A Message from Mr. Loe...

Viking Families,

I hope your summer is off to a great start.  Please take time to recharge by relaxing and enjoying family and friends.

This first year flew by quickly.  I cannot thank the students, staff, and families enough for all their support during my first year as principal at SM West.

We had several staff retirements and resignations at the end of the 2014-2015 school year.  We will certainly miss these staff members and thank them for all they have done for our students and community.  At this time, we have filled all but one open position and are very excited about the hires we have made.

As most of you know, we completed our first year in implementing our Digital Learning Initiative.  We tackled more than a few challenges and learned a great deal from those challenges.  The 1:1 MacBook initiative gave our staff and students so many opportunities to enhance our already strong curriculum.  The feedback we received has been overwhelmingly positive.  We will continue to learn how to best utilize the MacBooks to give students and staff unique ways to improve learning.  Also, we will continue to hone our skills and knowledge regarding our new Skyward student record system.  It is our goal to make Skyward an essential tool in communicating with families regarding student grades and attendance.

Important Changes for Next Year

  • New Campus Security Station and Secured Exterior Doors

This summer the West front entrance will be under construction.  We will be adding a Campus Security Station, where our Campus Security Officer will "buzz in" visitors after the building is secured.  Once the 7:40 am tardy bell rings, all exterior entrances will be locked and alarmed.  From 7:40 am to 2:40 pm, students, parents, and visitors will have to enter West through the main entrance only.  Each person will have to be identified before he or she may enter.  Students will have to use their student ID's and visitors will be asked to show their driver's license.  We appreciate everyone's patience and understanding with our new safety and security updates.  With these safety and security updates, students must understand the importance of arriving prior to 7:40 am.  If students are late, they must use the front entrance only and can risk being even later to first or second block due to the time it takes to walk to the front entrance and be checked in.   It will be imperative that students have their ID cards with them at all times.

  • Study Halls Will No Longer Be Offered

For the 2015-2016 school year we will not offer any study halls.  Students must commit to the classes they have chosen and work with the teacher to be successful.

We understand that it will take time to adjust to the above changes.  We appreciate everyone's patience and cooperation in making the transition to these new policies a smooth one.

Speaking of smooth transitions-welcome, freshman class of 2019!  To help our freshmen make this transition to high school a positive one, our freshman mentor program, FMP, offers a group of upper class mentors to work with 9th grade students throughout the year.  FMP's will provide each freshman with a supportive environment that fosters the move from middle school to high school, both academically and socially.  Don't forget the first day of school for 9th grade students is Wednesday, August 12th.  All other students will start school on Thursday, August 13th.

Again take time to relax and enjoy summer.  We will see you soon.  "WEST IS BEST!"

Sincerely,

Steve Loe

Principal

West is Best!

Honor Roll

Congratulations to all the Vikings who made the Principal's Honor Roll and the Honor Roll for the 2015 spring semester.  We especially want to highlight the students who earned all A's for the semester.  With the new Skyward program, the honor roll designation is now included on the transcript as well.  Please continue to encourage your son or daughter to pursue academic excellence!

From the High School Program Planning Guide:  Shawnee Mission recognizes academic excellence by placing students on one of two honors rolls:  a 3.0 Honor Roll or a Principal's Honor Roll.

To be named to the 3.0 Honor Roll, a student must have a GPA of 3.0 for a minimum of 2.5 credits per semester.  The grades of A, B, C, D and F will be used to calculate the GPA.  Grades of Q, P, E, K, NG, WP or WF are not used in the GPA computation formula.  A grade of N, D, F or I will eliminate the student from being named to the Honor Roll.

To be named to the Principal's Honor Roll, a student must have a GPA of 4.0 or above and be enrolled in a minimum of 2.5 credits per semester.  The grades of A, B, C, D and F will be used to calculate the GPA.  Grades of Q, P, E, K, NG, WP or WF are not used in the GPA computation formula.  A grade of N, C, D, F, or I will eliminate the student from being named to the Principal's Honor Roll.  Students who earn all A's will have special designation.

We encourage students to take what they want, but eat what they take in order to reduce waste.

All menus are analyzed for nutritional content and meet the USDA guidelines for the age of the student. Please contact the school nurse or the food services office for information regarding special diets.

Payments
A student may receive one breakfast and one lunch per day at the student meal price. Second student meals are not allowed. Individual items may be purchased at the a la carte price.

