Meet The Staff: Jodi Schatz

Jodi Schatz is the Director of Intake and Pro-Bono Services at

Child Advocates. Before joining the Child Advocates staff in 1999, Jodi was a staff attorney at Women Against Abuse and the Homeless Advocacy Project. Prior to Law School, she worked with children at a psychiatric hospital. After seeing the children's involvement in the legal system, Jodi decided to enroll at Temple University's Beasley School of Law with the ultimate goal of becoming an advocate for abused and neglected children.

As the Director of Intake and Pro-Bono Services, Jodi accepts case appointments and assigns a Child Advocates staff member and a volunteer attorney to each case. She recruits and trains the volunteer attorneys that work with Child Advocates, acting as logistical support for them throughout the duration of the case. Jodi says that her favorite part about working at Child Advocates is "seeing change in both the life of a child and the volunteer lawyer advocating for the child."

When not working, Jodi enjoys traveling, hiking in the woods, spending quality time with her family and reading.  She recently returned from an incredible and relaxing trip to Puerto Rico!

While Jodi works with up to 300 volunteers at a time, there is always a need for more Child Advocate volunteer attorneys. In fact, right now we are experiencing a shortage of volunteer attorneys and your help is needed!  Join our April 30th Volunteer training (more information below) or contact Jodi to accept a case if you are already a trained volunteer. She can be reached via email or by calling 267-546-9228.

Why YOU Should Be A Child Advocate Volunteer Lawyer!!

Enjoy this great video created by our friend Donald Beaver of Sprout on why Child Advocates volunteer attorneys are so critical to our work.

This April, Child Advocates will be hosting three trainings for new and current volunteer attorneys. The trainings will help attorneys better serve their clients and act as advocates for Philadelphia's abused and neglected children.

On April 1st, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Child Advocates will present  "Dependency Law Update - A Review of Significant Appellate Decisions." This training is for all current Child Advocates volunteer attorneys and will address significant cases and decisions affecting family law and child advocacy that have occurred in the past year. The training will take place at the Support Center for Child Advocates, and provides 2.0 Substantive CLE credits. To register for this training, click HERE!

On April 24th, we will offer "Vicarious Trauma and Burn Out: Supportive Strategies for Working With Clients In Crisis." Any pro bono attorney working in Philadelphia is encouraged to attend to learn more about how to manage working with clients who have experienced trauma. Registration details will be available on our website soon.

On April 30th, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., "How to Handle a Child Abuse Case" Volunteer Training will be held at the Philadelphia Bar Institute CLE Conference Center at the Wanamaker Building. This training is for prospective volunteer attorneys who want to know more about working with Child Advocates and any attorney seeking to hone their skills in family law and learn best practices and the current law of representing child clients. Training attendees will also receive 6.0 CLE credits. To register, click HERE!
