Message from Dr. Crain...
Rebirth
Spring is a time of renewal, rebirth, renaissance - and it is so needed to come quickly this year at West. I rush to shed this winter's coat and I'm eager to replace it with daily sprinkles of spring lilies, smiles, outdoor sports, peonies, prom, laughs, tulips and graduation. Let's not miss any important events this spring, though, in our haste. Keep track of deadlines, especially for seniors, events and schedules on-line and on our website. Call us at 993-7800 if you can't find information.
One-to-One Devices coming for all West students
In a ground-breaking decision, the SMSD school board voted January 27, 2013, for the superintendent to continue with a technology proposal for the district that puts a device in every student's hands for the school year in August 2014. Our teachers will be assigned their devices in early March and trained in the spring on the Ipad Air and MacBook Air. This technology is what we've been pushing this past year at West as "Training and Technology Takes Us to the Top" in every aspect of the curriculum from Biotech to art to world regional studies. There will be a lot of questions and answers as this initiative rolls out so keep your eyes and ears to the website for more information.
Coach Bishop
Our friend and colleague, Teacher Tim Bishop, passed away February 15, 2014, at his home in Olathe, KS, from a sudden heart attack. Tim started in Shawnee Mission School District August 24, 1988. The following paragraphs are Tim's obituary which I believe are important to memorialize. He gave our students 25 years of his service- his life. I will be leading a collection for a memorial of Coach Bishop's legacy to West's students.
Tim attended Allen County Community College and played basketball while attending school. After graduating from Pittsburg State University in 1986, he began his teaching and coaching career in Yates Center, KS, eventually moving to Shawnee Mission West High School where he presently taught Physical Education and coached basketball and boys and girls golf. He earned his Master's Degree in Physical Education in 1999 from Pittsburg State University.
Timothy is survived by his loving wife Dawn, his children Blake (age 15), Luke (age 11), and Claire (age 8), his father Roy Bishop, and his sister Jill Ost and husband Aaron. Also surviving are three nieces, Alyssa and Megan Decker, and Kate Ost, and nephew McCoy Slinkard, and mother and father-in-law Terry and Lois Slinkard, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Marty Slinkard and Daphne Decker, and a host of loving family and friends.
He was a proud member of the PGA Association and immensely enjoyed playing golf with many of his friends, rain or shine, day or night. As a result of many years of practice and enjoyment, he achieved a handicap of 4! Over the years, Tim proudly coached a number of student athletes, taking many of them to State Championships. His passion to coach and mentor others was the result of the influence of his father, Roy, whom he respected and desired to emulate. His family was his first priority, and he enjoyed spending time with his children every weekend while his wife, Dawn, worked as a nurse at Olathe Medical Center. Tim enjoyed taking Blake fishing, coaching Luke and all his friends in basketball, and attending Claire's musical performances while always supporting and caring for his family.

Senior Parents
Shawnee Mission West High School does not sponsor or approve an activity called "Senior Skip Day". Please do not allow your student to participate in any such activity.
Students participating in extracurricular activities need to be aware that participation in a "Senior Skip Day" will result in non-participation on that day and could result in further disciplinary consequences. |
Unsupervised Students
Parents are reminded that students should arrange to leave campus as close to 3:00 p.m. as possible unless they are under the direct supervision of a teacher or coach. This is a safety issue, and everyone's cooperation is needed. Students who continue to loiter in the building or on campus will be subject to discipline. |
FOOD SERVICE...Did you know...
Did you know that breakfast is available each day at your student's school?
Breakfast is a good indicator of doing well at school. Research shows that school breakfast:
- decreases risk of food insecurity;
- may protect against childhood obesity;
- improves children's academic performance, whereas skipping breakfast and experiencing hunger impair development and learning;
- can decrease visits to the school nurse;
- often improves behavior in school
If it is difficult to fit breakfast into your morning routine, breakfast is available in all schools. A student must choose a full portion of at least three different items to receive a reimbursable school breakfast. One of the three items must be ½ cup of fruit or juice. Breakfast items include: entrée, grain, fruit/juice, and milk.
Don't forget - if your child receives free or reduced meals, they are eligible for one breakfast and one lunch per day as part of this benefit. All breakfast and lunch meal choices are available for all students regardless of eligibility status.
The school breakfast menus, lunch menus, and other nutrition information are available on the district's website at foodservices.smsd.org. |