Students can use their food service account or cash to purchase any items in the cafeteria. A print out of your child's account is available upon request or on the district web page. This printout will indicate if your child selected a meal or if they have selected a la carte items. The a la carte items will be listed by price. All students receive reminder phone calls when their accounts are running low or are negative. There are no charges allowed at the high schools. If a student does not have lunch money, the student is provided a toasted cheese sandwich and milk at no charge.

A la Carte items are available for purchase. There are guidelines titled 'Smart Snacks in Schools' that took effect July 1, 2014. The law has specific nutrition standards for all foods and beverages sold to students outside the school meal programs; on the school campus; and at any time during the school day. All food and beverage items must be in compliance. As we receive guidance from USDA and KSDE, we will communicate with all stakeholders and have the information available on the food service webpage.

Breakfast menus, lunch menus, free/reduced meal applications and other nutrition information are available on the district's website at http://foodservices.smsd.org. For questions, please contact Food Services at (913)993-9710.

News for Seniors - Class of 2016

ATTENTION SENIORS

Graduation Cap

The 2016 Shawnee Mission West graduation is May 19, 2016, 7:00 pm at the Shawnee Mission South District Stadium.

Seniors and their parents should watch the SM West announcements and the West webpage for information regarding the ordering of graduation announcements, caps and gowns and other important information for graduation.  All information will be updated as it becomes available.

SENIORS - Begin NOW to Plan for College

Seniors should be taking the ACT and/or the SAT for college entrance if they have not already done so.  The ACT is offered on September 12th, but the registration deadline is Friday, August 7th.  Students will need to register for this test in the summer time if they want to take this ACT.  The next ACT will be October 24th.  Other test dates and registration information can be found at the testing websites.  Students on the free or reduced lunch program can see their counselor about obtaining a fee waiver.

ACT registration:                www.actstudent.org

SAT registration:                www.collegeboard.com

Senior year whizzes by quickly!  Summer is an excellent opportunity for incoming seniors to begin their college search.  In fact, by the end of summer, seniors should have most of their college search completed. Use the summer to explore websites, visit campuses, and prepare for upcoming exams.

Many colleges have early deadlines for scholarships and admission.  For example, both KU and KSU have a November 1st deadline to apply for scholarships.  So, students would want to complete their ACT and/or SAT testing by that date.

College Search

College Planning
By the end of summer you should have completed your list of colleges where you would like to apply. Your college research should include a profile of college costs, admission requirements, and study programs.

  1. Search colleges using the internet.  Examples include:

http://student.collegeboard.org/?student

www.anycollege.com

www.petersons.com

  1. Take a virtual tour with online videos of college and universities

 www.campustours.com

3.  Narrow your list of possible colleges to three categories:

  • 2-3 schools that you could definitely get in
  • 2-3 schools that you could probably get in
  • 3-5 schools that you would like to get it

  1. Visit prospective colleges.  It is important that you visit schools you might want to attend.  Schedule your visit at least two weeks in advance.  Call the admissions office to arrange the visit and ask if you can sit in on classes, visit the dorm, talk with a professor, and take a campus tour.  Speak to faculty and students and ask LOTS of questions.  Ask students what they like the best and least about their school.  TAKE notes!!

  1. Review applications and brochures from your top colleges.

Create files with each college you are applying to and track your progress.

  1. Create a resume of things that you have been involved in both in and out of school.  This is your opportunity to show colleges what sets you apart from other applicants.  There are four things important to schools in admitting students: academic record (which includes your transcript and your test scores), extra-curricular involvement, essays (if required) and recommendations (If required).  Schools like to see leadership positions and community involvement.  They look for scope and depth; you have started something and committed to it rather than a listing of many different clubs or organizations.

  1. College bound student athletes:  Students interested in continuing their athletic career at the next level will need to prove academic eligibility. Colleges fall under various categories (NCAA, NAIA, D3, NJCAA) each having its own standards and procedures for demonstrating academic eligibility.  For NCAA D1 or D2, students must register through the NCAA Eligibility center at www.eligibilitycenter.org. NAIA schools, www.playnaia.org.
  2.
  3. MyMajors.com has a quiz that will recommend a list of college majors. They have over 1,800 majors, 7,500 colleges and 42,000 careers to research. Students can find colleges and universities by the majors offered as well as location, school size and other criteria they find important in making a college choice.  Go to www.mymajors.com to start the quiz.

Schedules

Students will have access to their class schedules in late July during fee payment.  Counselors are continuing to work on schedules and balance classes until fee payment time.  Many classes are full; so, there will be little room for students to change their mind about their original requests.  Plus, there will be no study halls in the 2015-2016 year.  Students must commit to the classes they have chosen and work with the teacher to be successful.

