Message from Dr. Crain...
Dear Colleagues and Friends:
It is with a very heavy heart that I leave SM West. Many of you know that my husband, Thimios Zaharopoulos, has been on a leave of absence from his position, Vice President for Global and Lifelong Learning, at Park University, this entire school year. He has been working as Provost at the American College of Greece, in Athens. He has a great opportunity to stay on in Greece in a multiple-year contract.
As is the case with two-career couples, sometimes you have to make sacrifices. I need to leave to be with him. I have truly enjoyed my role at West this year, working with the students, colleagues and parents. Family is what it's all about and even though I adore my West Viking Family, my personal family trumps.
I am extremely grateful to Dr. Hinson for allowing me to take a leave of absence from SMSD for personal/foreign travel in this situation. Please know, however, that I won't be back at West. If my Greek Odyssey doesn't work out and I return to SMSD, it will be at their discretion if a position is available. I will continue to work tirelessly in the transition for the new principal to come on board, get set up and keep all progress at West going forward.
The district will be actively working to fill the position of principal at SM West with an outstanding leader who will continue to focus on providing excellent educational opportunities for each student. Please be assured that district leaders are committed to ensuring a smooth transition and continued success for the entire SM West community.
Even as hard as it will be to leave a place that means so much, I am excited by this opportunity and know that it is the right next step for me. I look forward to seeing many of you before the school year officially comes to an end.

FOOD SERVICE...Did you know...
Did you know that money on a student's meal account will roll over to next year? Whatever money is on their account the last day of school will transfer to next year even if your student changes schools within the district. Negative balances will also transfer so it's important to clear those up before the end of school.
Seniors - Any money left on a senior's account will be refunded. After the senior's account has been reconciled, the refunds are automatically sent by mail in late June.
Free and Reduced meal applications will be available for the 2014-2015 school year on July 14. You will be able to apply for the program online and it will be available at http://foodservices.smsd.org on July 14. We encourage you to use the online application process as it will speed up the approval process. If you don't have access to a computer, you can visit the food service office and apply online there. Paper applications will still be available in our Food Service office at 6701 W. 83rd in the Broadmoor Technical Center Room 120 or at the school. A new application (per family) must be submitted each year. If you receive state assistance, call the food service office at 913-993-9710 before completing an application. Please apply before school starts so you can begin receiving your benefits the first day of school. It can take up to 10 days to process your application and you will be responsible for any meals your student buys before your application is processed. Waiver of Confidentiality letters for kindergarteners can also be submitted online for anyone using the online application process.

All food and beverage items must be in compliance for next school year. As we receive guidance from USDA and KSDE, we will communicate with all stakeholders and have the information available on the food service webpage.

News From The Counseling Dept
|
We continually update our web backpack, so please check our website for important information on a variety of topics.
http://www4.smsd.org/SMWCounselors/
|
CHANGES IN THE COUNSELING OFFICE
Counselor assignments are based on the student's last name:
A - C | Mr. Tommie Davis
| D - G ELL Center Students | Dr. Lynn Leonard | H - L | Mr. Rick Rogers | M - P | Mrs. Katy Reda | Q - T | Ms. Chris Foster | U - Z | Mrs. Cindy Neely | Social Worker | Ms. Mary Lea Kieffer |
|
Students will receive their class schedules in August after their fees have been paid. Counselors are continuing to work on schedules and balance classes until fee payment time. Many classes are full; so, there will be little room for students to change their mind about their original requests.
However, counselors will work with students to make schedule adjustments for the following reasons:
1) Failed a prerequisite course.
2) Seniors who need to meet a graduation requirement.
3) Completing a course in summer school.
4) Health of a student (doctor's note required).
Also, we will continue the West tradition of pushing students to challenge themselves academically. If a student signed up for an Honors or AP class, the principal would like the student to give themselves a chance to succeed at the more challenging level for the first semester. Therefore, no student will be allowed to drop an Honors or AP class without consulting with the principal first.
|
These classes have summer assignments that need to be completed prior to school starting in August. These assignments can be found on the Counseling web backpack.
- Biology 1 Honors
 - English 9 Honors
- English 10 Honors
- AP English 11 English Language
- AP English 12 English Literature
- AP US History (book/assignment should have been obtained from Mr. Walker, he'll leave additional ones in the Counseling Office.)
- AP American Government

The hours must be completed over a twelve month period beginning 4/1/14 and ending 3/31/15. The students self-report the service hours and at the completion of the tracking period return the completed service hour form to the Counseling Office to be submitted for the award.
At the predetermined deadline, the committee chair will compile the information necessary for submission of the students for the award. The awards are applied for online on the Presidential Service Award website, www.presidentialserviceawards.gov.
The awards will be delivered to SMW and the Counseling Office and SMW Administration will determine how and when recognition will be scheduled.