Kansas Assessment Testing

Summer School and E-school Enrollment
Summer School enrollment has been available since February 10th. Online enrollment can be completed on the district website at www.smsd.org then click on the "Parents & Students" followed by a click on "Summer School". If a student enrolls in person at Broadmoor, a signed form from the counselor is required. Some classes can fill up quickly so students should not delay in enrolling for summer school if they know they need to attend. Students who have failed an English class should definitely plan on attending summer school. Summer school will be held at Shawnee Mission Northwest this summer. Each semester of summer school costs $170.
Students who are interested in doing Health or American Government through e-school need to enroll by Friday, May 5th. The cost for taking a course through the district's online school is $160. These classes can also fill up quickly. Information is on the district website under "Parents & Students" followed by a click on "eSchool". |
Senior Academic Awards Assembly
The Spring Senior Academic Awards Assembly will be held on Wednesday, April 30th, at 7:40 a.m.. This program is for seniors and their parents. Information will be sent out in April to recipients of awards. |
Stepping Stone Summer Study Scholarship
Stepping Stone Scholarships from the Shawnee Mission Education Foundation help Shawnee Mission high school juniors take a step toward their future by attending summer study programs between their junior and senior year. Students explore academic interests and future career choices in an intensive environment on a college campus. Students can download the application from their website and turn in to their counselor. Deadline to apply is Wednesday, March 26, 2104.
For more information, click here: http://smef.org/s/1485/2_interior.aspx?sid=1485&gid=1&pgid=306 |
AP testing will take place the weeks of May 5th and May 12th. The cost for each test is $89 and the payment deadline is March 7th. This is a firm deadline as tests must be ordered ahead of time. Please note that some AP tests are scheduled after the seniors' last day. Cancellations PRIOR to the test day may qualify for a partial refund. Any cancellations on the day of the test will not qualify for any refund.
There are several reasons students should consider taking AP tests:
- The AP test must be taken to receive the AP designation on the transcript
- Earn college credit and/or advanced placement at most colleges and universities depending on the score received
- Earn consideration for AP Scholar Awards
- Gain valuable experience in rigorous exams (SAT, ACT, MCAT, LSAT)

FAFSA and Scholarship Information
Remember that the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) must be filed as soon as possible. Most schools in Kansas have a March 1st priority deadline, but you can still file after that date. Students receiving merit-based scholarships should contact the financial aid at their college to determine if they need to file the FAFSA if they don't believe they will qualify for any additional need-based aid. You can file the FAFSA by going to: www.fafsa.ed.gov. If you have questions about the Student Aid Report that comes from your student's college, you should contact the financial aid officer at the college where your student plans to attend.

Playing Sports in College
Any athlete who wishes to receive an athletic scholarship or even participate in intercollegiate athletics at the Division I, Division II or an NAIA School must receive initial academic clearance from the respective eligibility center. It is recommended to begin the application process at the start of the student's junior year in high school.
Full requirement details along with the online application can be found at web1.ncaa.org... for NCAA Division I and II schools and at www.playnaia.org/ for NAIA institutions. |
ACT Test for Juniors

