Mountain's Corky Laing to Record on Nantucket this Weekend
Josh Gray

The band Mountain will always be remembered as one of the pioneers of hard rock and heavy metal in the United States. Nantucket has been called home to not just one, but two of its members through the years. One of the key early members, Corky Laing, is one of those long-time residents and will return to Nantucket this weekend to record at the Ferrantella family's Garden Rock Studios.

"The idea to record at Garden Rock Studios just came together in the last week or 10 days," said Nick Ferrantella, a well-known Nantucket businessman and one-time road manager and producer for Mountain as well as the band Foreigner. "We talked and thought it would be great to get together again for a couple of days in the studio after so long."

With classics like "Mississippi Queen" and "Nantucket Sleighride" highlighting the band's catalogue, Laing is part of Mountain's three remaining members. His visit to Nantucket, however, is with the band K2, a group that pays tribute to the music of Mountain's heyday. Fresh off a performance with K2 at Boston's Hard Rock Cafe -- a special evening that honored Laing, Mountain's drummer, by adding the cowbell from his drum kit to their rock n' roll memorabilia collection -- Laing and the band arrived on Nantucket Friday to record several songs that he's written as part of a recent rock opera, as well as reimagine some of the classic Mountain songs of the past.

"I can't believe it, but it's the 40th anniversary of the cow bell," said Laing by phone before the Thursday night event. The cow bell may be more familiar to recent generations as the centerpiece of Will Ferrell's Saturday Night Live spoof of Blue Oyster Cult's "(Don't Fear) the Reaper", but those familiar with 1970s rock may remember the cowbell as the iconic lead-in to "Mississippi Queen". I'm proud to say it's worth something after 40 years, considering I bought it way back for $2.50 Canadian."

Laing found himself playing with K2, which is comprised of himself on drums and vocals, Peter Baron on guitar, sitar and lead vocals, Joe Venti on bass and vocals and Ken Sidotti on keyboards and vocals, after hearing about what they were doing and then becoming impressed by the level of execution they brought reviving the old hits. Both Baron and Venti are alumni of the Leslie West Band, a one-time iteration of Mountain during one of their several hiatuses.

"K2 was formed last summer and they had called me at some point and asked me to sit in," added Laing. "I told them I was only in if the guys could play the songs as they were originally recorded and I have to tell you they were right on. It's been an honor to play these songs again and it's been fun to go back and relearn my parts."

On and off close friends for those 40 years, Ferrantella and Laing first met on Nantucket in 1967 at the Thirty Acres Night Club, an establishment fondly remembered by many who were around at the time.

"Nick and I go way back," said Laing. "He was an aspiring drummer himself and David Perry (Mountain, 1973-74) played guitar in his band at the time."

Laing, who called Nantucket home from 1970-1982, also counts actor and former Theatre Workshop of Nantucket Artistic Director John Shea still among his close friends as well, and says he gets back to the island as often as possible, when he's not performing on the road or at home in Greenpoint, Long Island, N.Y.

He said he, the Ferrantellas and K2 have no real agenda for their weekend long recording session, but just hope to have a lot of fun and finally have an opportunity to work with Nick's son, island musician and producer Victor Ferrantella

Vic Ferrantella in the Garden Rock Studios

"It's an exciting moment for Garden Rock Studios and myself," said the younger Farrentella. "I grew up listening to Corky play drums for Mountain. As a kid I never appreciated the power and sound that came from Corky's drumming. To me Corky has always been like a long lost uncle that I see every few years, full of funny stories about my dad. I'm excited and honored to now be a part of his amazing musical journey."

The gathering also coincidentally coincides with Vic's nomination for The 2014 New England Music Awards for Producer of the Year, an accomplishment they all plan to celebrate together.

"I'm very proud of Victor's nomination and I'm looking forward to this session with him and excited to watch his production and engineering skills put to the test with everything turned up to 11! It's going to be fun for all."

Ambrosia
Marie-Claire Rochat

The ancient Greeks believed that ambrosia -- the food and drink of the gods -- conferred immortality on those who partook of its sublime pleasures, and while I won't bank on that, I have to say that Ambrosia, the other worldly shop on Centre Street, is aptly named.

I stopped in the other day -- foolishly before lunch and preposterously believing I could walk out empty-handed. Instead I left with an artfully packaged parcel, brimming with succulent chocolate-dipped plums, a Mole Bar (organic dark chocolate seasoned with vanilla bean, chilies and cocoa nibs) and a stout glass bottle filled with a regal-colored powder: Vadouvan Curry. Not sure what to do with that, really, but I was taken by the packaging and the exotic name of the spice.

