"Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul."

A Deeper Shade of Green

From where I sit, there is so much bad news out there that I am in a self-declared news blackout for a bit. Russia, the Ukraine, the Gaza Strip, immigration, the Veterans Administration, Climate Change reports, human (mostly children) sex trafficking, the political blame game. Enough already? How's this headline from the BBC: "Global decline of wildlife linked to child slavery." I read every word of the article and, sadly, it all makes sense.

People who are starving prey on their own young. More labor is needed to find food so let's steal or enslave children and use them - right? I read it and wept. If you can handle the truth, here is the link.

So for the time being, I am choosing to focus on the things I can help change, like producing the very best radio shows I possibly can and placing meaningful posts on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram. I am focusing on showing up every day and making a difference for this planet of ours, and all of its inhabitants.

One last very personal share. Here is what I am doing to help sustain my soul during these challenging times. I am keeping this quote from Rumi, the mid-thirteenth century philosopher and scholar, close at hand:

I hope to see you there.

You + Me = Power to the Planet

Are you ready to push the boundaries so more and more people will be engaged with our mission of moving our planet from grave danger to healthy and healing? It's time. Be a change agent.

Encore Show selected by Mrs. Green - Mommy Greenest

Rachel Lincoln- Sarnoff

Her tagline? "We guard the nest of the world." Mommy Greenest is rapidly becoming THE resource for healthier parenting with less judgment. Rachel believes you shouldn't have to be a scientist to raise healthy kids. As the former CEO of Healthy Child Healthy World, former editor of Children magazine and with three children of her own, she's got lots of credibility. Rachel talks bout her book - The Big List of Things That Suck. And I believe you will want to listen in!

The Compelling Case for a Plant-Based Diet

Dr. John McDougall

John A. McDougall is an American Irish physician and author whose philosophy is that degenerative disease can be prevented and treated with a low-fat, whole foods, plant-based/vegan diet - especially one based on starches such as potatoes, rice, and corn - and that excludes all animal foods and added vegetable oils. Passionate? Incredibly. Compelling? Totally. Convincing? Yes - because of the science Dr. McDougall brings to the table. If you have EVER wondered or want to know more about the benefits of a plant-based diet and want to educate yourself, joining us is a "must do."  You will be glad you did. This show sponsored by Goodwill Industries of Southern Arizona.

Time to Bee Smart

Laurie Davies Adams, Executive Director, Pollinator Partnership

The Pollinator Partnership is the largest organization in the world dedicated exclusively to the protection and promotion of pollinators and their ecosystems. Birds, bats, bees, butterflies, beetles, and other small mammals that pollinate plants are responsible for bringing us one out of every three bites of food. They also sustain our ecosystems and produce our natural resources by helping plants reproduce. Without the actions of pollinators agricultural economies, our food supply, and surrounding landscapes would collapse.  Laura Davis Adams has overseen the initial organization and the development of the North American Pollinator Protection Campaign (NAPPC). Have questions for Laura? Email us - PLEASE! Excited about joining us?  I hope so. This show sponsored by The Fairfax Companies. (Note from Mrs. Green - I don't think I have ever had as many requests for a show topic. The public is concerned about our disappearing bees and this show will hopefully answer many of our questions.)

Trash Talk

Alex Fried, Founder & Director, Post-Landfill Action Network (PLAN)

Do you believe that waste is just a logistics problem? Can you even begin to imagine a national movement of student leaders working to solve that problem and build a world where landfills and incinerators are obsolete? Please join me to learn from Alex about a world without waste and why is it within our reach. Be inspired as we learn about a movement of young leaders committed to fixing our broken cycle of consumption and waste. They've got a PLAN and I want to hear it. Generation Just do It: Ocean Cleanup Project

Boyan Slat

Ready for the solution to plastics in our ocean? One that has been proven to be feasible? Join us to hear about how this 19-year-old combines environmentalism, entrepreneur-ism and technology to tackle global issues of sustainability.  He got frustrated while diving in Greece when he saw more plastic bags than fish, and asked himself: "Why can't we clean this up?"  So, on June 3, 2014 the concept he developed with a team of people was determined to be a feasible method to clean almost HALF the plastic from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in just 10 years. This show is about dreamers of the day who make things possible. I cannot wait. This show is sponsored by The Fairfax Companies.

Ingenuity is Ripe in the Vineyards

Paul Novak, WholeVine General Manager

Cold-pressed oils, gluten-free cookies, 16 flours and whole grain cookies made from grapes "scraps" once tossed in the landfill?  Yes. WholeVine offers an entire line of culinary products produced solely from pomace (skins and seeds remaining after grapes are pressed for wine production), a delicious example of full cycle sustainability I discovered at the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Cooking for Solutions Institute this past spring.  I knew I had to share this incredible story with the Mrs. Green's World tribe and so I shall. Please join us.  This show sponsored by Goodwill Industries of Southern Arizona.

Taking Care of Business, People and the Planet

Yalmaz Siddiqui, Senior Director of Environmental Strategy, Office Depot

Office Depot's three environmental aspirations are to "Buy Green," "Be Green" and "Sell Green." How are they doing? They have achieved the widest green product assortment in the office products industry. They have reduced their electricity use by over 20% and have saved at least 21,000 tons of waste from landfills. And they have helped thousands of customers reduce the environmental impact of their businesses. After I heard Mr. Siddiqui present at a higher education sustainability conference, I concluded Office Depot is taking big steps and making a big impact. Join us to decide what you think.  This show sponsored by Chapman Tucson.
