Message from Mr. Loe...

Viking Families,

As most of you know we have had a wonderfully challenging start at SM West.  As our district moves to improve the education for every student, our staff faces new ways to educate our future.  And as I expected, our West community has supported our school as we thrive through these new processes.

SMSD board members, SMSD district and building administrators, SMSD PTA and PTSA members, chambers of commerce, business leaders, and political officials within our communities had the opportunity to listen to Dr. William Daggett speak on Tuesday, September 30.  Dr. Daggett is an internationally-known educational reformer whose International Center for Leadership in Education has researched and developed a system-wide approach to effective instruction-focusing on rigor, relevance, and relationships.  The purpose of Dr. Daggett's visit was to begin the conversation of how we as a district can improve student preparation for both college and career.  Dr. Daggett reminded us that currently we have many college graduates who cannot find jobs while incurring significant debt (college tuition has increased at a staggering rate over the last few decades).  Dr. Daggett discussed ideas to best prepare our students to find employment and become productive, meaningful citizens-especially when we do not know what 70% of the jobs will look like when our current kindergartners graduate from college.

Dr. Daggett described that public education has to establish classrooms that demand strong positive teacher-student relationships, embrace technology trends, focus on the fact that relevance makes rigor possible, and teach students how to apply the knowledge they acquire.  Public education also needs to be a system that promotes life-long learning for our teachers through consistent and meaningful professional development.

Dr. Daggett also conveyed a sobering theory that technology will be able to deliver basic knowledge acquisition better than we can.  But what technology cannot do better than we can is teach students how to work with new information and how to solve unstructured problems, which calls for decision-making skills, innovative and creative thinking, and working with others.  Nor can technology teach our students those important guiding principles and leadership skills, such as responsibility, initiative, perseverance, adaptability, respect, and integrity. Thus, we have to create a hybrid classroom where teachers write lessons that engage students with new technology for knowledge acquisition, but also challenge students to apply that information to real-world predictable and unpredictable situations.

What an exciting time to be in public education!  Our school district has already given us some of the tools we need to be ahead of the learning curve.  And at SM West, the students, the staff, and community are rising to these new challenges and creating a bright future for our students.

Steve Loe

Principal

parent & teacher conferences - october 22 & 24

Parent Teacher Conference

We strongly urge ALL parents to participate in parent teacher conferences regardless of your child's course grade status.  We have two convenient formats available.

The OPEN conference format is held in the main gym, auxiliary gym and bridge.  There is no need for appointments for these conferences.  Plan to spend 7 - 10 minutes per teacher.  If a parent and/or teacher would like to continue the conference past the allotted time, an appointment will be scheduled on Friday allowing for a more private conversation.

If a parent cannot attend the October 22nd or 24th scheduled conference time, they should contact the teacher directly by phone or email to establish an appointment for an alternate time.

Wednesday evening, October 22nd  from 5:00 - 8:00 pm

All teachers will be available for conferences.  Appointments are not required.

Teachers will be located in the main gym, auxiliary gym or bridge.  A map will be provided.

Friday, October 24th  from 7:20 am - 3:00 pm

All teachers will be available for conferences. Appointments may be scheduled but are not required.  Teachers will be located in their classrooms.  A map will be provided.  Teachers will be unavailable from 11:30 am - 1:00 pm.

Important Calendar Change

The Academic Awards Program scheduled for Monday, October 27, has been postponed as we re-evaluate our student recognition programs in the area of academics.

Food Service and Viewing Student Accounts

Parents can access what their student purchased via the SMSD food service web page.

http://foodservices.smsd.org/pages/default.aspx

It is toward the bottom and it is called, "account history."  The parent will need to have their student's name and ID number to access this information.

Food Service....Did you know............

Did you know that National School Lunch Week is October 13-17, 2014?  Celebrate NSLW 2014 with the theme of "Get in the Game with School Lunch."  It's about encouraging kids to find a balance between healthy eating and physical activity.  Engaging in physical activity as a family can be a fun way to get everyone moving.  Kids need 60 minutes of play with moderate to vigorous activity every day-but it doesn't have to occur at once, it all adds up!

Don't forget - if your child receives free or reduced meals, they are eligible for one breakfast and one lunch per day as part of this benefit.  All breakfast and lunch meal choices are available for all students regardless of eligibility status.

The school breakfast menus, lunch menus, and other nutrition information are available on the district's website at http://foodservices.smsd.org.

In District Transfer Procedures

Students may request to transfer to another Shawnee Mission high school.  The application deadline is January 5, 2015, to request a transfer for the 2015-2016 school year.  Requests may not be honored after that date. Transfer request forms may be obtained from any school office in the district.  Students must re-apply when changing levels - elementary to middle school and middle school to high school. Requests for transfers need not be renewed annually once a student is attending a school, but shall be made subject to annual review.