Juniors should be taking the ACT (if they have not already taken at least one ACT this year) to begin preparation for college admission. There are two test dates still available this spring. Register at www.actstudent.org. If a student is on free or reduced lunch, a fee waiver is available from the Counseling Office. Our school code is 172-773.
Test prep websites and classes are listed on the Counseling Web Backpack under "Testing".
Test Date | Registration Deadline | Late Registration Deadline | 12-Apr | 7-Mar | 21-Mar | June 14 (not at West) | 9-May | 23-May |
The next ACT test date will be September 13, 2014. The registration deadline will be during the summer months (August 2014). Class of 2015 students should plan on taking this ACT to improve scores for college admission and scholarship purposes or take it for the first time if they do not take it this spring. |
Presidential Service Award
We want to recognize your student for their dedication of services to our community!
SMW students may apply for the Presidential Service Award by tracking their service hours on the sheet available from the Counseling Office (see attached sheet to print) or on the SM West website. The hours must be completed over a twelve month period beginning 4/1/13 and ending 3/31/14. The students self-report the service hours and at the completion of the tracking period return the completed service hour form to the Counseling Office to be submitted for the award.
Forms need to be turned in by 4/4/14 to the Counseling Office. The committee chair then compiles the information necessary for submission of the students for the award. The awards are applied for online on the Presidential Service Award website, www.presidentialserviceawards.gov. |
College Now
College Now is a program through Johnson County Community College where students can earn college credit by taking certain classes at their high school. College Now is a concurrent credit program, so your high school enrollment stands separate from your JCCC enrollment. The 24 credit limit of College Now credits has been lifted by the state. This is great news as students can earn as many College Now credits as they choose while in high school. Courses at Shawnee Mission West where students can also earn college credits through JCCC include:
Spanish 4 |
AP US Govt. & Politics |
Physics 1 H |
H Spanish 5 |
AP MicroEconomics |
AP Biology 2 |
French 4 |
AP MacroEconomics |
AP Chemistry 2 |
H French 5 |
AP US History |
AP Statistics |
German 4 H |
Programming in JAVA Adv. |
AP Calculus AB |
AP English 12 |
AP Computer Science |
AP Calculus BC |
Visit www.jccc.edu/collegenow (click "Admission and Enrollment Information") for detailed instructions on how to receive college credit for your classes. The cost per credit hour for this year is $85, but the JCCC board of trustees has the right to change the cost per credit hour without notice. Mrs. Neely in the Counseling Office can answer additional questions about College Now.
College Now deadlines cannot be extended. Students are strongly encouraged to begin the process early (for example, applying and taking the COMPASS test over the summer or taking the ACT for math, science, and English placement). College Now students are considered students of JCCC and are afforded the same privileges as on-campus students - access to the library, tutoring, gymnasium, etc. College Now students are also subject to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. Visit www.jccc.edu and search FERPA for more information on this federally-mandated privacy law. JCCC is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools; therefore, a majority of the credits will transfer. It is the student's responsibility to check with the admission or advising office at the institution one may wish to attend to ensure transferability of courses.
We also have an agreement with Baker University to offer credit for AP Psychology and the Teacher Education Program. More information about this option will be presented to the students in that class. These credit hours are separate from the 24 credit limit for JCCC. The cost this year has been $100 per credit hour. Both of these classes are 3 credits. Mrs. Neely can also answer questions about the concurrent credit program options with Baker University.

Promoting a Safe Prom
High school proms are very expensive affairs. The prom dresses and tuxedos, prom tickets and pictures, limos, extravagant dining, flowers, and those special hairstyles and manicures can add up quickly for one special event that they want to remember the rest of their life.
For parents, however, the primary prom-related concerns aren't financial. Parents' biggest prom worries are the risky behaviors associated with proms, most specifically driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs and unsafe sex. Prom night always seems to be linked with drunken-driving injuries and deaths, date rapes, pregnancies and STDs. Don't let this happen to your child. The following tips may ease your prom anxieties, while helping to keep your kids as safe as possible:
Prom Safety Tips
Talk, talk, talk -- Tell your children that you want them to have a wonderful, memorable prom. Keep that wish as a central focus. They need to give you their complete itinerary for the evening, including whom they will be with, where they'll be going after the prom and the phone numbers where you can contact them. "We'll just be driving around" is not an acceptable response. Come to a fair decision on a curfew, based upon your children's past level of responsibility in this area. Express your concerns about their health and safety and explain to them why prom night makes it more difficult to make safe and smart decisions. Don't be vague -- discuss drinking, drugging, driving under the influence, and sex. Ask them how they plan to keep safe and avoid actions they will regret. Reinforce your belief in their character and in their ability to act responsibly.
The Ride -- If they're not driving themselves, you must know who'll be driving them. Regardless of how many times you have talked about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, emphasize that these dangers are particularly high on prom night. Your children cannot drink or take drugs and drive. They also must be driven by someone who has not drunk alcohol or taken drugs. You need their promise on these rules. These rules are non-negotiable.
The Connection -- If your children are not returning home right after the prom, you need to be able to contact them at all times until they return home. You also need to be reachable at all times as well. There can be no doubt where your kids will be and with whom throughout the evening and morning. If they're going to other kids' houses after the prom, check ahead of time with these children's parents. You also have a right and a responsibility to ask if these parents are going to allow drinking in their homes. Many parents believe that as long as they "take keys" in a situation like this that underage drinking is permissible in their houses. You must answer the question, "Do I want my kids at after-prom parties where parents aren't present?" Post-prom, parent-child check-in calls make sense. Establish a couple of mandatory call-in times with your kids.
The Offer -- Give your children the unconditional option of calling you at any time for help or advice. That includes picking them up at any time of day or night, with a promise not to shame or humiliate them in front of others. Assure them that you always welcome being part of their making smart and safe decisions. This unconditional offer of help and advice should be an outstanding offer throughout their lives.

