Carrier ID Makes A Splash At Satellite 2013
|
|
Satellite, the annual conference and exhibition in Washington is the most relevant event of the satellite community. It is the place where the satellite industry comes together to explore next generation products and technology and also to discuss solutions for tomorrow's with experts from the field. The DVB is one of the technology providers for this industry. The most relevant specification is DVB-S2, which is used not only for DTH broadcast, but also for high speed data links via satellite. In addition, the industry relies heavily on DVBs' interactive satellite solution DVB-RCS2.
The new kid on the block is the DVB-CID (Carrier ID) standard which helps to mitigate the consequences of unintentional interference by providing information about the interferer. This new specification was one of the highlights of the event. In a panel discussion, the CEOs of Eutelsat and Intelsat pointed out how relevant this specification is for their business. In addition, there were several panels devoted to interference where the importance of CID was emphasized. The satellite community was pleased that it took the DVB only one year to finalize this specification.
Another hot topic at Satellite 2013 was Ultra HDTV. The satellite industry regards this new technology as a major driver of its future business. The market players are of course aware that inexpensive terminals, the new video scheme, HEVC, and the availability of content are key to a successful market introduction. DVB is supporting the market by providing the necessary standards to deliver UHDTV content via satellite.
Considering the relevance of DVB-S2, DVB has started to work on a new version of this specification with DVB-S2 Extensions. For traditional DTH, the performance improvement will be about 15%, for professional applications the performance increase can be up to 40%. In a panel discussion, a team of experts representing the European manufacturers Newtec and Teamcast, the worldwide satellite operator SES, the US public broadcaster PBS and the Department of Defense together with the DVB Executive Director, Peter Siebert, discussed the relevance of this new specification. According to the current time schedule, the introduction of this new specification will come at the same time as HEVC, the new video coding standard. This gives an excellent window of opportunity to introduce both technologies together in the market. There was general consensus that the industry is desperately waiting for this new specification.

Botswana's Move To Digital Draws Sharp Criticism
|
|
The Southern African Digital Broadcasting Association (SADIBA),the region's broadcasting industry body has criticized the recent decision by Botswana to adopt the Japanese standard for digital terrestrial television. The criticisms appeared in the South African online news service TECH CENTRAL earlier this month after the news was reported in Botswana's Daily News newspaper.
The move by Botswana came as a surprise as most other nations in the region have decided to adopt DVB-T2. The Republic of South Africa, which had committed itself to the European standard, vacillated a few years ago under intense lobbying by Japan and Brazil. Brazil adopted a variation of the ISDB-T standard. However, after nine months of debate and independent testing, and a change in communications minister, the country adopted DVB-T2.
Botswana will be the only country deploying ISDB-T in an 8 MHz channel bandwidth. Professional equipment for this configuration is not available and it will be difficult to achieve economy of scale for receivers.
The statement from SADIBA outlines how the decision will "burden the citizens of Botswana with unnecessary costs, reduce the prospect of costs dropping in future, and reduce the benefits possible from the transition to digital". It goes on to say that "it sets a country up for a wasteful second transition to a newer technology in future and that DVB-T2 undisputedly delivers 50% more capacity than ISDB-T and is unrivaled in its flexibility and features by first-generation standards".
The full SADIBA statement can be read here.

DVB World 2013 A Roaring Success
|
|
We promised that it would be bigger and better than last year and we delivered. This year's DVB World conference in Madrid was an overwhelming success with record attendance. With the theme of 'Beyond the Second Generation, Beyond the Second Screen', the leading international experts came together to discuss the current situation and future prospects of the digital standards to delegates that gathered from around the globe.
The keynote speech was delivered by Lieven Vermaele, Director of Technology and Innovation at the EBU, with the helping hand of David Wood, Chair of DVB-3DTV Commercial Module and Chair of DVB-UHDTV Commercial Module. With David asking the questions, Lieven gave his vision of the future media landscape and the developing trends, which essentially is about the spreading of media availability to a range of devices - fixed, portable, and mobile, for a range of different viewing contexts that roughly correspond to fixed large displays, second screens, and on-the-move devices.
He argued that a fundamental problem is that in order to deliver media at high quality, network operators need to invest more in infrastructure. The problem is seeing where this money may come from to pay for it. It can only come from the consumer, who may in the end be unwilling to pay more for content.
He went on to say that while policymakers have been focusing on broadband delivery, there will always be an important role for broadcast technologies. In fact, the key to Europe's digital media agenda in future will be the use of broadcast and broadband working together to ensure that content and services are delivered efficiently and cost-effectively - and creating a win-win situation for all.
The event started with the packed Pre-conference Masterclass: 'The Emerging H.265/MPEG High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) Standard', which was hosted by the two experts in this field, Thomas Wiegand and Benjamin Bross (HHI).
Other speakers participating in DVB World 2013 came from organizations such as ITU, RTVE, TU Braunschweig, SES, IHS Screen Digest, ZDF, Sky Germany, Hispasat, Octoshape, Eurovision/EBU, Telefonica, Global IP, Sony, NDS/Cisco, SNL Kagan, Ericsson, Dolby and many more.
The DVB wishes to thank all the Sponsors, Media Partners and Exhibitors for their great support in making DVB World 2013 one of the best to date.
If you missed out on this year's event you can still visit David Wood's blog which gives a blow by blow account of the conference by clicking here.
The dates and location for next year's event have yet to be announced, so watch this space.

DVB Gets Its Turn To Shine In El Salvador
|
|
In the last issue of DVB SCENE eNews we reported that El Salvador's regulator, SIGET (La Superintendencia General de Electricidad y Telecomunicaciones), invited DVB to the city of San Salvador to address the working group on the features, benefits and added values to be achieved in choosing DVB digital television standards. On March 5, DVB representative Julian Sesea was in attendance at the city's Crowne Plaza hotel to present to an audience of more than 30 that included official Committee Members and stakeholders. He also had the opportunity to meet with the President of SIGET after the session to highlight the benefits of DVB technologies.
This was the third session in SIGET's process of discussing the available standards for digital television. A Japanese delegation briefed the committee in mid-January and the ATSC briefed in mid-February.
SIGET is now planning to carry out tests on the competing standards. DVB Members are invited to participate in these tests to demonstrate DVB-T2 in El Salvador. In addition, there might be the possibility to use the El Salvador tests as a platform to demonstrate the T2 system to the whole of Latin America. SIGET has asked for assistance from DVB and were advised that it will be essential to include DVB-T2 in the tests where better performance would be clearly noted.
The country plans to complete its digital switchover by 31 December 2018.