Once a transfer is approved, students may remain at that school for the duration provided they are in good standing.  A transfer may be rescinded at any time if a student fails to meet the requirements.  District guidelines require that students attending on an approved transfer must maintain satisfactory grades (for secondary students a minimum of 2.0 grade point average), maintain a minimum of 95 percent attendance record, and maintain an acceptable discipline record.  The district does not supply transportation for transfer students.

After School Loitering Policy

All students should leave the SM West school campus within 30 minutes after school has been dismissed for the day.  The school does not have the resources to provide adult supervision of students loitering on campus.  Ensuring that every student has the means to depart the campus in a timely manner after school is for the student's own safety and welfare.

Students who are working with a teacher or actively participating in a school-sponsored activity are exempt from this policy.  However, these students should have the means to leave campus as soon as the activity has concluded for the day.

Students who are in violation of the after-school loitering policy may be subject to disciplinary action.

Attendance Procedures

Attendance is extremely important to a student's academic success. Only by attending classes can a student receive the full benefit of instruction. Shawnee Mission West is accountable for enforcing the Compulsory Attendance Laws, conducting weekly reviews of all students attendance, and notifying parents via mail of their student's attendance record after a student has been absent from school at least five (5) times, excused or unexcused, in at least one block. We are dedicated to continue to provide all of our students with a quality education. By doing so, we need your help and support in making sure your student is in attendance.

There are academic and legal consequences for excessive absences that you need to be aware of:

  • Shawnee Mission Board Policy mandates a minimum of eighty-five percent (85%) attendance for eligibility of credit in a course. This policy does not distinguish between excused and unexcused absences. [Credit would thereby be potentially lost after the tenth (10th) absence in a semester.] Also stated in the policy is the loss of academic credit in a class if the student is inexcusably absent more than four (4) times in a quarter. At the end of the semester an appeal process is available for students whose absences are a result of circumstances clearly beyond the control of the student. Documentation (i.e. doctor's notes) will be needed to waive excessive absences.
  • According to Shawnee Mission School Board Policy, a student must be in attendance at least 85% of the time to earn credit. Under the laws of Kansas, all students between the ages of seven and eighteen years (21 for special education students) must be in regular and continuous attendance at school unless lawfully excused therefrom. The law in Kansas (K.S.A. 72-1113) states that students are truant when they are inexcusably absent for three (3) consecutive schools days, five (5) or more school days in one semester, or seven (7) days in a school year. This includes partial day absences.

In the event that your student must be absent, contact the Attendance Center Hotline at 913-993-7845. It is important for contact to be made before noon on the day of absence, so that teachers are notified of excused absences.

When appointments are scheduled at the last minute, please call the Attendance Center so that a pass may be delivered to your child. Students who leave without checking out through the Attendance Center will be unexcused and possibly assigned disciplinary consequences. It is hoped that you and your student will be able to mutually make suitable and necessary adjustments that will enable him/her to obtain the maximum benefits of the educational opportunities provided by the Shawnee Mission School District.

In addition, an appeal process is available to students whose absences are a result of circumstances beyond the student's control. Waivers will be available in December and the deadline for waivers returned to the office is December 12, 2014. You and your student should complete an absence waiver from the Attendance Office and return that to the office with documentation supporting reasons for the absences. Please contact the attendance office at 993-7847 for more details if you believe your student qualifies for an attendance waiver.

IMPORTANT REMINDER:  All requests on a Seminar day (primarily Thursdays) for students leaving early for an appointment or for any reason must be requested prior to 9:00 am.  Seminar is a required class and attendance in the class in mandatory.

It is recommended that students bring a parental note before school to the attendance office to obtain a pass on the morning of an appointment or for any reason a student needs to be dismissed from class early.  This procedure insures that your student receives their pass and  dismissed at the requested time.

  • Collect information for the Financial Aid Application
    • Register for your PIN for the FAFSA at www.pin.ed.gov

Enrollment for 2015-2016

Choosing classes for next year is just around the corner.  In January, students will be given enrollment materials.  Students have about one week to look over the materials with parents and then have them ready to return when their class visits the Counseling Office.  Students should begin thinking about enrollment, asking teachers questions, and speaking with their counselors in November or December if they want help in planning for enrollment.

Don't Be Afraid To Ask For Help!

A Note to Exhausted Parents of Challenging Teens...

Don't give up!  Avoiding the issues is not going to help either!  Parents of consistently difficult teens ride an emotional roller coaster that frequently dips into confusion, frustration, anger, pain, guilt and exhaustion.  Ask for help during difficult times of trouble or even to PREVENT serious difficulty.  Find out what your options are.  Mary Lea Kieffer, our school Social Worker, can help you get started.  For confidential advice you can call Ms. Kieffer at 993-7836.

Communities in Schools Program

We are pleased to welcome LaShawn Childs to our Viking family as the Site Coordinator with the Communities in Schools program.  Her role will be to identify students at risk of not graduating and provide the resources necessary to help the student stay in school.  LaShawn can be reached at 993-7859 and is located in the Counseling Office.  She will be organizing school-wide programs but will also work more closely with a caseload of students.  Parent permission slips will be sent home if your student will be involved with the CIS Site Coordinator.  To learn more about this program, you can go to http://www.communitiesinschools.org.

