Writing the Contemporary Novel: a Workshop

Tuesday, August 18

10 - 11:30 a.m.

Betty Webb, acclaimed author of 13 mystery and suspense novels, will focus on gaining writing skills, and structural plot strength. Learn the red flags guaranteed to get your manuscript rejected, the art of self-editing, and tricks to avoid writer's block. This hands-on writing workshop delves into story structure, tone, theme, arc of action, setting, character development, self-editing, and research. Beginning novelists are faced with the following dilemmas: "Should I outline or not?" Which is more important - character or plot?" "Why did my last rejection slip say my 'arc of action' was weak?" Why did the agent tell me my book was unmarketable?" "What does it mean when an agents asks, 'What is your platform?'" Step by step, Betty's workshop shows you how to get started, how to structure your story, what traps to avoid, and how to stay in the creative zone until your novel is ready to submit to an agent or publisher. Handouts include a copy of the query letter that gained Betty her own agent, and the actual synopsis of one of her published books. Register: 480-488-2286.

Presenter Ben Ta'ati, CCH, RSHom, Board Certified in Classical Homeopathy, has practiced homeopathic medicine for 20 years, teaching extensively and having served as Department Chair and Director at the American Medical College of Homeopathy. Carefree News

The Town of Carefree has joined forces with Maricopa County and other jurisdictions around the Valley to review and update the existing multi-hazard mitigation plans and consolidate them into one multi-jurisdictional, multi-hazard mitigation plan.  A final draft of the 2015 Maricopa County Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan (PLAN) is now available for review and comment.

The goal of this mitigation planning effort is to reduce or eliminate long-term risk to life and property from natural hazard events.  Mitigation is not how we respond to emergencies like floods and wildfires, but rather how we as a community might lessen or even prevent the impact of such things in the first place.

Residents are highly encouraged to review the updated PLAN and offer comments.  For more information, please visit the multi-jurisdictional planning website.

History Highlights

From the Cave Creek Museum

Kraig Nelson, docent

Did you know there were two important Cave Creek pioneers with the name Andrew Jackson?  Andrew Jackson (Jedder) Hoskin, and his family, lived on the east side of the Cave Creek stream, and Andrew Jackson (A.J.) Linville, and his family, lived along the west side of the Cave Creek stream, not far from Jedder. Jedder's land encompassed the original "Cave Creek Station" which eventually became the town-center, not far from today's Rancho Manana Golf Resort.  A.J. was a rancher who rebuilt an ancient, two-and-a-half-mile, Hohokam canal-system to facilitate irrigation on his land. It became known as the "Linville Canal."  Both families made an important and lasting impact upon the small community.
