies-but they can be the masters. I love it." A former Martha Graham Dance Company member for 11 years, Stroud teaches a Graham-based modern class at the school in addition to overseeing the faculty and curriculum planning.
Since joining the faculty in 1993, Stroud has helped the program grow from 200 to 700 students. (A middle-school program is also slated to open this fall.) She also leads community classes for at-risk youth in Hartford and directs the dance program at the Center for Creative Youth at Wesleyan University, a summer program for high-schoolers. In 2002, she pioneered a summer arts residency in Cape Verde, Africa, active for four summers.
"I took five teachers and 10 students the first year," says Stroud. "But I told my teachers, 'We're not going to be the Americans who tell you how it's done. We're going to collaboratively teach each other,'" she says. Stroud paired each American teacher with an African teacher, and together they taught their cultures' different approaches to dance, music, art and theater. The dance program highlighted improvisation and composition. "We'd show what our aesthetic looks like when we create dances, then they showed us theirs," she says. "Then we'd collaborate. The students had to take each other's movement and make it work together."
Stroud says that living in Africa was a shock to her students. "Electricity was iffy," she says. "We sat without air-conditioning in August and washed our clothes in the sink. But it was the most amazing experience." By the final summer in 2008, the program had grown to include 30 American and 50 African students. But little did Stroud know the program she built would help unite communities on Cape Verde's 10 islands. "When we auditioned for the program, we took the most talented kids, from both the lower and upper classes," she says. "Later we were told that it was the first time that these people worked together and families allowed it to happen."
Regardless of her teaching environment, Stroud's mission remains the same: Help students feel empowered through dance. "Some students make decisions because they don't think that they have options, or power over anything," she says. "But it's as simple as learning that your right leg is totally in your control, that you have power over something. And that's what dance did for me. I'm the first person in my family to go to college. I'm the first to travel outside the United States -- because of dance." Visit Greater Harford Academy of the Arts |

| chicago public school arts education plan | |
VISION OF THE CPS ARTS EDUCATION PLAN
The guiding principle of the CPS Arts Education Plan is that every CPS student will receive ongoing high quality arts education both in and out of the classroom. Through a comprehensive and sequential study of visual art, music, dance, and theater from K-12th grade, all Chicago Public Schools students will have the opportunity to develop into innovative thinkers and creative problem solvers who are capable of expressing themselves, understanding others and contributing to their city's culture and economy for years to come. The CPS Arts Education Plan honors and promotes the critical role of certified arts instructors as anchors for building robust arts programs and creating strong arts partnerships in schools. Five Guiding Principles
- Provide equity and access to arts learning for not just some, but all children
- Return the arts to the ongoing education and school day experience
- Provide quality sequential arts instruction
- Prepare young people for life and work in the 21st Century
- Support increasing high school graduation rates

| chicago guide for teaching and learning in the arts | | The Chicago Guide for Teaching and Learning in the Arts is a plan as well as a map. Like any good guide, it leads the user to places and potential experiences meant to illuminate and inspire. Our itinerary takes us to arts resources in Chicago and our vehicle is the Chicago Public Schools (CPS)-the first public institution encountered by the vast majority of children in the city. The destination is clear. We want to direct our children to arts experiences that enhance their natural abilities to express themselves creatively. Now, how does the Guide accomplish its goals?
The Guide has been developed by the Office of Arts Education, the first K-12 arts education curriculum office in the Chicago Public Schools that encompasses four arts disciplines: music, visual arts, theater, and dance. The current debate in public education that focuses on reforming national standards, particularly in reading and math, has influenced our approach. We hold that individual schools and the school system should be as accountable for student learning in the arts as they are for learning in other curriculum areas.
Implementing this conviction presents a challenge. How do we construct a new approach to arts education-one that engages all the stakeholders in a common agenda that focuses on large-scale improvement and greater quality arts education opportunities for all students?

The Third Teacher + design consultancy of Cannon Design uses the design process to help learning communities better serve 21st century learners. With an eye on the future of learning, the multidisciplinary team collaborates with communities and global thought leaders to formulate systemic strategies for change.
Background: Developed through the relationships built around The Third Teacher book project, The Third Teacher + is an education design consultancy within Cannon Design that helps learning communities better serve 21st century learners.
Process: After establishing a collective project vision that encompasses pedagogical, technological and social elements, we design innovative learning environments, "the third teacher," in support of that vision.
Global Network: Additionally, the TTT+ team has on-going access to a remarkable network of global thought leaders exploring the relationship between "innovation" and "the future of learning", some of which are project partners and others are members of our TTT+ salon series. Finally, we also are very fortunate to work with over 1,000 of the finest architects and engineers around the world through Cannon Design.
ABOUT The Third Teacher + A RESEARCH PROJECT: The Third Teacher is the result of a learning experience that began when three global design firms joined forces on an unprecedented project: gathering the stories of education thought leaders and learning communities who sought to redesign the future of learning. Cannon Design's expertise in K-12 / higher education architecture, VS America's trailblazing work with ergonomic furniture solutions, and Bruce Mau Design's unrivaled ability to capture and communicate "positive innovation" combined to create this comprehensive and novel cabinet of wonders.

