Letter

Here we are well into fall and football season, watching for the leaves to turn,  preparing for Halloween and thinking about Thanksgiving and the holidays!!! It seems that everything is just going faster and faster!

Please take a moment to look at our newsletter for the important reminders regarding your pet's safety over the upcoming holidays and reminders about events and classes that are coming up that you may want to attend.  We are adding all sorts of pet safety educational classes over the weeks and months ahead, so be sure to check back to see if you are interested in any of the classes offered.

Everyone at Nana's is very busy preparing for some really fun fall pet shows and they are listed below!  This coming Saturday is Barktoberfest!  The annual sheep herding trials at Rural Hill are always a favorite for the entire family!  Try to get up to Huntersville for this event!  We will have lots of great products available for you to purchase for your pets and for early gift shopping!  I will be doing pet CPR demos throughout the day at both shows!

Nana's will be back at the Southern Christmas Show again this year with TWO booths and in the same location, near the strudel!  We have lots of great new products that you and your pets are going to love!  See below for additional information about the Southern Christmas Show!

As always, we thank you for sharing your pets with us!  We all truly love what we do!

                                             Warmest woofs and meows,

                                         Nana and Sophie

Please be sure that your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors have new batteries in them before leaving to go out of town. The chirping from a weak battery is upsetting to many pets and can easily be avoided if you replace your batteries before you leave for your trip.

When house fires start, only working smoke alarms provide the critical early warning needed to save human and fur lives and minimize property damage. Seven people die each day in the U.S. in home fires. A lot of those homes had smoke alarms, but someone forgot to change the batteries or the batteries had been inserted incorrectly. So please change the batteries at least twice a year - spring and fall - and while you've got your smoke alarm down, make sure it still works. Test it. Smoke alarms have a relatively short lifespan and those you installed a decade ago should be upgraded.

Fall/Autumn
What It Means for Your Pets

Fall is exciting. Leaves change colors, our weather is cooler and football season begins. But did you know that fall can be a dangerous time of year for your pets?

* Snakes are still out even though they may be getting ready for hibernation. Always be alert when walking your dogs especially on hiking trails. Educate yourself about indigenous snakes and what to do if your dog is bitten by a venomous snake.

* Mushrooms may seem harmless but there are some varieties that are deadly to your pets. Always err on the cautious side and keep your pets away from all mushrooms while outside. Vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, excessive drooling and weakness are all signs of mushroom poisoning. Seek immediate emergency veterinary care if your pet shows any sign of these symptoms.

* If your pet gets a lot of activity while the temperatures are dropping, you may want to increase their food intake. It takes more energy to stay warm when playing and exercising outdoors in the cooler temperatures. Our active pets rapidly burn calories and could benefit from a higher calorie allowance.

* Rodenticides, what we know as rat poison, are used more frequently in cooler weather to eliminate unwanted rodents. Pet owners need to be extremely careful with rodenticides because if your pet ingests these products the results can be deadly. Symptoms of rodenticide poisoning include lethargy, pale gums, vomiting, coughing and unusual bleeding. Seek immediate emergency veterinary care if poisoning is suspected.

Violet

Get ready to fall in love with Violet! She is a playful love bug who enjoys car rides, walks, and learning new tricks. She gets along great with the male and female Danes in her foster home and adores the skin kids in the house. She is house-broken and trustworthy in the house; she looks to the other dogs often for direction.

Violet is seven years old, but no one has told her! She is full of energy & loves new adventures. She is not skittish or easily startled and can handle a bit of chaos in the house. Violet is working on her leash manners and learning how to greet other dogs nicely, instead of rushing to be their new best friend. Violet is also good with cats! She is going to be a wonderful addition for her new family!

Great Dane Friends of Ruff Love was started by a group of volunteers dedicated to saving Danes and other dogs, especially one's that may be passed up by other rescues due to special needs. We are an extension of Ruff Love Rescue, a 501 c (3) non profit based in Thomasville NC.
