The Grim Reaper versus the Voice of Awareness

Truth be told, this edition was a huge challenge for me to write. Not because of lack of good content but because of too much. You'll be happy to know I calmed the whirling dervish brain down to two topics and two bits of really good news. Here goes...

From the Grim Reaper side of things: Recent radio show guest Janet Nudelman, Director of Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and Director of Program and Policy, Breast Cancer Fund, pretty much provided scientific evidence that there are harmful chemicals in plastics, in our cosmetics, in our household products, in our food, and in our air and water. Maybe I knew all that but I usually tackle each one of those one topic at a time. Ms. Nudelman went on to inform me and our listeners about pregnancy and childhood exposures and stated that globally, breast cancer affects more women than any other type of cancer and is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women. In case you were not aware of it, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, when pink ribbons blanket everything from cosmetics to food cans, urging us to be aware of breast cancer. But when 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with the disease, how much more awareness do we need? What we need is to go beyond the pink from awareness to prevention! I asked myself "What might I do to encourage the hundreds of people who read my newsletter to either 1. Listen to the entire show or 2. Visit the Breast Cancer Fund Website and REALLY spend some time there because if you do, you will know better, you will do better and the reaper will be grim no more. The show and the site will give you hope and the life you save may be your own or the life of someone you dearly love. Please?

On the Voice of Awareness side: We FINALLY have an international, famous, smart and amazing human being raising awareness about climate change! His name is Pope Francis and he is now officially one of my new heroes. The release of his 184 page Encyclical totally reveals that he has done what the Washington Post calls "deep dive into climate SCIENCE." According to the Post article published on June 18th, Pope Francis warns of "synthetic agrotoxins" harming birds and insects and "bioaccumulation" from industrial waste. He calls for renewable fuel subsidies and "maximum energy efficiency." And although he offers prayers at the beginning and end of his heavily anticipated missive on the environment, Pope Francis unmasks himself not only as a very green pontiff, but also as a total policy wonk. I ask you to press pause here and ask yourself - can you think of any other world leader even mentioning climate change on a regular basis let alone urging us all to make changes like taking public transit, carpooling, planting trees, turning off unnecessary lights, recycling - and boycotting certain products. Imagine that! Now if we can only get him on the show - I know plenty of people who would be more than happy to act as official interpreter. Disclaimer: I did not read the entire 184 pages of the Encyclical but if anyone out there has and would like to be a guest on MGW, email us!

Welcome To Our TWO Newest Partners!

We are thrilled, excited and downright joyous to announce two new businesses now working in partnership with Mrs. Green's World to help create an even bigger global community of people who care about the planet. Welcome to BeachFleischman and Whole Foods Market!

On BeachFleischman: It was founded in 1990 and has become one of Arizona's largest LOCALLY owned accounting and business advisory services firm. I can tell you from over 20 years of experience in working with them, they believe in the power of collaboration and of being good partners in the communities in which they live, work and operate. I also know from experience that they encourage all of their staff to be involved with non-profits and that the partners lead by example. Stay tuned for updates about our partnership to learn more about them, their culture and the services they provide. It's going to be a great, green evolution!

On Whole Foods Market: Whole Foods Market is an AMERICAN supermarket chain that first opened in 1980 specializing in organic food. Here is what I know about Whole Foods - they support the little guy often turning them into the big good guys. Case in point? Isabella's Ice Cream which was started in Tucson, Arizona and is now nationwide, and Kids Konserve, started in Phoenix, Arizona with a complete line of waste-free lunch kits, stainless steel containers, and other reusable lunch-packing solutions for the whole family. When I go into any Whole Foods store anywhere in the country, I seek out the signs indicating "local baker, local farmer, local anything." I like the energy in their stores, I like their commitment to education and I love that they believe we have the right to know what's in our food. Check out their page on GMOs including their downloadable list of foods that are Non-GMO Project Verified Products. I am also willing to pay a little bit more to buy food that I know is not harmful to my body. Stay tuned for some fun excellent adventures between Whole Foods Market and Mrs. Green's World in the months to come!