However, counselors will work with students to make schedule adjustments for the following reasons:

1)    Failed a prerequisite course.

2)    Seniors who need to meet a graduation requirement.

3)    Completing a course in summer school.

4)    Health of a student (doctor's note required).

Also, we will continue the West tradition of pushing students to challenge themselves academically.  If a student signed up for an Honors or AP class, the principal would like the students to give themselves the opportunity to succeed at the more challenging level.  Therefore, no student will be allowed to drop an Honors or AP class without consulting with the principal first.

Summer Assignments

These classes have summer "jump start" assignments that need to be completed prior to school starting in August.  These assignments can be found on the Counseling web backpack.

Biology 1 Honors

English 9 Honors

English 10 Honors

English 11 AP - English Language

English 12 AP - English Literature

AP American Government

AP US History (Book/assignment should have been obtained before the end of the school year.  If the student did not pick up the book and assignment, additional copies are in the Counseling Office.)

New Student Orientation

Students new to Shawnee Mission West who are in grades 10-12 are invited to a new student orientation on Wednesday, August 12, 2015, from 8 - 10:00 am.  This is the first day of school for freshmen only but new students in grades 10-12 will have their own separate orientation in the morning on that day.  Students should RSVP to the Counseling Office at 993-7830 by Friday, August 8th.

Presidential Service Award

Presidential Service Award SMW students may apply for this award by tracking their service hours on the sheet available from the Counseling Office.  The hours must be completed over a twelve month period beginning 4/1/15 and ending 3/31/16.  The students self report the service hours and at the completion of the tracking period return the completed service hour form to the Counseling Office to be submitted for the award.

At the predetermined deadline, the student needs to turn in the tracking log to the Counseling Office.  The committee chair (Ms. Kieffer) then compiles the information necessary for submission of the students for the award.  The awards are applied for online on the Presidential Service Award website by the Counseling Office. The awards will be delivered to SMW and the Counseling Office and SMW Administration will determine how and when recognition will be scheduled.

Click here to download the recording form fo the award.

Reclassification of Students

Students must successfully complete a minimum number of credits to advance to the next grade level.  At the end of summer school, the counselors will notify students who will be reclassified to the previous grade level.  To advance to the next grade level, students must earn:

5.5 credits to move on to Grade 10

11.0 credits to move on to Grade 11

16.0 credits to move on to Grade 12

Athletic Department News

From the Athletic Director

The first day of the fall sports season for the 2015-16 school year is not until August 17th, but now is an important time to start preparing for the first day of practice to ensure a successful beginning to a great experience.  First, there is specific paperwork that needs to be on file in the athletic office before your son or daughter is able to begin practice.  The KSHSAA physical form must be completely filled out and signed by the appropriate medical personnel (MD, DO, DC, PA-C, APRN), the parents, and the athlete.  The state concussion form must also be on file and signed by the athlete and parent before the athlete can practice.  The district activity packet must be completed and signed in multiple places by the parent and athlete, and must be on file before the first game or competition.   We encourage it to also be turned in by Friday before the first day of practice.   All of these forms can be picked up in the athletic office or can be found online at our school website.   When you get these forms completed, I want to encourage you to bring them to the athletic office.  We will be accepting them throughout the summer.

I hope your son or daughter is taking advantage of our coach's camps and workout hours this summer.  Studies have shown that proper conditioning and strength training can help reduce the risk of injury to athletes during practices and games.   To get in touch with a coach of a certain sport, please contact my office, 913-993-7843 or email me at donperkins@smsd.org.  The weight room is open from 6:30 - 11:00 am throughout the summer and coaches have scheduled their camps at various times throughout the summer.  Our camp brochure can also be viewed on our school website under summer activities.

Another way to get information and updates on Viking games is to follow West on Twitter or through text alerts.  You can follow us at smwsports on Twitter, or if you don't use Twitter, you can get text alerts by texting the message follow@smwsports and then send it to 40404.

The summer is a great time to relax and enjoy family time together, but it is also a time to prepare for another school year and activities that you and your family will want to take advantage of during the 2015-16 school year.  I hope this information is beneficial and if you still have questions feel free to contact me.

GO VIKINGS!!

FCCLA Students Attend State Leadership Conference, Were Installed into Office, Earn Awards & Make it to Nationals!