Ambrosia, Nantucket
Boxes of chocolate

Ambrosia, a divine little emporium which sells a tantalizing array of specialty spices and spice blends, exquisite handmade chocolates, salts and peppers, maple syrups and hot cocoas, is owned and lovingly run by Claudia Butler and Dylan Wallace -- two twenty/thirty-something Nantucketers who grew up plucking lobsters from traps, pulling fish from the sea and picking blackberries in season. The tale of how this young married couple came to open the shop is a great business story in itself, but now, five years in, Butler and Wallace are on the threshold of taking Ambrosia to the next level. And that will require the support of their devoted customers and a supportive community.

Ambrosia, Nantucket
Strawberry Chocolates

Through a recently launched Kickstarter campaign, they are looking to raise $34,000 to add a ventilation system to their kitchen on Nobadeer Farm Road. This will transform the facility from a cold process one to full commercial kitchen -- one that will be licensed for cooking. And that will allow Butler and Wallace to expand their operation in a multitude of ways.

"We cannot cook anything in the kitchen until we install a ventilation hood, complete with a two and a half story metal chimney," said Butler. "It's a safety feature required by the health department, and our kitchen cannot come fully to life without it."

To date, Butler and Wallace are over the halfway mark. "We're so happy with all the community support that Ambrosia's Kitchen Kickstarter has received thus far, with over 130 pledges and more than $21,000 pledged," Wallace told me, adding that they have until January 26th to reach their goal. If they don't hit their target number, the campaign will expire and they will be forced to seek other funding.

Ambrosia, Nantucket
Beach Plums

As an added incentive, Ambrosia has teamed up with the Rossini Club -- a rotating cast of semi-professional musicians -- to reward two qualified donors (at the $4000 and $6000 pledge levels) with an evening of classical chamber music performance paired with a six-course dinner.

"The Rossini Club's productions [have been] met with much enthusiasm, and now they have asked us to take on the menu planning and execution as they grow," said Butler. "We are so delighted to be involved in such an artistic appreciation and revelation of food."

The momentum has Butler and Wallace thinking ahead. They anticipate that their enhanced kitchen will be fully operational by the start of the summer season and, with that in mind, they plan to offer prepared foods at the shop and at the local Sustainable Nantucket Farmers & Artisans Market in the summer. They have already given serious thought to what their menu will look like: roasted root vegetables with Vadouvan (so glad I own that!), French lentils with Herbs de Provence, Hummus with island-grown Za'atar, as well as jams made with locally cultivated and wild fruits, condiments and sweet and savory tarts.

Ambrosia, Nantucket
Edible Landscaping

Additionally, they envision hosting a variety of culinary events and partnering with other organizations -- the idea of a concept venue where chefs can come together and experiment with new dishes is one idea that has been tossed around -- and they hope to expand their farm-to-table program with the schools.

Notably, Butler and Wallace aim to give back by making their commercial kitchen available for rent.

"We have been talking to young entrepreneurs who are eager to get their start and just need commercial kitchen space," said Butler. "We will work with the health department towards allowing us to make our kitchen available. Our building will not be the full time culinary incubator that the island needs, but we hope to be a step in that direction and will enable more people to get their start in the culinary landscape here."

Butler and Wallace can see themselves in those young entrepreneurs: they were once the ones seeking a kitchen.

About 10 years ago, and using the herbs and spices harvested from their organic garden (which they were already selling at the Farmer's Market), Butler started experimenting, infusing fresh lavender into dark chocolates. It was a hit. "Our customers absolutely adored them," she told me. "We found that chocolate is an excellent canvas for showing the flavors of fruits, flowers and spices. So chocolate became a regular part of our repertoire, and we were never able to make enough to satisfy everyone."

The timing was right when the tiny shop space opened on Centre Street.

The challenge of finding a suitable place to mix the spice blends and make the chocolates to stock the shelves was answered by a friend,
Jenny Bence, owner of The Green, who agreed to let Butler and Wallace use the kitchen after business hours. "Having the opportunity to use that kitchen was just the lucky break we needed to give the Ambrosia concept a chance," said Butler.

Clearly the concept was a good one. Since, they have acquired their own production facility with a room devoted to making chocolate, and they remain as hands-on as they ever were. What they cannot grow themselves, they get from local producers and from organic and fair trade growers around the world. Butler makes the chocolate centers and Wallace dips them. Together, with friends and a small staff, they keep the armoires of their little shop filled with the most delicious, most preciously packed edibles, year-round.

Butler and Wallace have a little over two weeks to meet their deadline. I echo the sentiments of Michelle Whelan, Executive Director of Sustainable Nantucket: "For a young start-up business to grow and thrive, it needs the support of the community."