Coral Reef Conservation
Michael W. Beck, Lead Scientist, Global Marine Team, The Nature Conservancy
Mike Beck works on the interface between marine science and policy on marine spatial planning, habitat restoration, and coral reef conservation in temperate and tropical regions. His work increasingly focuses on developing decision support approaches to build coastal resilience and on the links between disaster risk reduction, climate adaptation, and environmental restoration. I am fascinated on a daily basis on any news concerning the state of our planet's ocean, their inhabitants and their survival. Mike's scope of knowledge also includes the continued work on the nursery role of near-shore habitats such as kelp forests and on marine conservation agreements on a global scale. Let the questions begin. This show made possible through the generous support of Habitat for Humanity Tucson

Energy Efficiency: Getting More with Less
Steve is a guest we definitely want to know more about because has he EVER got credibility around such an important issue. Prior to his promotion to executive director in 2001, Steven served as deputy director of the organization and director of ACEEE's Utilities and Buildings programs. He has worked in the energy efficiency field for more than 30 years and has over 100 publications. He has testified many times before Congress on energy efficiency subjects and also testified before multiple state legislatures. And a great deal more. FYI, The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), acts as a catalyst to advance energy efficiency policies, programs, technologies, investments, and behaviors. They believe that the United States can harness the full potential of energy efficiency to achieve greater economic prosperity, energy security, and environmental protection for all its people. Hard for me to think of a more important topic and can hardly wait to hear what yet another outstanding guest has to share. Seeds: The Game!
Nick Heyming
Ready for this? The idea for Seeds the Game was born almost 5 years ago while CEO of Grow Games Interactive and Founder of Seeds The Game, Nick Heyming, was in Peru volunteering with an organization that helped children build community gardens, called Tierra de Nios. He was approached by a grandmother in the community who thanked him for working with the kids but was concerned about children and youth who were not there, that were just eating junk food, disconnecting from their community, and playing video games for the majority of their free time. The kids working in community gardens in Peru were already activated on a deeper level and were committed to being Earth Stewards at an early age. "What about the ones in commercial consumer and video game culture?" she asked. Was there anything Nick could do about it? There was. Please join me to find out just what that "it" has turned out to be. This show brought to you through the generous support of the Chapman Automotive Group.

Organic Rise to the Top
Maria Rodale, Chairman & CEO, Rodale Institute
Maria Rodale is not only an activist in the world of healthy eating, she is a businesswoman who has made promoting the benefits of an organic lifestyle both her personal mission and her business. A bit of background from my research: Maria has pretty much done it all at the Rodale Institute and continues to lead the way. She joined the business in 1987, first working in circulation and direct marketing and eventually leading Rodale's in-house direct marketing agency. In 1998, she served as director of strategy, where she led the strategic review, planning processes, and management changes that refocused the company on publishing healthy, active lifestyles information. She also led the company's Organic Living division, Rodale's first integrated brand division, where she was Editor-in-Chief of Organic Gardening and oversaw all of Rodale's gardening books. She joined the Rodale board in 1991 and was elected Chairman in 2007. I have lots of questions about the magnitude, scope and impact the Rodale Institute has had and continues to have as leaders in the world of organic food - especially with this amazing woman at the helm. Urbanomics Gone Wild
Stephen Ritz is truly indescribable but here's my best shot. He is an educator, an innovator, a social entrepreneur, a keynote speaker and overall ROCK STAR. He believes that we can grow ourselves into new opportunity and academic success. He believes in growing healthy kids, healthy food, and healthy communities. He has changed the face of the South Bronx and is now on a path to change the world. He has helped to create blocks and blocks of community gardens under a major expressway that was once just wasted space. He is about a fair and livable wage for his graduates and he believes in helping some of the most at-risk get to college. He believes in urban farming, urban renewal and he is living proof that all things are possible when it comes to changing lives. I adore him and cannot wait to have him back on the show to find out what he is up to next.  This show made possible due to the generous support of Habitat for Humanity Tucson.

He's got big picture concepts, he really knows what non-technology is and can explain it in laymen's terms and he truly cares about the health of the world in which we live. I have a feeling we are going to be all over the place with this interview and I am already doing my homework.  Intimidation factor? HUGE! Please let me know you ARE going to join me! Dr. Sylvia Earle, Legendary Ocean Researcher