The Shawnee Mission West chapter of the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) recently attended the 2015 FCCLA State Leadership Conference in Wichita on April 13 & 14.  The conference offered members the opportunity to gain recognition, become inspired by motivational speakers and network with other members across the state.

STAR Events (Students Taking Action with Recognition) are competitive events in which member plan, carryout, and evaluate the results of their project.  Participants could obtain the rating of Gold, Silver, or Bronze.  These students had to earn the top award at the district competition in order to compete at the state level.

SMW students, Pooja Poladia and Yesica Orozco, earned a Gold award in the Focus on Children STAR Event and will be representing the state of KS at the National Leadership Conference in Washington DC this summer.  Pooja stated, "Doing a STAR Event was a great experience for me.  We are really proud of our efforts and the outcome of making it to Nationals. There couldn't be a better way than this to spend our senior year!"  SMN students, Mitchell Stuart, Ali Webster and Jonathan (Grey) Shelton, earned a Silver award in the Culinary Arts Event STAR Event and were awarded scholarships to CIT and Johnson and Wales.  SMW students, Monique Morales and Mina Morales, were installed as District Officers.  Mina said, "Being elected as a district officer for District E-East FCCLA was a leadership role that I wanted to fill because I wanted to be able to get more involved with my community in a bigger way than just with my local FCCLA chapter.  I will be this years E-East district secretary, I am excited to see how I can grow with my fellow district officers of E-East and what we can bring to the table for our FCCLA chapters!"  SMW students, Stephanie LaVeccina, Hayley Barton and Paulina Salas, also participated in the SLC.

SMW students were also successful at the District EE FCCLA competition.  Gabriela Venzor and Viridiana Nunez  earned a silver in the Life Event Planning STAR event and Sierra Macklin judged a STAR events.

The SMW local FCCLA chapter served their community in many ways this year.  Members planned, prepared and hosted our annual Safe Trick-or-Treat Event, collected food for Harvesters, worked at the Johnson County Christmas Bureau, baked cookies to donate, make valentine treats and collected boxed valentines for children at the Safe Home, volunteered at TurnStyles and created blankets for the ShareHugs organization.  SMW Members experienced leadership events at the Fall Leadership Conference and FCCLA District Meeting.

The mission of FCCLA is to promote personal growth and leadership development through Family and Consumer Sciences Education.  Focusing on the multiple roles of family member, wage earner and community leader, members develop skills for life through character development, creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communication, practical knowledge and career preparation.

We can't believe the school year has come to an end.  What a great one it was for our choir and drama departments that are supported by the "Spotlighters Group".  Shawnee Mission West with 6 nominations and 2 winners for the Blue Star Awards for "A Year with Frog and Toad".  We also enjoyed "Mid-Summer Jersey" and "Get Smart" not to mention the rep plays and all the choir concerts...and how about ending the year with Spotlight Spectacular. ...and spectacular it was!  Every year it gets better and better.

We became members of Spotlighters when our son was a freshman at SMW.  We knew several of the senior parents who enlisted us to become "Angels" to the group, only because that particular membership allowed early entry into "Spotlight Spectacular" at the end of the school year.  We had no idea what that was all about (like so many other parents who have students in the choir or the theatre departments).  We also felt that since our child wanted to be a part of these groups, we wanted to be informed of his activities, what all this "drama lingo" meant, why we were purchasing tuxedo's and shoe's for "Madrigals" and baking goodies all the time.  But the best part was meeting the other parents, becoming good friends and enjoying time with everyone.  What a great group of teachers and students, and what talent these kids present.

Spotlighters meet the first Monday of the month at 6:00pm in the choir room.  Meetings last one hour or less.  We get a quick run-down of the upcoming choir events by Coach V and her expectations of her choir classes.  Though we have not formally met our new drama director, it is our hope that he will provide useful information to our group, and ways we can support the students in their productions throughout the year.  I found these meetings extremely helpful because having a boy student, well, you don't always get the necessary information, and the meetings were very helpful in planning upcoming events and making sure we were where we needed to be on time. (Girls might be a little more informative!) The Spotlighters group also needs lots of volunteers.  They are many ways to help...selling tickets to events, working the concession stands, helping folks find their seats at the events, selling flowers as a fund raiser and baking cookies, helping with programs, organizing banquets, distributing posters, picnics and so much more.  Most of the time the volunteers get to select seats to the event before the show begins (a nice perk).  Since we have a larger influx of freshman students this year, we are hoping to be able to "have many hands" to make the load lighter.  Please consider being a part of the group.....more to follow in the near future.  (Lynn Lowry)
