At BroadcastAsia on Stand 5L5-03, DVB will demonstrate the transmission of UHD content over a DVB-S2 signal that includes DVB-CID (Carrier ID) information, identifying the source of the transmission. DVB-CID is a digital satellite transmission system that describes the modulation, channel coding and signaling protocol intended for the identification of the host carrier.

DVB To Participate In Carrier ID Technology Tour

In last month's DVB Scene eNews we gave you a preview of DVB's plans for BroadcastAsia. DVB will also be participating in the Technology Tours hosted by The Satellite Interference Reduction Group (IRG). CommunicAsia run the daily technology-themed tours that bring visitors to key exhibitors featuring relevant products/services for a 10 minute presentation on their technology-specific solutions.

With satellite interference continuing to be a problem for the satellite industry, there are a number of new tools and technologies available to minimize its effect, as well as ways to prevent it occurring in the first place. The interference tour aims to show participants different tools and technologies for combating satellite interference. As well as being led by an expert in interference mitigation, each stand will have an expert on hand to discuss that part of the puzzle in detail. Participants will learn how interference can be resolved, what practical steps they can take, and what new technologies are available to help.

DVB-CID (Carrier ID) specification does a great deal to overcome the issue of Radio Frequency Interference (RFI). It enables operators and users to quickly identify interfering carriers and respond to RFI, to reduce the duration of each event, improve Quality of Service and reduce operating costs. The specification lowers the number of RFI events and releases bandwidth being used to overcome current and ongoing RFI events. The DVB standard for Carrier ID enables the industry to produce interoperable equipment.

The satellite interference guided tours are free of charge. Interested parties should visit the CommunicAsia website to select an available time slot.

HDTV Launches In Germany

The new DVB-T2 HDTV service in Germany, which is scheduled to launch next Tuesday, 31 May, will offer its TV channels under the brand name Freenet TV. Earlier this year Freenet AG took over broadcast infrastructure company Media Broadcast.

The digital terrestrial TV offering will consist of three multiplexes with the public service broadcasters Das Erste and ZDF offering their channels in full HD quality free of charge. Also included in the preliminary program package will be RTL, ProSieben, SAT.1 and VOX in addition to the existing DVB-T program package. While the public channels will be free-to-air, the commercial channels will be encrypted but initially will be available free of charge. In spring 2017, the offering will grow to around 40 channels which will include up to 20 commercial channels that after an additional three-month free trial period, viewers will be charged a monthly mid-single digit euro fee for access.

Receivers branded with the Freenet TV logo have been available from retailers and CI Plus modules will be on sale from the end of May. They can be used to upgrade existing DVB-T2 HDTV sets for reception of the encrypted commercial channels.

Malawi Launches Free-To-Air DVB-T2 Services

Patricia Kaliati, the Malawian Minister of Information, Communications Technology and Civic Education launched free-to-air digital television on April 23 in the city of Mzuzu. The city's seventeen channels have migrated to the digital platform. Mzuzu is the capital of Malawi's Northern Region and is the third largest city with a population of around 1.7 million people.

During the event the minister unveiled the DVB-T2 digital decoder known as "Kiliye Kiliye". In order to promote the sale of the T2 set-top box she announced a reduction in the price to 13,500 Malawi Kwacha (approximately 17 Euros). The reduction will enable Malawians to buy the decoder up until the analog signal switch-off on 30th June, 2016. To further encourage sales, the government instituted a number of mechanisms including the liberalization of the sale and distribution of the "Kiliye Kiliye" digital decoder so that they are readily available within communities.

The southern city of Zomba followed suit on May 6 and has a schedule switch-off date of July 1.

Malawi is among the five countries that have been recognized by the ITU to have migrated to digital in the SADC region joining Mauritius, Tanzania, Namibia and Mozambique.

DVB Satellite Standards To Help Global 4K STB Market Reach USD 3.65 Billion by 2024

Set-Top Box
DVB satellite standards are predicted to help the global 4K set-top box market size to reach USD 3.65 billion by 2024, according to a new report by Grand View Research.

The report states that the increasing demand for UHD 4K video content, surging sales of compatible 4K TVs and display devices is expected to positively shape the Ultra High Definition (UHD) set-top box market's growth prospects.

Content providers have begun offering sharper and immersive video content to their consumers on account of significant breakthroughs in the 4K technology. Large scale penetration of smart TVs has proved to be instrumental in escalating the demand for such sophisticated set-top boxes. Industry vendors have leveraged on providing set-top boxes with enhanced broadcast capabilities on DVB satellite (DVB-S/DVB-S2/DVB-S2X) standards.

An increasing number of UHD content providers is expected to propel industry growth and is presumed to strengthen the industry's growth prospects. However, high initial and up gradation costs, along with high subscription fees for 4K content is expected to challenge the industry growth over the forecast period.

The Asia Pacific 4K set-top box market accounted for over 25% of the global revenue share in 2014 and is presumed to witness significant growth over the forecast period. China and India are expected to incorporate considerable opportunities for regional industry growth, due to the strong presence of UHD set-top box manufacturers.
