November 18 - December 18
Celebrate the season in the most iconic of Chicago settings. Topping Chicago's holiday wish list is the 103rd Annual Christmas Tree Lighting on November 18 at 6pm. Earlier the same day just steps from the tree, the McCormick Tribune ice rink (open through March 5, weather permitting) and the Santa House (open weekends and Thanksgiving through December 18) will open for visitors. And on Friday evenings, November 25 to December 16, local choral groups will lead holiday favorites in concert singalongs. More information at cityofchicago.org/holiday

2017 is the Year of Public Art in Chicago
Mayor Rahm Emanuel and DCASE have declared 2017 as the "Year of Public Art" in Chicago with a new 50x50 Neighborhood Arts Project, the creation of a Public Art Youth Corps, a new Public Art Festival, exhibitions, performances, tours and more. The citywide celebration commemorates the 50th anniversary of two of our most seminal public artworks-the Picasso in Daley Plaza and the Wall of Respect which once stood at 43rd Street and Langley Avenue on the South Side-and highlights the important role that public art has played in Chicago's history. DCASE Announces Filmmaker in Residence: Daniel Nearing
The Chicago Film Office at DCASE has announced that local Chicago filmmaker Daniel Nearing is the inaugural Independent Film Initiative (IFI) Filmmaker in Residence. Nearing was selected for both his filmmaking experience and his commitment to sharing Chicago stories through independent film. As part of the year-long residency, he will film his project Sister Carrie - the third and final installment of a Chicago trilogy directed by Nearing and an adaptation of the landmark feminist Chicago novel of the same name. The Independent Film Initiative - a first-of-its-kind program from the Chicago Film Office - is designed to attract, retain, promote and provide career-enhancing opportunities for local film industry professionals and media makers. The program aims to grow the number of locally-produced independent features, documentaries, short films and web series and to make Chicago a place where films and series are not only made but where they are made by Chicagoans.
