The Town of Carefree has joined forces with Maricopa County and other jurisdictions around the Valley to review and update the existing multi-hazard mitigation plans and consolidate them into one multi-jurisdictional, multi-hazard mitigation plan. A final draft of the 2015 Maricopa County Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan (PLAN) is now available for review and comment.
The goal of this mitigation planning effort is to reduce or eliminate long-term risk to life and property from natural hazard events. Mitigation is not how we respond to emergencies like floods and wildfires, but rather how we as a community might lessen or even prevent the impact of such things in the first place.
Residents are highly encouraged to review the updated PLAN and offer comments. For more information, please visit the multi-jurisdictional planning website.

History Highlights
| |
From the Cave Creek Museum
Kraig Nelson, docent
One of the entrepreneurial foundersof the towns of Phoenix and Cave Creek, William B. Hellings, had an important impact upon the new Arizona territory (1863). Mr. Hellings owned and farmed two sections of land near the Salt River. He eventually built an extremely prosperous flour mill; this area, just a few miles from the original Phoenix townsite, became known as Mill City, and later was known as East Phoenix. In 1873, Mr. Hellings hired fifty men to build Cave Creek Road and started purchasing mines in the Cave Creek area. One mine was called Continental Mine, and is the namesake of Continental Mountain.
