Screening and Talk: SLAVERY BY ANOTHER NAME with Director Sam Pollard
SLAVERY BY ANOTHER NAME is a fascinating 90 minute documentary that challenges the belief that slavery ended with Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. The film recounts how in the years following the Civil War, insidious new forms of forced labor emerged in the American South, keeping hundreds of thousands of African Americans in bondage, trapping them in a brutal system that would persist until the onset of World War II. Award winning director Sam Pollard, also a highly acclaimed editor, will talk about the making of SLAVERY BY ANOTHER NAME, and his approach to documentary production. Cosponsored by: Documentary Forum@CCNY, Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership, with the Media and Communication Arts Department, Black Studies Program and the Black Documentary Collective.

NYC's First Home Video Day!  Free Event!

Third World Newsreel, DCTV, and the Activist Archivists will host the first New York City Home Video Day to highlight the importance of saving VHS and miniDV memories. Families, community groups, individuals and artists are being asked to bring their VHS and miniDV tapes - old, but perhaps personally important videos - to share them and learn how to save these images. This free event is open to all - and refreshments are being provided. Archivists will be on hand to inspect tapes and advise on their preserving the content. Throughout the day, local community groups and artists will show some of the work from their own collections, alongside the home videos of all those willing to participate. Inspired by Home Movie Day and Thomas Allen Harris' Digital Diaspora Family Reunion, this event is also meant to highlight the importance of family and community media images as historical documents for future generations.

Master Class and Film Screening: Jason DaSilva and WHEN I WALK

In 2006, 25-year-old Jason DaSilva was on vacation at the beach with family when suddenly, he fell down and couldn't get back up. His legs had stopped working; his disease could no longer be ignored.  Just a few months earlier doctors had told him that he had multiple sclerosis, which could lead to loss of vision and muscle control, as well as a myriad of other complications. Jason tried exercise to help cope, but the problem only worsened. After his dispiriting fall on the beach, he turned to his Mom, who reminded him that, despite his disease, he was still a fortunate kid who had the opportunity to pursue the things he loved most: art and filmmaking. Jason picked up the camera, turned it on his declining body, and set out on a worldwide journey in search of healing, self-discovery, and love.  An emotional documentary filled with unexpected moments of humor and joy, WHEN I WALK is a life-affirming film driven by a young man's determination to survive-and to make sense of a devastating disease through the art of cinema.