| chicago children's choir | | |
In 1956 during the Civil Rights Movement, the late Christopher Moore founded the multiracial, multicultural Chicago Children's Choir at Hyde Park's First Unitarian Church. He believed that youth from diverse backgrounds could better understand each other-and themselves-by learning to make beautiful music together. Today's Choir is fully independent and serves all of Chicago from its home in the Chicago Cultural Center. Christopher Moore's vision of a choir combining high artistic standards with a social purpose continues to define the Choir's mission.
The Choir currently serves 3,000 children, ages 8-18 through choirs in 51 Chicago Public Schools, after-school programs in eight Chicago neighborhoods and the internationally acclaimed Concert Choir. Under President and Artistic Director Josephine Lee, the Choir has undertaken many highly successful national and international tours, received a Chicago/Midwest Emmy Award for the 2008 documentary Songs on the Road to Freedom, and has been featured in nationally broadcast television and radio performances, most recently on The Oprah Show, NBC's Today and the PBS series From the Top: Live from Carnegie Hall.

| a+ denver finds art deserts in dos | | by Julie Poppen on Sep 6th, 2012 EdNewsColorado.org
In the same way there are food deserts in certain corners of bustling cities, there are also areas devoid of art opportunities for young people.
Planting the seeds of creativity in these art deserts in Denver is what A+ Denver says it aims to do through a task force on quality arts in Denver Public Schools. The nonprofit school reform outfit on Thursday released a draft report on the state of arts education in DPS, believed to be the first of its kind.
"It is meant to be a snapshot of what is currently in DPS in terms of arts education, and a description of why arts education is so important," said Van Schoales, executive director of A+ Denver. "You'll find the recommendations are purposefully blank at this point. We wanted to share the report with A+ members and the public to get ideas, thoughts and feedback." Learn more
Read the draft report, Arts Education in Denver: Envisioning Excellence A+ Denver researchers uncovered pockets of greatness - most notably, Denver School of the Arts - but they also found areas where students have few opportunities to learn traditional fine arts, such as painting, sculpture, architecture and music, or modern fine arts like film, photography, design, literary arts and culinary arts.

| democratic platform includes arts and culture | | the 2012 democratic party platform includes the following statement on arts and culture:
Democrats are proud of our support for arts funding and education. We are committed to continuing the policies and programs that have already done so much for our creative arts industry and economy. Investment in the arts strengthens our communities and contributes to our nation's rich cultural heritage. We will continue to support public funding for the National Endowment for the Arts, for the National Endowment for the Humanities, and for programs providing art and music education in primary and secondary schools. The entire nation prospers when we protect and promote the unique and original artistic and cultural contributions of the women and men who create and preserve our nation's heritage.
Similar to what was included in the 2008 party platform, this passage was ratified as part of the full party platform at the convention last night. As in 2008, Americans for the Arts Action Fund requested statements on arts and arts education be included in the party platform. A similar request was made for the GOP party platform as well.

| millennium park: creating a chicago landmark | |
Millennium Park: Creating a Chicago Landmark (Historical Studies of Urban America)
Author: Timothy J. Gilfoyle
Publication Date: June 15, 2006
Series: Historical Studies of Urban America
At its opening on July 16, 2004, Chicago's Millennium Park was hailed as one of the most important millennium projects in the world. "Politicians come and go; business leaders come and go," proclaimed mayor Richard M. Daley, "but artists really define a city." Part park, part outdoor art museum, part cultural center, and part performance space, Millennium Park is now an unprecedented combination of distinctive architecture, monumental sculpture, and innovative landscaping. Including structures and works by Frank Gehry, Anish Kapoor, Jaume Plensa, and Kathryn Gustafson, the park represents the collaborative efforts of hundreds to turn an unused railroad yard in the heart of the city into a world-class civic space and, in the process, create an entirely new kind of cultural philanthropy. Timothy Gilfoyle offers the story of this phenomenal undertaking, beginning before 1850, when the site of the park, the "city's front yard," was part of Lake Michigan. Gilfoyle studied the history of downtown; spent years with the planners, artists, and public officials behind Millennium Park; documented it at every stage of its construction; and traced the skeins of financing through municipal government, global corporations, private foundations, and wealthy civic leaders. The result is a thoroughly readable and lavishly illustrated testament to the park, the city, and all those attempting to think and act on a monumental scale. Underlying Gilfoyle's history is also a revealing study of the globalization of art, the use of culture as an engine of economic expansion, and the nature of political and philanthropic power. Born out of civic idealism, raised in political controversy, and maturing into a symbol of the new Chicago, Millennium Park is truly a twenty-first-century landmark, and it now has the history it deserves. |
