Dave Matthews Band to Reissue Their First Album Recorded at The Muse on Nantucket
By Josh Gray

Many big bands have come through Nantucket over the years, but possibly none as big as the Dave Matthews Band

Back in 1993, Mike O'Reilly was the new owner of The Muse, a 20 year old business and longstanding, island nightlife hotspot. He inherited a list of touring bands hailing from all over, including a group of bands from the southern United States who found some limited success touring the northeast. One of these bands was a large - larger than most - group called the Dave Matthews Band.

"There was definitely a buzz on the street before the shows," said O'Reilly of the 1993 series of three concerts that were recorded and eventually included in the band's first (independently released) album. The shows marked the band's second stint on island, as they had performed at The Muse in the summer of 1992. Now, more than 20 years later, the band announced last week they will reissue the album on Tuesday, June 17th.

Remember Two Things was the Dave Matthews Band's first recording and was originally released on November 9, 1993. The recordings of "Ants Marching" and "Tripping Billies" at The Muse on August 17th of the same year contributed to the final cut of the album that would end up being the foundation for one of the most iconic and popular bands of the last 20 years.

Dave Matthews Band

"It was an incredible three nights of wonderful music and everyone was into them. They hung out with everyone after the show and it was just good vibes and good times for everyone," O'Reilly said of the 400 person capacity crowd of mostly year round and summer residents.

The Nantucket tracks were joined on the album by "Recently", "One Sweet World", "The Song that Jane Likes", "Minarets", "Seek Up", "I'll Back You Up", and "Christmas Song". The band's line-up at the time included Matthews, on vocals and guitars, Carter Beauford on percussion and vocals, Stafan Lessard on bass, the late LeRoi Moore on woodwinds and vocals and Boyd Tinsley on violin and vocals.

"The thing about them was that the music was different and they had a unique style and sound, and they've proved they're special by still being out there today," said O'Reilly.

At the time of the original release, the album debuted high on the college charts and was eventually certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. It was officially released by RCA Records in 1997 and certified platinum in 2002.

In addition, the band will release Live Trax 30: The, Muse Nantucket, Massachusetts on the same day. A two-disc compilation containing songs recorded during all three shows (August 16-18, 1993), the release contains material considered extremely rare as there are no known "taper" (bootleg) copies in existence.

O'Reilly said he was unaware of the upcoming reissues until friends alerted him to the press release and resulting coverage days after it was announced in the media. Produced by RCA Records, representatives did not respond to a request to interview members of the band by this publication.

DMB is just one of many well-known bands to grace the stage at The Muse over the years. O'Reilly readily recalled performances by John Mayer, the Los Lonely Boys, George Clinton, Guster, Galactic, 10,000 Maniacs and the Sugar Hill Gang early in their careers.

Though excited by the news, O'Reilly said he has no plans to mark the reissue and live album with a special event, though, he said wryly, he might be willing to host the band if they were interested in performing an anniversary concert on Nantucket.

As unlikely as that possibility might be given their immense fame and busy summer touring schedule, O'Reilly said he is excited none-the-less.

"It's a great honor," he said. "I can't wait to hear the whole production and I'm now getting tons of emails with people commenting and remembering what a great time those shows were."

The releases will be available for pre-sale beginning June 13th and for purchase on June 17th on CD, vinyl and digital download on www.davematthewsband.com.

Many thanks, Bill Connell
