DVB's Satellite Carrier ID Features at WBU-ISOG Forum
On November 26th and 27th, the EBU Headquarters in Geneva hosted the World Broadcasting Union's International Satellite Operator Group (WBU-ISOG) Forum. The agenda incorporated a wide variety of issues, many of them new, including: UHDTV 4K and 8K, HEVC Compression, DSNG Parameters, Updates on International Networks, Winning the Interference War and a full Satellite Operators Panel.
DVB's Executive Director, Peter Siebert participated in the panel session on Carried ID. In this session, the issue of unintentional interference into satellite links, caused for example, by malfunctioning equipment or operational errors, was addressed. Representatives from the BBC and SES pointed out that this is a real challenge when operating a satellite link. To solve this problem the relevant stakeholders came together in DVB and initiated the work on Carrier ID. The current approach consists of a signal containing all the necessary information about the uplink and its operator. The signal is added as a spread spectrum sequence to the actual signal without any degradation of the original transmission.
The specification is being drafted in the DVB TM-S2 group with Vittoria Mignone (RAI) as rapporteur. The work is progressing at a steady pace and it is anticipated that the specification will be published in early March 2013 as a DVB BlueBook, and soon thereafter as an ETSI Technical Specification. Considering the relevance of this standard for the wider satellite community, it was suggested that the document should also become an ITU-R Recommendation. Furthermore, both the US and UK regulators, the FCC and OFCOM are working on requirements for satellite uplinks and there was common agreement that both organizations should refer to the DVB Carrier ID document. The participants of the WBU/ISOG forum expressed their satisfaction about the smooth and efficient process for Carrier ID in DVB.
The World Broadcasting Unions (WBU) is the coordinating body for broadcasting unions that represent broadcaster networks across the globe. It was established in 1992 as a coordinating body at the international broadcasting level. Since then, the WBU has provided global solutions on key issues for its member unions.
The mission of the World Broadcasting Unions' International Satellite Operations Group (WBU-ISOG) is: to identify, evaluate, and implement solutions for all operational matters associated with transmission (by satellite or any other means) of video, audio, and broadcast-related data material from sites of news, sports, special events and entertainment, and to work with all international groups, institutions, organizations and appropriate bodies to achieve these solutions.

Italy Anticipates Demand For DVB-T2
In anticipation of the future demand for DVB-T2 recievers, the association for the promotion of digital terrestrial TV in Italy, DGTVi, is planning to launch two new stickers to help identify products equipped with the new technology. Gold and Silver stickers are already in use by the Italian TV industry to denote 'Connected' and 'Top-Up' services respectively. The new Gold and Silver T2 stickers will be used to identify the different types of DVB-T2 recievers.
Following the launch of DVB-T2 by commercial broadcaster Europa 7 in 2010, the Italian government decided earlier this year that all all DTT tuners sold in Italy from 2015 onwards must include the DVB-T2 standard, both for set-top boxes and for IDTVs.

DVB in conjunction with ABU, and Doordarshan India are hosting a DVB-T2 Technology Implementation Workshop designed for the Indian TV broadcasters and those planning to take up TV broadcasting in general, and in particular planning to implement DVB-T2 technology. The event is to take place in New Delhi on 4 - 6 December. The main objective is to impact knowledge and expertise to these broadcasters on implementation aspects of DVB-T2, as against theoretical system description.
DVB-T2 is a rather complex subject and its complexity is enhanced in terms of implementation. The event will empower broadcasters in India and others in the region to closely look at the implementation issues of DVB-T2 technologies. It will help to clarify the choices that should be made in terms of configuration and frequency planning, equipment planning and the network. The workshop will provide participants with enough information so that they can take informed decisions on the system / parameter configuration and implementation aspects of the technology which has been selected for take up in India. The three-day workshop will provide an excellent opportunity to hear from T2 experts discussing the system, its parameters, its implementation, results of the trials and also implementation aspects specifically related to India.
