DVB At IBC - Visit Us In Hall 1 - Stand D81
At this year's IBC taking place on the 9 - 13 September, DVB will showcase the work that it is undertaking to standardize the provision of high-quality content via satellite more efficiently to all in-home IP devices. It will also demonstrate the market preparation of consumer technology for its groundbreaking DVB-S2X technology.
With new devices such as tablets and smartphones gaining popularity for the consumption of live broadcast TV, DVB is set to offer a technical solution to reach these devices. In a live demo, a DVB-T2 signal will be converted into Internet Protocol utilizing a server integrated in the TV. The signal will then be streamed to IP client devices. The principle can be applied to the entire family of first and second-generation DVB transmission platforms (DVB-T/T2, DVB-S/S2/S2X, DVB-C/C2) and managed IPTV transmissions.
A critical step for the introduction of DVB-S2X for DTH is the availability of cost efficient DVBV-S2X receiver chipsets. Now DVB-S2X chipsets and consumer products are in the prototype phase and it can be expected that they will hit the market soon. This will allow operators to use DVB-S2X also for DTH; most probably for delivery of UHD services. An IBC demo will show the progress the industry has made. In addition upcoming chip set solutions will also support cost efficient broadband delivery via satellite.
There will be the opportunity to learn more about the ongoing development of UHDTV Phase 2 with decisions pending on HDR, HFR and Next Generation Audio. The progress on the Virtual Reality Study Mission will also feature.
A number of DVB Member companies have generously contributed to the IBC demonstrations. They include: ASUS, BBC R&D, Broadcom, Enensys, Newtec, Panasonic, Reycom, Satixfy, SES and Sony.
The DVB stand will be tended by DVB representatives and technology experts available to answer queries and provide information on DVB's wide ranging family of open, interoperable, market driven standards.
The popular "DVB Members Get Together" will once again be taking place during IBC. This year's event is being sponsored by SES, a world-leading satellite operator, providing reliable and secure satellite communications solutions to broadcast, telecom, corporate and government customers, reaching 99% of the world's population.

How TV Brands "Kill It" With Millennials
A recent report from the Video Advertising Bureau finds that despite some thoughts to the contrary, TV reaches more adults aged 18-34 now than at the start of the millennium. While much has been made about millennials' evolving media consumption habits, more millennials continue to watch video on TV, where the vast majority of video consumption takes place, than any other device. Although the smartphone is the highest reaching device among Millennials, TV remains "Queen" of video consumption. It is also important to note that branded TV content, accessed across screens, remains at the center of their universe.
The report reflects a compilation of insights on millennial media consumption habits as they relate to the video ecosystem and TV Brands in particular.
- Millennials spend more time with TV brands online than with any other site across a wide variety of internet genres
- During any given minute, many more millennials are consuming TV content than are checking Facebook, listening to Pandora or watching videos on YouTube
- TV brands offer a breadth of innovative, exciting and edgy ad-supported programming across genres which is unmatched by any other platform or entity
- Millennial-focused TV programs deliver higher audiences and greater engagement than the most popular personality-driven YouTube channels
- TV continually creates moments that transcend the viewing experience and generates enormous social buzz
- Most importantly, TV advertising has constantly shown the ability to create real impact and drive revenues in millennial-driven categories.

ITU Announces Recommendation For High Dynamic Range TV
The ITU has announced its new Recommendation for High Dynamic Range Television that represents a major advance in television broadcasting. High Dynamic Range Television (HDR-TV) brings a feeling of realism, building further on the superior color fidelity of ITU's Ultra-High Definition Television (UHDTV) Recommendation BT.2020. ITU's Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R) has developed the Recommendation in collaboration with experts from the television industry, broadcasting organizations and regulatory institutions in its Study Group 6.
"High Dynamic Range Television represents an important step towards the virtual-reality quality of experience to be delivered by future broadcasting and multimedia systems," said François Rancy, Director of the ITU Radiocommunication Bureau.
The ITU-R UHDTV Recommendation BT.2020, approved in October 2015, represented the continuous evolution of television since it was invented in the 1930s, transforming the dim black and white screen into an ultra-high definition color picture on large flat panel displays.
This latest ITU-R HDR-TV Recommendation BT.2100 brings a further boost to television images, giving viewers an enhanced visual experience with added realism. The HDR-TV Recommendation allows TV programs to take full advantage of the new and much brighter display technologies. HDR-TV can make outdoor sunlit scenes appear brighter and more natural, adding highlights and sparkle. It enhances dimly lit interior and night scenes, revealing more detail in darker areas, giving TV producers the ability to reveal texture and subtle colors that are usually lost with existing Standard Dynamic Range TV.
The HDR-TV Recommendation details two options for producing High Dynamic Range TV images. The Perceptual Quantization (PQ) specification achieves a very wide range of brightness levels using a transfer function that is finely tuned to match the human visual system and the Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) specification which offers a degree of compatibility with legacy displays by more closely matching the previously established television transfer curves. The Recommendation also outlines a simple conversion process between the two HDR-TV options.
The ITU-R Recommendation BT.2100 also allows TV producers to choose from three levels of detail or resolution: HDTV (1920 by 1080), and UHDTV '4K' (3840 by 2160) and '8K' (7680 by 4320) - all of which use the progressive imaging system with extended color gamut and range of frame-rates in ITU's UHDTV Recommendation BT.2020.
