Happy New Year!
We are proud to bring you this first edition of the GoElizabeth e-newsletter - your online source for everything Elizabeth. In 1664, a group of English colonists founded "Elizabethtown" on the grounds of what is now the First Presbyterian Church of Elizabeth. October 2014 not only marks the 350th anniversary of our state and region, but a celebration of our history, culture and unique identity. Today, the City of Elizabeth is a vibrant, ethnically-diverse community with a thriving modern infrastructure and keen awareness of its colonial heritage. As we move closer to 350, we're setting out to showcase the people and places that make Elizabeth great. We'll keep you updated on the latest Elizabeth news and events, spotlight Elizabeth neighborhoods, and recognize outstanding community service. And oh yeah, you may even find yourself winning a shopping spree to The Outlet Collection | Jersey Gardens through one of our monthly contests. Show your Jersey pride and GoElizabeth! |
Design a logo for a chance to win prizes like a $500 gift card to PC Richard or an 8GB iPod Touch. Be a part of history. Contest is open to students in college and grades 1-12. Deadline is January 15. Click here to enter >>

This Month in Elizabeth History...
Jan. 9, 1861: Elizabeth resident Cap. John McGowen steers his merchant steamer toward Fort Sumter to resupply Union troops. With U.S. flags prominently displayed, McGowen's ship draws cannon fire from Morris Island and its secessionist cadets from The Citadel. Historians consider this exchange to be the opening shots of the Civil War, even though war had not been officially declared. |
