Why YOU Should Volunteer Today!
Written by Carrie B. Rosen (Cozen O'Connor). Carrie is a Child Advocates Volunteer Attorney, a member of the Volunteer Committee, and a 2013 Distinguished Advocate.
Imagine you are 6 years old. It's the middle of the winter and you are cold and hungry. The heat has been turned off in your house and there is little food in the fridge. You and your 10 year old sister do the best you can to find food for dinner. Suddenly, several strange adults arrive and take you away from your home. You have no idea what is happening. All you know is that you have been taken from your home, separated from your sister and sent to a strange place - a foster home. You are surrounded by strange adults and children. You have no idea when you will see your mom or sister or when you can go home again.
Unfortunately, this situation is all too real for most of our clients. Most suffer from neglect or abuse, either at the hands of their parents, siblings or other caretakers in their lives. Many are removed from their homes and put into the foster care system - some for weeks, some for months and some for years. There is little stability in their lives. They may be bounced from foster home to foster home, school to school. Many have unmet medical or behavioral needs. As a volunteer child advocate, you can be a source of stability and guidance for these children. You can advocate for these children to receive proper medical care, social services, behavioral health and an education. You can make a difference in their lives.
Help make a difference. Help change the story. Become a volunteer child advocate. Attending the Support Center for Child Advocate's April 30 training session is the first step to becoming a volunteer child advocate attorney.