Social Hosting

Social hosting, or unlawfully hosting, is generally defined as providing and/or serving alcohol to a young person who is under the minimum legal drinking age. It can take place in a party-like atmosphere or by any adult simply providing alcohol to young people for them to drink. It can even extend to parents and homeowners who are not on the premises and/or did not provide the alcohol. The   Kansas social host law was passed in 2004 as a result of the death of a Lenexa teen killed while driving home from a party, where he and other teens had been drinking.

If you are concerned about a party in your neighborhood that might involve underage individuals, contact your local police department or call 911.

Social Hosting

Hosting Teen Parties

· Agree on a guest list  - don't allow party crashers.

· Discuss ground rules before the party.

· Gain support from a trusted friend and other parents.

· Brainstorm fun activities for the party.

· If a guest brings alcohol into your home, ask him or her to leave.

· If a guest arrives under the influence, call their parents.

· Serve plenty of snacks and non-alcoholic drinks.

· Be visible and available-but don't join the party!

Red Ribbon Week - Take the Pledge!

Did you know...Children of parents who talk to their teens regularly about drugs are 42% less likely to use drugs than those who don't, yet only a quarter of teens report having these conversations.

Shawnee Mission West will be promoting The National Red Ribbon Week campaign for students, parents, faculty, and community members to unite and take a visible stand against substance abuse.  Please get involved by making the Red Ribbon Pledge by going to www.redribbon.org.

What's the pledge about?

1.    As parents and citizens, we will talk to our children and the children in our lives about the dangers of drug abuse.

2.    We will set clear rules for our children about not using drugs.

3.    We will set a good example for our children by not using illegal drugs or medicine without a prescription.

4.    We will monitor our children's behavior and enforce appropriate consequences, so that our rules are respected.

5.    We will encourage family and friends to follow the same guidelines to keep

children safe from substance abuse.

Take the Red Ribbon Pledge now!

SKYWARD FAMILY ACCESS

To request Family Access, each parent must complete a form in the Counseling Office and show picture ID.  Once that has happened, an e-mail will be sent to set up your account. Parents may view student schedules, attendance and grades on the Skyward Family Access website.  (There are also Apps for both Android or Apple devices that you can download so you can use Skyward on your phone.  However, more information may be seen on the desktop version). Parents may stop in the Counseling Office any time between 7:00 - 3:30 to take care of this.  Students can also access the same information through Student Access in Skyward.  Ask your student if they have set up their Student Access account.

Progress Reports and Grade Cards - these grade reports will not be printed this year.  You will need to view your student's grades through Family Access.  The school calendar will indicate what days progress reports and quarter grades can be viewed in Skyward.

Emergency Contacts - parents should go into their Family Access account and update emergency contacts for each student.  Follow these instructions:

1.  Login to your Skyward Family Access account.

2.  On the left side, click on "Student Info".

3.  On the right side, click on "Request change for (student name)."

4.  Click on "Add Emergency Contact."

5.  Enter the name and phone number of the emergency contact.  If this person is allowed to pick up your student from school (due to an illness or appointment), click on "Pick Up" and mark yes or no.

6.  Repeat if you would like to add an additional emergency contact.

With the new technology initiative, fall StuCo elections were held completely online this year. Voting turnout was better than years past and 44 new members were elected into council.

Executive Board attended the annual StuCo regional conference held at Mill Valley High School. They swapped ideas with other schools from around the region and learned more about leadership. SMW StuCo Executive Board, along with sponsors Nick Adams & Kelly Gill and principal Steve Loe, spent a day at Timber Ridge Adventure Course. They participated in team building activities and got to know each other better.

Homecoming will be held on October 18th. The theme is "Midnight in Paris." The parade is on Thursday October 16th at 1:30. Our Grand Marshals are Jan Berghaus and Karen Tritt, who were both former teachers at West.

CHOIR CONCERT: The Fall Choir Concert will be held Thursday, October 9, 2014 7:00pm.  Admission is free and refreshments are served after the event.  All of our choirs will perform.  It is always an enjoyable evening to listen to their music and support their efforts.  This will be the same evening as the "Relay for Life" event.  Plan to arrive early for parking.

THEATRE: Need a reason to step away from the homestead on Halloween!  Come see "Midsummer/Jersey" performed by the SMW theatre group.  A hilarious high-octane re-telling of Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream set on the boardwalk of a seaside town in Modern-day New Jersey.  The story revolves around the impending bound high school crushes, a lively crew of fairies and the staff of the local beauty salon.  There is love potion, mischief making backed by pop music and an iPhone-obsessed wood sprite......what a great show...don't miss it.  7:00pm October 30, 31 and Nov 1, 2014.  SMW Auditorium - Tickets go on sale October 27th at the school, or at the box office (opens at 6:00pm) the evenings of the shows.
