Nana's Letter
With Memorial Day Weekend officially behind us, we can finally say summer is here!
June is filled with schools getting out, summer vacations beginning and of course, gearing up for the 4th of July! It might only be June, but July will be here quickly and visit requests for that holiday should be made as soon as possible!
Nana's has already done a lot in the early summer months. We volunteered at Animal Care and Control and fell in love with their programs, gained a better appreciation for all they do in the community, and of course, had a blast loving on the sweet pets in their care! Check out pictures and a full account of our volunteering experience on our blog.
And last but most certainly not least...we launched an online pet store dedicated to cat and dog products that will make your pet's life happier, healthier, safer and more enjoyable.
This newsletter contains several important reminders, updates, new classes & events and very important summer safety tips for the hot weekends ahead and for the upcoming 4th of July.
Please take a moment to scroll through the newsletter, get your visit requests made and...enjoy the beautiful summer weather with your pets!
Woofs, Meows and the Warmest Regards,
Linda

If you follow me on Facebook you already know how much I advocate for summer heat safety when it comes to our cats and dogs. But you can never be reminded enough about the dangers of heat exhaustion and dehydration. Couple that with the upcoming fireworks displays throughout the city in the next month and our responsibility as pet parents gets pretty big!
When it comes to heat:
- Flat faced or brachycephalic cats (Himalayan and Persian) and dogs (bulldogs, boxers, Boston terriers) are more prone to heat exhaustion due to abnormalities in their upper airway causing increased airway resistance, which increases the effort required to inhale. When they get over heated, breathing becomes even more labored and heat exhaustion sets in quicker.
- Dogs do not possess the ability like humans to seek out shade or water when hot. Just leaving them in the yard where there is shade is simply not enough. Leaving a small pool of water for your pup to splash around in and stay cool is important, but you need to be out there to get them in the pool.
- Always monitor your outdoor pet's water intake during hot summer months and make sure you have multiple water stations set up.
- NEVER EVER leave your cat or dog in the car. Even with the windows down, even parked in the shade. On an 80° day your car can reach 99° within ten minutes and 114° within 30 minutes. Do not bring your dog along on errands unless they are pet friendly businesses where you can bring your pup inside.
- Bring a water bottle along on walks for your pooch. Even if it is just a walk around the neighborhood. Whenever you get hot, sweat starts to seep and you become aware of the beating sun, your dog is feeling the same thing, except he is also wearing a fur coat. Bring water to keep him hydrated and if your pup becomes slow, lagging behind and wants to stop let him sit in the shade for a few minutes before continuing. If you need a water bottle, check out the H2O 4K9 Series.
When it comes to July 4th Weekend
Be proactive in preparing your sensitive animals for the loud fireworks display.

Snakes the Time
In honor of the Copperhead living in the bushes around my office, I figured snakes the time to talk about snakes -alright I know...all bad wordplay aside, snakes are a serious concern. Living in a region of the US that has several varieties of venomous snakes, I am always on the look out for slithering neighbors around my house, office and often on the walking trail. But being a pet mother and pet safety instructor I am always watching. I can understand what a snake is but our pups are genuinely curious, learning by touching, sniffing, licking and do not always understand when they could be in danger.
The most lethal aspect about a venomous snake is not that they can inject you with poisonous venom, instead it is the fact they are often hidden. Hiding away in the yard clippings for the compost, seeking refuge in the wood pile, camping out in the cool shade of the bushes near the deck or wandering their way through the border grass and ivy so often used for landscaping. None of these places make their long moving bodies visible. Worst part? These are places we reach, step, move and touch without looking. They are also places of great interest to the sniffing, licking, touching, curious pups we parent. Read More
