| the dream@50 | |  THE DREAM@50 is a tribute series in 2012/13 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech. Including a student art contest (K-12), a world music/dance festival, and video PSAs, THE DREAM@50 is a celebration of creative collaboration in both the Civil Rights Movement and the arts as the foundation for a new paradigm in how we can live together. THE DREAM@50 is produced by Karz Productions in partnership with the King Center, National Education Association, National Art Education Association, Americans for the Arts, National Council of Teachers of English, National Council for the Social Studies, Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, United Nations Academic Impact, and YouTube. Greetings members and friends!
A few weeks ago, through the generosity of our title sponsor Columbia College Chicago, our membership gathered in the windy city from all over the USA and beyond. We are especially grateful to the local logistical leadership provided by David Flatley, Ania Greiner, and Murphy Monroe.
Our theme was "Urban Arts Education Landscapes" with a particular focus on the new demands of arts school leadership in a rapidly changing educational context. Many participants expressed a strong desire to keep the conversation and learning going, so we made all presenter materials available online to attendees only.
This e-news continues the conference celebration of our award winners, exemplary schools, and pays homage to our past presidents and the history of Arts Schools Network. All of which illustrates our collective energy.
Our next big programmatic event underway is our high school student talent recognition program called, On Your Way. Students apply and audition (by November 15!) with online portfolios and uploaded media files of their work, which will be reviewed by judges, renowned individuals from prestigious colleges and conservatories.
Students not only have a chance to win scholarships, but they'll also get valuable exposure, feedback, and advice - and get a jump on creating online portfolios for college applications or auditions.
On Your Way winners automatically bypass the preliminary round in the national YoungArts* program and can access the YoungArts online portal for portfolio submission. *YoungArts is the exclusive nominating agency for the U.S. Presidential Scholars in the Arts, the country's highest honor for high school seniors. Applicants must be between the ages of 15-18 or in high school grades 10-12.
If you know of a talented high school student in the areas of classical voice, filmmaking, musical theatre, or visual arts, please help them on their way.

Several serious research studies have shown the positive impact the arts have on academic success. Creativity, imagination, and innovation are highly desired skills in many professional and technical career fields.
The Green Bay East High School Institute for the Fine Arts will be launched in the 2011-2012 school year. A three-year, progressive roll-out of this program will engage students in various areas of the fine arts; in 2011-2012, the first stage focuses on piano, strings, and choral music, with an emphasis on classical music.
Fine Arts Institute students will study under master teachers and artists, receive private instruction, develop an artistic portfolio, and earn academic credit for their private and independent study in the arts.

The Arts Department of New Rochelle High School is an expansive program that integrates not only Art, Music, Dance and Theater Arts, but also provides an impressive Performing and Visual Arts Education Program (PAVE), which enables students to major in the Arts.
As the largest department of its kind in Westchester County, the NRHS Arts Department encourages students to appreciate this multicultural environment and to bring their own unique cultural perspective to their work. In addition, the department emphasizes differentiated instruction, in order to address the diverse learning needs of all students without compromising the essential knowledge and skills students are expected to learn.
We are a forward looking department: Our new Arts wing houses not only a dance studio, music rooms, art and sculpture classrooms, but also includes a computer graphics lab. We take pride in the fact that many of our talented teachers are exhibiting artists and practicing performers, who are devoted, life-long learners. They encourage our students to exhibit work in our Museum of Arts and Culture, as well as to participate in public shows and to perform regularly in our theater productions.

Tim Nelson is in his 15th year as a teacher, director and music director at California's Huntington Beach Academy for the Performing Arts. A leading figure in Orange County Theatre, Nelson has lead the Academy's internationally recognized Musical Theatre Department since 1997. Several of his students have been nominated for the National High School Musical Theater Award and his theatrical productions have won numerous awards. Nelson's dedication to the stage is matched by his dedication to the classroom, teaching a variety of musical theatre and performance based classes.

| los ángeles school board votes to designate the arts as a core subject | | |
The unanimously approved resolution instructed the superintendent to develop a plan to integrate the arts across the curriculum as the 664,000-student system moves to implement the Common Core State Standards. School board member Nury Martinez authored the resolution, and was joined in support by actors Cheech Marin-of the Grammy Award winning comedy duo Cheech & Chong and former LA public school district student-and Everybody Loves Raymond actress Monica Rosenthal. The decision was made just a day after the Los Angeles Fund for Public Education announced a $4 million campaign, called Arts Matter, to raise public awareness about the importance of arts education for the city's schools, and to support the development of arts integration curricula.

| chicago releases arts education plan | |
 Public meetings were held earlier this year to receive suggestions from residents about the proposed plan and at nearly every meeting residents called for strengthening K-12 arts education. The CPS Arts Education Plan combines the public input with research and best practices from other cities. The document calls for 120 minutes of arts instruction per week in elementary schools and expanded arts requirements for high school students, as well as additional arts teachers.

| rethinking principal evaluation | |
 by gail connelly and joann bartoletti education week oct 31 2012 In an era of high-stakes testing, more-rigorous federal and state accountability programs, and intense interest among taxpayers and government leaders in school-level performance, the demand for accountability for principals has never been greater. However, narrowing a principal's performance evaluation to student test scores-or any single criterion, especially those for which a principal does not have direct control-is absurd. Yet that very scenario has been repeated time and again during the past 10 years of adequate yearly progress under the No Child Left Behind law, the current version of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. As principal evaluation is likely to be in cluded in proposals to reauthorize the ESEA, the federal government should encourage states to develop effective principal-evaluation systems based on multiple and meaningful measures of the competencies needed to improve student learning. Those systems should include professional-development plans that acknowledge the unique characteristics of each school and its community.

| perpich center releases findings from state-wide arts education survey | | Arts Education in Minnesota Survey: Building a Legacy
 In the early 2000s, there was considerable discussion about the role of the arts in public education, but little data about the status of arts education in all schools in Minnesota. To answer this need, the Perpich Center for Arts Education launched The Minnesota Arts Education Research Project during the 2010/2011 school year with funding provided by the Minnesota State Legislature through its Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund of the Clean Water, Land, and Legacy Amendment. The purpose of this project was to gather, evaluate and disseminate quantitative data regarding arts education in the state. The Research Project was designed to document arts education in every school through a statewide voluntary survey, and combine the survey findings with other information to create a 360-degree view of arts education in the state. This report is a summary of the status of arts education, education policy and delivery. The intent is to provide decision makers and the public with a clear picture of the status of arts education in Minnesota.

Wynton Marsalis made a special, surprise trip to his alma mater, New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, on Monday-October 22, providing a masterclass to music students. The world renowned trumpeter, composer and music educator provide special insight to NOCCA students on the importance of practice and technique. As a highlight, Wynton listened to students in the jazz and classical instrumental divisions, providing advice and feedback on their performance. young arts offers master class dvd and companion guide | | As the latest initiative of National YoungArts Foundation's (YoungArts) ongoing work to help increase arts education and awareness, YoungArts has begun distributing copies of Pursuing Your Passion: Lessons from YoungArts MasterClass, a study guide booklet and 2-DVD set, free of charge to middle and high schools nationwide.
 Developed in conjunction with Columbia University's Teachers College, the study guide and DVD set is based on the award winning HBO YoungArts MasterClass series in which masters teach and mentor young artists. This educational tool, as well as sample lesson plans, recommended classroom activities, and full episodes of YoungArts
MasterClass are also available free of charge to schools and teachers nationwide as a download from the Teachers College's EdLab website at youngartsmasterclass.org.