SENIORS -- Begin NOW to Plan for College
Seniors should be taking the ACT and/or the SAT for college entrance if they have not already done so. The ACT is offered on September 13th, but the registration deadline is Friday, August 8th. Students will need to register for this test in the summer time if they want to take this ACT. The next ACT will be October 25th. Other test dates and registration information can be found at the testing websites.
ACT registration: www.actstudent.org
SAT registration: www.collegeboard.com
Senior year whizzes by quickly! Summer is an excellent opportunity for incoming seniors to begin their college search. In fact, by the end of summer, seniors should have most of their college search completed. Use the summer to explore websites, visit campuses, and prepare for upcoming exams.
Many colleges have early deadlines for scholarships and admission. For example, both KU and KSU have a November 1st deadline to apply for scholarships. So, students would want to complete their ACT and/or SAT testing by that date.
|
By the end of summer you should have completed your list of colleges where you would like to apply. Your college research should include a profile of college costs, admission requirements, and study programs.
Search colleges using the internet. Examples include:
http://student.collegeboard.org/?student
www.anycollege.com
www.petersons.com
Take a virtual tour with online videos of college and universities
www.campustours.com
Narrow your list of possible colleges to three categories:
- 2-3 schools that you could definitely get in
- 2-3 schools that you could probably get in
- 3-5 schools that you would like to get it
Visit prospective colleges. It is important that you visit schools you might want to attend. Schedule your visit at least two weeks in advance. Call the admissions office to arrange the visit and ask if you can sit in on classes, visit the dorm, talk with a professor, and take a campus tour. Speak to faculty and students and ask LOTS of questions. Ask students what they like the best and least about their school. TAKE notes!!
Request applications and brochures from your top colleges.
Create files with each college you are applying to and track your progress.
Create a resume of things that you have been involved in both in and out of school. This is your opportunity to show colleges what sets you apart from other applicants. There are four things important to schools in admitting students: academic record which includes your transcript and your test scores, extra-curricular involvement, essays (if required) and recommendations (If required). Schools like to see leadership positions and community involvement. They look for scope and depth; you have started something and committed to it rather than a listing of many different clubs or organizations.
College bound student athletes: Students interested in continuing their athletic career at the next level will need to prove academic eligibility. Colleges fall under various categories (NCAA, NAIA, D3, NJCAA) each having its own standards and procedures for demonstrating academic eligibility. For NCAA D1 or D2, students must register through the NCAA Eligibility center at www.eligibilitycenter.org. NAIA schools, www.playnaia.org.
MyMajors.com has a quiz that will recommend a list of college majors. They have over 1,800 majors, 7,500 colleges and 42,000 careers to research. Students can find colleges and universities by the majors offered as well as location, school size and other criteria they find important in making a college choice. Go to www.mymajors.com to start the quiz.

VIKING ATHLETICS

Viking Athletes and Parents,
Now that the summer is upon us, I hope you are staying busy and enjoying being with family and friends. Perhaps work, camps, practices and games are experiences that you have scheduled during the summer that you enjoy and will improve your skills for the 2014-15 school year and athletic seasons. However, there are several other things I hope you schedule and take care of during the summer months that will help the next school year start smoothly.
If you have not enrolled in athletic camps or summer weight lifting, you can visit our website and see our camp brochure and get times and costs. You can also contact the coach directly by email and he/she will get you taken care of. When all else fails, feel free to email me at donperkins@smsd.org and I will get the information you need.
Before the next school year, you also need to have a sports physical and a completed concussion form on file in the athletic office. You can find these forms on our website. If you print a form from the website, please make sure you print the complete physical form, not just the part the doctor completes - we must have the complete form. These can be turned in at any time during the summer when the office is open.
Finally, I hope you make plans to join our outstanding Booster Club. This group supports all athletics at West and is instrumental in our athletes looking good and achieving success. If you are interested in supporting the West athletic community, this is the group you need to get involved with. Their presidents this year are Bob and Susan Holcomb and if you want to get started contact Susan at rjhawks@everestkc.net.
I hope you make the most of these summer months and are ready for an exciting 2014-15 school year. If you plan on being an athlete at West, that means taking care of those items I mentioned above. I look forward to seeing you in the fall.
Sincerely,
Don Perkins
Athletic Director

The American Cancer Society is looking forward to partnering with Shawnee Mission West and many student volunteers to host the 7th All Youth Relay For Life held at Shawnee Mission School West on Thursday, October 9th, 2014.
Relay For Life is a fun-filled, overnight event that mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate survivors, remember loved ones, and raise money for the fight against cancer.
Relay For Life is a great way for students to get involved in their community in a fun event and help save the lives of those with cancer. Each participant is asked to raise additional funds from donations. All participants, regardless of age, must have a Permission Form signed by their parent or legal guardian. In addition, the Relay For Life will be an outdoor, lock - in environment for the entirety of the event.
The festivities will get underway at 6:00 p.m. Friday evening and conclude at 6:00 a.m. Saturday morning.
Volunteers are needed to organize and recruit teams, seek community support, coordinate logistics, find refreshments and prizes, plan entertainment, and lend their support in any way. Needless to say, we need your support to make this event successful.

This is a memorable night for our children and a chance for them to be together on their last day of school.
A committee of parents has started making plans for the best Senior Sizzle ever! Look for a letter with more details in your summer packet. We'll have a Senior Sizzle meeting at 6 pm on Tuesday, August 26 in the Cafeteria. We'd love to have you help us in any way you can, so mark your calendar now to come to the meeting.
Parents and students can follow us on Facebook and Twitter for the latest news.

Are you a fan of the performing arts? Do you have a child in Choir or Theatre productions? Consider joining Spotlighters, the parent-run organization that supports these two award-winning departments at West. We assist Mrs. VanLeeuwen and Mr. Reiff with concerts, shows and activities throughout the year. Membership dollars go towards helping the teachers achieve their goals, as well as to fund several scholarships for seniors.
