First Music Fest Hailed a Success, Despite Bad Weather
By Josh Gray

For the souls who braved last weekend's bad weather, the first Nantucket Music Festival was a fun and rewarding experience.

The weather forecast did not look good up to a week in advance of the first ever event, but that did not stop many islanders and visitors from attending, or discourage founders and organizers Cynthia Dareshori and Cheryl Emery.

"The rain did not dampen my spirits," said Emery, just hours after the two-day festival wrapped. "Living here on Nantucket for 30 years, you just learn to roll with it!"

With the main program running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, the festival saw a light attendance on Saturday due to heavy, sustained rain for much of the afternoon. Diehards still made the effort to be there, however, many decked out in full rain gear and finding shelter under the many tents around the property in-between musical sets. The VIP tent, which was located a few hundred yards from the main stage, was packed throughout the day with revelers less willing to get wet.

Though a fraction of ticket holders showed up on Saturday, those who did were observed having fun and enjoying the day's many acts. Under the shelter of the "Stage 2" tent, Ben Taylor, son of music legends James Taylor and Carly Simon, played a highlight set to a packed audience, performing his 2006 hit "You belong to Me" as well as covering his uncle, Livingston Taylor's classic "Isn't She Lovely", among many others.

Perhaps the set hardest hit by the weather on Saturday was the one performed by Steel Pulse, a well-known reggae band hailing from the U.K. But despite intense rain and wind, fans still made the best of it.

"One of the highlights of the weekend was dancing in the rain during Steel Pulse and looking around to see everyone with a smile on their face," added Emery, who could be found in the midst of the general admission crowd throughout most of the musical sets.

Saturday's headliner Dispatch, while probably playing to one of the smaller audiences they'd seen in some time, seemed energized and delighted to be there. They repeatedly thanked Dareshori and Emery, who themselves seemed to be all smiles throughout the festival.

Sunday's performances were highlighted by solid, energized set from Lucas Nelson (son of Willie Nelson) and the Promise of the Real, whose alt-country, Americana, rock 'n roll, drew a large crowd early in the day. With long guitar solos and even some on-stage acrobatics, it was easy to see why Nelson and his band are on the rise, having recently performed on "The Late Show with David Letterman".

As expected, Edward Sharpe and company delivered a robust, well-practiced set of songs to a more than enthusiastic crowd (the largest of the weekend), some of whom had traveled long distances just to see the one band play. At one point, Sharpe ventured into the crowd singing and asking fans to share some words with the rest of the audience. Many there had found great meaning and solace in the band's Billboard hit "Home," one fan saying it stood as a symbol of love in a long-term relationship, and another group saying they had traveled to hear the band in memory of a recently-passed friend. Sharpe remained in the crowd as light rain fell for the final song of the set, a track appropriately titled "All Wash Out", from the band's 2010 album, "Here".

Nantucket Music Festival continued . . .

A festival highlight for many was when 10-year-old Brandon Niederauer joined Sharpe and the band on stage to play electric guitar on a few of the songs. This young, guitar phenom, who had recently appeared on The Ellen Degeneres Show, wowed the Nantucket audience with blues-laden riffs and improvisational skills generally associated with much older, experienced musicians.

There were also many local musicians on the Tom Nevers property over the weekend, some of which opened the festival each day and preceded the billed acts during the evening.

"The Chuck Colley Band played Saturday night and the folks there were quite receptive to the show," said Chuck Colley, a former Nantucket High School teacher and well-known musician around the island. "The organizers had it together and the sound and stage crews were fantastic."

The festival was also an opportunity for local musicians to connect with musical peers from across the country, as well as a large group of music fans outside their usual base.

When asked if he would like to the play the festival again, Colley responded, "Absolutely."

Nantucket's own Coq Au Vin also played over the weekend.

"I think, all considered, it went very well," said lead singer Ingrid Feeney. "Annual festivals generally start slow and gain momentum as the years pass and I think this one is no different. Overall I think the festival added a significant degree of fun and excitement to the summer here for locals and tourists alike."

The talent brought in for the festival varied from national headliners like Dispatch and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, to lesser known acts brought to the festival thanks the extraordinary talent the organizers recognized they had.

A resident of the San Francisco, Calif. area, guitarist and vocalist Freddy Clarke wowed a packed out Stage 2 with his skills on the acoustic guitar. Brought to the festival by Dareshori, who met him at a party he played in San Francisco, Clarke said he had a great time at the festival and was excited about the connections he was making as a result.

"Yes!" said Clarke. "We are having a great time on Nantucket. This is my first time here and we are getting to do a lot and the audience today was just so great."

The ticketed, evening dinners featured Dispatch on Saturday and Bruce Hornsby on Sunday, and both appeared to be sold out events.

"The evening events were spectacular," said Emery. "The ambience and especially the music. . .we look forward to 2015."

In that vein, Emery is enthusiastic and encouraged by the response from attendees and musicians this year.

"I have heard nothing but positive feedback from everyone," she said. "People told me it was a couple of the most epic days on Nantucket they had ever had. What's next for us is a lot of debriefing internally, and we have already been approached by sponsors for next year. We just want to thank everyone for coming out and celebrating the music with us."

The Media Corner

Mitchell's Book Corner

I stopped by Mitchell's Book Corner to say hi to Charlie Graeber yesterday, (Friday, August 7), there signing his New York Times Bestseller and Entertainment Weekly Top 10 of 2013, "The Good Nurse".

While we were talking, Pat O'Brien (former CBS and NBC sportscaster and host of Access Hollywood and The Insider) dropped in to talk about his new book, "I'll Be Back Right After This: My Memoir", coming out on August 19. Pat will be signing his book at Mitchell's on Thursday, August 21.

Pat bought a copy of "The Good Nurse", Charlie vowed to buy a copy of Pat's book, and Mark Halperin, senior political analyst for Time magazine who co-wrote "Game Change" and Morning Joe regular, walked by engrossed in a phone call and buried under his baseball cap, only his voice recognizable.

Coast Guard Rescues 4 from Sinking Sail Boat

A Coast Guard Station Brant Point crew rescued four sailors from the water after their 40-foot sailing vessel sank in Nantucket Harbor on Friday, Aug. 8, 2014.

The sailors notified the Nantucket harbormaster via VHF radio that they had come into contact with another vessel and were taking on water in Nantucket Harbor at about 10:50 a.m.

A Station Brant Point 25-foot Response Boat-Small crew already underway, immediately diverted, rescued the four sailors from the water, and safely returned them to Station Brant Point.

"This was an outstanding job by all of the crew, ours and theirs," said Senior Chief Petty Officer Matthew Welsh, officer in charge of Station Brant Point. "The sailors were all wearing their lifejackets, and we were ready to respond. This was definitely a team effort."

There were no injuries reported. The incident is under investigation.

The disabled sailing vessel is reportedly outside the navigable channel and is clearly marked.

A musical by Jason Robert Brown that chronicles the five year life of a marriage, from meeting to break-up . . . or from break-up to meeting, depending on how you look at it. The Last Five Years is a personal look at the relationship between a writer and an actress told from both points of view. Music and alternately humorous and heartfelt lyrics, The Last Five Years looks at the young couple's hope that love will endure the test of time. The New York Times' Ben Brantley praised Tony Award-winning Mr. Brown for his 'sparkling facility as a composer' and his fluid mix of 'diverse styles.'