Viking Athletics
Spring sports kick off Monday, March 3. In order to be able to participate in tryouts, a complete physical form and a concussion and head injury information release form must be on file in the athletic department by Friday, February, 28 or before. Waiting to turn in required forms the day practices and tryouts begin will delay eligibility to participate. No student can participate without these documents being on file with the athletic department. All physical and concussion forms can be handed in directly to the athletic secretary.
Helpful hint; it is a good idea to keep a copy of your child's physical for your records.
Spring Coaches
It is never too early to start planning for fall sports. Fall athletes can get a physical for next school year beginning May 1, 2014. No need to hang onto the physical until school begins in August. Turn it in as soon as it is complete. They are reviewed by the athletic secretary then given to the school nurse and placed in your student's file.

PTSA Scholarships Available
Graduating seniors who are members of PTSA are invited to apply for a $300 scholarship. Students must be in good standing in PTSA and have at least a 2.5 GPA. Deadline to apply is April 1. Scholarship winners will be recognized at the April 21 PTSA meeting. Applications are available on the PTSA website or click here. Applications are also available in the school counseling office. Thank you to our PTSA Parent Volunteers
Thank you so much to all the parents that have helped not only set up for our 4 after parties and 2 parties this year but that helped at all the events throughout the year.
Without you these functions would not be the success they have been. Please know when comparing our attendance to other schools we blow the numbers out and it is because we have the best parents in the district!!!
Special gratitude goes to Rebecca Geracie for the delicious food and Val Barth and Teri Kelly for the great decorations!! |
Winter events are finally in the rear view mirror. WPA went smoothly and the decorations looked wonderfully nautical; Anchors, white lights, and a lighthouse decorated the bridge. Unfortunately, the Sweetheart Royalty could not be crowned before the dance due to snow days, but they were crowned at halftime of the game on February 18th. We would like to thank PTSA for their help in running the dance. Their chocolate fountain was a hit with the students.
Students were offered a fun matchmaking service during seminar. We sold the results on the bridge, raising $944.40. We will vote over how to divide the money that we raised. Originally, we planned to donate all of the proceeds to SafeHome. In the light of recent events, we are planning to discuss options to divide that money between SafeHome and a memorial for Mr. Bishop.
With Spring in sight, StuCo elections are just around the corner. The 2014-2015 Student Body Officer elections will take place before class officer elections. The signups for Student Body Officers will take place February 24th through the 27th. The tickets will campaign the following week, and the election will take place on Friday, March 7th. Those interested in joining the Exec Board will need to turn in their application on the same day. With the new Student Body Officers elected, Exec Board interviews will take place March 10th through the 14th. After spring break, students wishing to be a 2014-2015 class officer will need to sign up from March 25th to the 28th. Candidates will be able campaign the next week, with elections on Friday, April 4th.
The lighthouse contained a strobe light to add pizazz to the dance floor. Lifesavers stood at the entrance, with a wall of hanging twine balls behind them. |
PROM
This year's Prom is at Union Station on Saturday April 26, 2014 from 8-11 PM.
Tickets will be $25 a person and go on sale the week before Prom.
Now is a good time to start planning for Prom!! Donations are being received for dresses and Men's attire that students can choose from.
Plans are well underway and a photo booth and pictures will be available for purchase the night of the dance. |
