FROM THE MYA ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Catherine Weening, a graduate of Marist High School in Bayonne, NJ and a student a Pace University, became Co-Chair of the MYAAC during its Winter meeting.
Dear Fellow Marists,
I hope this newsletter finds you all well! It's hard to believe Lent has already begun. It feels like Ash Wednesday crept up in the liturgical calendar-wasn't Christmas only just yesterday?
During the MYA Ash Wednesday Chat, a few of us discussed what Lent means to us. Is it about giving something up? Doing something extra? Some sort of happy medium?
What often gets lost in between the Friday bacon cravings and the Lenten Buzzfeed quizzes (yup, those exist), is this: Lent is a time for personal preparation. We are preparing for Christ's death and resurrection, and looking at how that has affected each of us. Lent is not a one-size-fits-all season; it's up to us to reflect on why we give something up/do something extra/etc., rather than on what. Lent gives us the opportunity to stop, reflect on where we've been in our faith, and think about where we're going.
And that isn't always easy! Oftentimes I find it difficult to focus when the semester is in full-swing. If you're having the same problem, then try tuning into our Online Lenten Retreat videos or check out the daily Lenten Scripture posts on Facebook and Twitter. You are not alone in your Lenten journey! You have the support of an entire community behind you.
God bless you this Lent, and keep being Marist!

Catherine Weening

REGIONAL EVENTS - ONLINE EVENTS -
AND MORE
| The future "new look" of the MYA website. |
During February most of the Marist regions in the United States experienced extreme cold or relatively low temperatures so this month's activities took to the indoors, or more specifically took place online and via social media.
Several Marist Young Adults began the season of Lent on Ash Wednesday by sharing their thoughts in an online chat called #ashtag. Resources from Busted Halo and Online Ministries at Creighton University were shared to help prepare for Lent and the Ash Wednesday conversation..."Daily Devos." are being shared via social media for each of the forty days of Lent. Each day's devotional consists of a two to three sentence reflection, a link to a scripture reading and a suggested action...Marists throughout the country (and beyond) are participating in the annual online Lenten Retreat. This year reflections on the Sunday gospels are being offered by Catherine Weening, Michelle Khawam, and Novice Brothers James Hodge, Sam Amos and Jack O'Sullivan...February Marist Monday Challenges have focused on events during the month: Groundhog Day, Presidents' Weekend and the first International Day of Prayer and Awareness against Human Trafficking. Participants were challenged to come out of their holes and commit an act of holiness, to act as servant leaders and to be conscious consumers...Work on the refreshed look for the MYA website will soon be complete. In addition to its new look, the website will contain new features such as a FAQ section...During February
Danny Chomat, Kevin Macalos, Luis Ramos and
Franklin Richards added new blog posts. Many other prayers, notices and pictures are routinely posted, tweeted and shared or "pushed" via the MYA app. Don't be left out.
And in other news..."I Can't Keep Calm..." stickers have been appearing all over the Marist world - in Rome, in Mexico, in Africa and beyond.

ONLINE RESOURCES
Lent continues though the month of March. Here are some resources that you might find helpful during this time of reflection, fasting and service.
The Global Catholic Climate Movement is proposing that "we pray and fast for the renewal of our relationship with creation and with our brothers and sisters in poverty who are already suffering the impacts of man-made climate change." To achieve this proposal they are sponsoring a fast from food and/or activities that produce carbon dioxide. The Movement is also providing materials to prepare for the fast , a carbon fast calendar and links to prayers on creation stewardship. Click on the icon above for more information.
(Thanks to Br. John Dunning for suggesting this resource.)
In addition to fasting, many people try to eat more intentionally during Lent. Ave Maria Press is offering "Forty Days of Soups" which features recipes and daily meditations for your meals both on their website and via Facebook. They are also offering a free card-sized plan for "Turning Meals into Meditation". Click on the above icon to view the recipes.
