Soul Food Junkies and Byron Hurt at City College (Screening presented as part of TWN's Wednesday Night Workshops)
This documentary follows Byron Hurt's journey to learn more about the African American cuisine known as soul food. Baffled by his dad's unwillingness to change his traditional soul food diet in the face of a health crisis, Hurt sets out to learn more about this rich culinary tradition and its relevance to black cultural identity. In a film that looks at history, class, racism, health, food access, culture and family, Soul Food Junkies uses humor and heart to address this cuisine and culture. The screening will be followed by a talk with the award-winning filmmaker, Byron Hurt, a TWN workshop alum, on the making of this film. Byron will talk about the journey of his film production, how he managed to get it produced and the impact it has had on his own life and family. Cosponsored with the Media and Communication Arts Department and the Colin Colin L. Powell Center for Leadership and Service at City College, the Medical Career Success Program-Black Male Initiative at the Sophie Davis School of Bio-Medical Education at CCNY, and the Black Documentary Collective. This event is free, but RSVP required, seating is very limited!
