"Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wilderness is a necessity; and that mountain parks and reservations are useful not only as fountains of timber and irrigating rivers, but as fountains of life."

Simple Green

I have always believed that imitation is the highest form of flattery. When I got a newsletter the other day from a great company called Flagler Organics, their simple messages about right action and right relationships really sunk in. They are a series of brief thoughts that make you want to stop what you are doing and ponder them. The New Year always provides us with an opportunity to reflect and these messages made me do just that - so why not share? Let's all have the most consciously lived, sustainable year of our collective lives. Here goes..

Right action:

Do something good...
Take a Walk in Nature
Complete some Piece of Unfinished Business
Clean Something
Help Someone
Don't Waste
Take a Yoga Class

Right relationships:
Be with People You Love
Be with People Who Inspire You
Be Here NOW
Listen Deeply
Dance Well

Food for sustainable thought? I hope so. Would love to hear yours - truly I would.

That Green Hidden Surprise

I know there are those of you who always look for the "if you have read all the way down" and are one of the first five people to respond, you will get a Mrs. Green goodie. Well here 'tis, but there's a twist! I would like to know a topic you would like to hear more about in this newsletter. Food? Toxins in the home? Dangers of plastic? GMOs? How this little piggy went to market? You tell me! Winners will not only get one of Mrs. Green's beautiful ceramic hearts but will be mentioned in the newsletter with my thanks for being in touch.

Meet a Clean Tech Techie

Ron Pernick, Clean Edge Inc.

Before I was Mrs. Green I admit to having little, if any, knowledge about the impact of technology on the environment or what the phrase "clean tech" meant. So... clean technology includes recycling, renewable energy (wind power, solar power, biomass, hydropower, biofuels), information technology, green transportation, electric motors, green chemistry, lighting, greywater and many other appliances that are more energy efficient. It means to create electricity and fuels, with a smaller environmental footprint and minimize pollution. Got it? So how does Ron Pernick fit into this? His company is the world's FIRST research and advisory firm devoted to the clean-tech sector. They work with companies large and small to deliver expert analysis and comprehensive insights to key industry stakeholders. Ron Pernick is an accomplished research, publishing and business development entrepreneur with about three decades of high-tech experiences. Between my questions and his answers, we will all know better so we can do better. This show is sponsored by Chapman Tucson.

Amazon Watch

Leila Salazar-Lpez, Amazon Watch Program

DirectorI wanted to write about this way ahead of time so you can "save the date." In my opinion, we should all be watching the Amazon. My visit there over seven years ago anchored my decision to launch Mrs. Green's world. I learned that each of the 7 billion people on the planet count on the Amazon rainforest to regulate our planet's climate generating a full fifth of the world's oxygen and fresh water. Amazon Watch was founded in 1996 to protect the rainforest and advance the rights of indigenous peoples in the Amazon Basin. Medicine, oxygen, water, food, life - this is what this biological treasure gives to all of us. Amazon Watch works every day to preserve and protect this great life force so critical to our survival. Women & Climate Change: Creating a Global Movement
Osprey Orielle Lake
Osprey is a visionary, a thought leader and a game changer. Author of Uprisings for the Earth and one of the founders of the Women's Earth and Climate Caucus, Orielle convenes people like Jane Goddall and Vandana Shiva to address the issues of climate change, much needed solutions and the important role that women play in making them happen. She has much to share and I know you will want to be a part of this engaging conversation. On a very personal note, Osprey's book touched me to the very core of my being in ways that I still don't even understand. I just know she is an important messenger for connecting us all to Mother Earth and I can't wait to interview her again. This show sponsored by Goodwill Industries of Southern Arizona.

Keep it Real, Keep if Rural
Lorraine Lewandrowski
Lorraine Lewandrowski is a lawyer and a dairy farmer in Herkimer County, New York. She has lots to say about dairy farms, the small farmer, and is happy to share some of her thoughts on why organic might not always be what it's cracked up to be. Here's a quote from an article she wrote called Small Dairies and the Big Apple: "I urge farmers and ranchers not to rely totally on traditional farm organizations to speak for them. Take a few friends and a day to go into the heart of your nearest Big City to speak to 'food movement" groups. Be yourself, talk to people with respect, and find out what is on people's minds. Engage in social media that is fast and easy, like Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook and others." How did I find Lorraine one might ask? She called me out on Twitter. One More Generation (OMG!)
Carter, age 13 and Olivia, age 11
Reading is believing. Talk about hope for the future! One More Generation (OMG) was founded by two elementary students in Fayetteville, GA. The founders Carter and his sister Olivia are both extremely passionate about animals and conservation. They have been adopting Cheetahs in South Africa over the past few years (not what I was doing at age 11 or 13) and when they heard that Cheetahs, along with so many other species were close to extinction, they knew they had to act. So of course they started a nonprofit. Yikes! Their mission? To help educate kids and adults about the plight of endangered species so they can save them for at least One More Generation... and beyond. OMG indeed. Wasted: How America Is Losing Up to 40 Percent of Its Food from Farm to Fork to Landfill
Dana Gunders Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC)
Truth be told, I love Dana Gunders. She is a Staff Scientist at the NRDC and leads their work on reducing food waste. Dana is the author of the very widely distributed "Wasted: How America is Losing Up to 40% of Its Food from Farm to Fork to Landfill." Happy to report that her work has been featured on CNN, CNBC, The New York Times, NPR AND she is a repeat guest on my show. I keep good company! But fear not, Dana is far from a dry scientist with a degree from Stanford. She is brilliant, fun, funny, engaging and spot on. I honestly cannot wait and I hope you can't either. No Food Left Behind
Gary Oppenheimer, Founder, AmpleHarvest.Org
Gary is a CNN Hero, one of Huffington Post's "Greatest Person of the Day" winners, and the list goes on and on. But what Gary is doing now is helping to eliminate hunger and malnutrition in communities all over the country. AmpleHarvest.org connects 40+MILLION Americans with excess food in their garden with local food pantries. Garden by garden, home and community gardeners and other growers are fighting hunger with a core mission of no food left behind and a vision to build a healthier and by extension, a wealthier America. You are not going to believe this one. This show sponsored by Goodwill Industries of Southern Arizona.

Wildlife Doesn't Vote
The NWF is a strong voice for wildlife, dedicated to protecting wildlife and habitat and inspiring the future generation of conservationists. Ready for this? In the early 1900s, lots of people cared about wildlife conservation. Little did they know! Their founder, Ding Darling (really) was wise enough to say, "Wildlife doesn't vote and neither do conservationists." He and others set out on a path to change all that and so they have - big time. This powerful group continues to focus on our present and our future to ensure America's wildlife legacy lives - something very near and dear to my heart. Hope you will join us. This show sponsored by Chapman Tucson.
