Message from Mr. Loe...
Viking Families,
It is truly an honor and privilege to serve as your principal at SM West. The welcome I have received from students, staff, parents, and community members has been overwhelming. I will say it once more. The strong bond that holds the West Community together is that unique element that sets it above many other school communities.
As you know, our district Digital Learning Initiative is well underway. I want to compliment our student body for their patience during this process. Deploying 1800 devices in three days was daunting and we faced several challenges. However, our Viking students were flexible and understanding and showed great maturity.
Thank you goes out to our parents and families during this process also. We appreciate the time you gave us during our parent meetings and your willingness to ask important questions about the Digital Learning Initiative. Your partnership in the process has been positive and is a critical piece in making this initiative a success.
Of course, I cannot say enough thank you's to our staff who have jumped right into the Digital Learning Initiative. Since last March, teachers have moved out of their comfort zone and have tackled new learning opportunities regarding the Apple devices. We will all continue to learn together. Our TLC Team (the technology leadership team within our building) has been a vital support system for our entire staff. Just last Friday Google rolled out a new application: Google Classroom. One of our TLC team members spent the weekend learning and navigating the application. On Monday we taught a couple staff members and then gave a mini-lesson to our entire faculty on Tuesday afternoon. Many teachers are now up and running Google Classroom for their students. This is just one example of how our teachers are taking the initiative to use the new technology to enhance our already strong curriculum. Your Viking staff members are true life-long learners!
Wow! Lots of new! Parents and families please do not forget to sign up for Skyward in order to have another line of communication regarding your student's academic progress and other areas of school life. From this point on, sign up will be in the counselor's office. Please make sure you bring a photo ID.
The year has started, and we are all very excited! It was great to see familiar faces at Back to School Night and to meet many new parents and families. Thank you for being involved. Please continue to be a partner in your student's high school experience. Come out to as many SM West events as you can.
West is Best!

parent & teacher conferences - october 22 & 24

We strongly urge ALL parents to participate in parent teacher conferences regardless of your child's course grade status. We have two convenient formats available.
The OPEN conference format is held in the gymnasiums, bridge and cafeteria. There is no need for appointments for these conferences. Plan to spend 7 - 10 minutes per teacher. If a parent and/or teacher would like to continue the conference past the allotted time, they should establish an appointment for a conference time on Friday afternoon allowing for a more private conversation.
If a parent cannot attend the October 22nd or 24th scheduled conference time, they should contact the teacher directly by phone or email to establish an appointment for an alternate time.
Wednesday evening, October 22nd 5:00 - 8:00 pm
All teachers will be available for conferences. Appointments are not required.
Teachers will be located in the main gym, auxiliary gym or bridge. A map will be provided.
Friday, October 24th 7:20 am - 3:20 pm
All teachers will be available for conferences. Appointments may be scheduled by contacting a teacher directly but are not required. Teachers will be located in their classrooms. A map will be provided.

SENIORS & COLLEGE PLANNING

Has your senior taken the ACT yet? Has your senior decided on a college or career path yet? Now is the time - our office recommends that seniors take the ACT for the last time in October or December of the senior year. (October for scholarship purposes at KU and K-State since they have November 1st scholarship application deadlines.)
So what else needs to be done?
- Pull the applications together. Seniors need to narrow their lists of colleges to five or so and review those with their academic/college counselor. They need to check application due dates and financial aid requirements from the colleges themselves.
- Do the student "brag" sheet (found on the Counseling web backpack). We'll use this in the Counseling Office to write recommendations for college and scholarships. The Parent Brag Sheet is also very helpful in preparing letters of recommendations.
- Put together a master calendar of all the application due dates are and tests being taken.
- Complete the online applications whenever possible, especially for our state universities (KU, K-State, Wichita, Emporia, Pittsburg, Ft. Hays).
- Sign up to take the ACT and, if necessary, the SAT.
- Check out the FAFSA4Caster and establish your pin number for the FAFSAA: go online to www.fafsa.gov .
- Scholarships: Check the web backpack regularly for updates.
- Check out Career Cruising on the Career Counseling section of the SMW Counseling Web Backpack to do career research and interest assessments.
- November 1st is the Scholarship Deadline for KU and K-State. Check college websites for other deadlines.

VIKING ATHLETICS

Viking Athletes and Parents,
Welcome to another exciting season of Viking games and activities. I am proud of the Viking tradition of support of our teams. To recognize that support at football games this year, we will be beginning a tradition by designating those fans as the 12th man. Leading the football team this year on to the field will be a yell leader carrying a flag with the number 12 on it. This flag will then be brought to the sideline where we will recognize the outstanding Viking fan for that game. I challenge our opponents to support their programs with the same enthusiasm and sportsmanship as has been exhibited for years by Viking fans.
Viking Excellence and Pride start in the halls and classrooms of West, but are also demonstrated on the fields of competition. Whether it is winning a state championship or reaching a personal best on the cross country course or a gymnastic event, all Vikings are expected to do their best, support their team members, and be outstanding representative of their school and community. As the Vikings of the past have set a high standard, let those of 2014-15 reach even higher and continue the tradition of "West is Best".
I am sure the West fans and community will again set itself apart from the rest; by the players demonstrating outstanding effort and athleticism, the coaches showing great leadership, and the Viking fans exhibiting support and good sportsmanship. So, let the season begin and the traditions continue to grow, and let's all enjoy the games and the creation of lifetime friendships and memories.
Go Vikings!!!!!!!

Athletic Director

Consider joining Spotlighters, the parent-run organization that supports these two award-winning departments at West. We assist Mrs. VanLeeuwen and Mr. Reiff with concerts, shows and activities throughout the year. Membership dollars go towards helping the teachers achieve their goals, as well as to fund several scholarships for seniors. Get involved and enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at our awesome concerts and productions. Click here to download a Spotlighter's Membership Form.
Watch the Spotlighters website - www.smwspotlighters.com - for up-to-date information about Theatre and Choir. Our meetings are held on the first Monday of the month at 6pm in the Choir Room. Please join us.
All committees can use assistance through the year, so let us know if you are interested in any of these opportunities.
