In the first major American exhibition tour, Theo Jansen's wholly distinctive kinetic creations blur the lines of art, engineering, science and performance. Celebrating the thrill of the Strandbeest's locomotion as well as the processes that have driven their evolutionary development, the sculptures are accompanied by artist drawings, videos, daily demonstrations of the Strandbeests' movements, a display of "fossils" as well as photography by Lena Herzog. Opening weekend activities include a preview with the artist on Friday, Feb. 5, a STEAM Family Day on Saturday, Feb. 6, and an afternoon conversation between Theo Jansen and Chicago Humanities Festival's emeritus artistic director Lawrence Weschler on Sun, Feb. 7. Clarke House Museum Tours are Now Free
The Clarke House Museum (1827 S. Indiana Ave.) is now offering FREE public tours of Chicago's oldest house on Wednesdays, Thursdays & Fridays at 1pm & 3pm. Learn about what life was like for a family in Chicago during the city's formative years before the Civil War, when much of the area was still undeveloped prairie. Built in 1836, the house has survived multiple fires, been moved twice, and is now located in the Chicago Women's Park in the Prairie Avenue Historic District.
