SHIFT
SHIFT: A New Media Exhibit by Luftwerk

Stefan Sagmeister's The Happy Show asks, "Is it possible to train your mind to be happy - or at least, happier? "You'll have until September 23 to learn the answer. And just across the Street at Expo 72 (72 E. Randolph St.), City Works: Provocation for Chicago's Future, previously shown at the 13th International Architecture Biennale in Venice (2012), is open through September 29.

The Michigan Avenue Galleries will feature three new artists beginning September 14 with opening receptions September 13 during the Fall Open House.

Ken Ellis: Gathering is on display through December 29, depicting historical flashpoints from African and Native American experience. Using his quilts as a touchstone for education, awareness and homage, we travel through time and space and construct a narrative nurtured by thread.

Chicago-based artist Matthew Groves presents Universal Statuary through January 5. The artist's figurative ceramic sculptures show a direct reference to the Chicago corporation that once employed him.

And Mike Andrews presents Not Your Grandma's Future Juice Bar through January 5 with a series of sculptures and tapestries that occupies the gallery space, demanding the viewer's attention. Andrews uses the format of the tapestry because he feels it is an ideal information delivery system that simultaneously functions as object and image.

On the second floor of the Chicago Cultural Center, the Chicago Rooms gallery hosts SHIFT: A New Media Exhibit by Luftwerk open September 14 through January 5. Chicago-based collaborative Luftwerk continues to examine the relationship between light and form with Shift, their latest new media installation. Shift will activate, confuse and delight the senses by immersing viewers in a heightened experience of sight, color and sound.

Theater and Dance Highlights

The Sideshow Theatre Company production of 9 Circles is the story of Private Daniel Reeves who was never good at anything but being in the army. Now, he stands accused of a horrific war crime, and as he awaits his day of judgment a surreal progression of lawyers, clergy and his own memories carry him deeper and deeper into his crimes. Inspired by a true story, 9 Circles is award-winning playwright Bill Cain's searingly-relevant and razor-sharp look at the search for life in a place that seems made to extinguish it. To purchase tickets visit sideshowtheatre.org.

Enjoy Double The Beethoven On September 15 With A Performance By The International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) And A Beethoven Festival Concert

International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE)

Loops and Variations: International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE)
On Sunday, September 15 at

3pm in Preston Bradley Hall at the Chicago Cultural Center, ICE meets the DCASE Loops and Variations series for a one-of-a-kind performance of Beethoven's Septet.  In January 2013, ICE presented a thrilling free concert at the Chicago Cultural Center, pairing works of composer/improviser/computer music pioneer George Lewis with Schubert's Octet. Lewis' new work for ICE begins where last year's concert left off, creating his own pairing of music for ICE's soloists with Beethoven's Septet. This concert, co-produced in conjunction with the International Beethoven Project, features ICE's musical mentor and artist-in-residence Steven Schick as guest percussionist. The concert kicks off a number of Loops and Variations dates (the popular Millennium Park summer series that mixes contemporary classical music with electronica) at the Chicago Cultural Center. This event is also the first in a new initiative, OpenICE, presenting free contemporary music concerts throughout the city. The Chicago Cultural Center will host OpenICE on a bi-monthly basis through the 2013 season.

International Beethoven Festival Concert

Before ICE on September 15, The International Beethoven Project presents a vocal/piano performance featuring soprano Arianna Zukerman and pianists George Lepauw and Steven Spooner. The concert begins at 12:30pm in the Chicago Cultural Center's Claudia Cassidy Theater and is one of 100 events presented during the nine-day Beethoven Festival: LOVE 2013.
