Symbolic Landscapes Coming to Spotlight Gallery

#2: The Receptive. Oil on birch panel, 20" x 20."
|
Each time she starts a painting, Elizabeth Nelson throws coins to reveal a sign from the "I Ching." Then, "I contemplate the result as I think or dream an image," Nelson says. "Symbolic Landscapes" will open in the Spotlight Gallery Friday, September 2. This series has been a work in progress since 2012. Some of the series are the New England landscapes she is known for, but many of the new works include elements of the "I Ching" in the form of symbols, geometric juxtapositions, and themes like waiting, approaching, or retreating. The opening reception for "Symbolic Landscapes" will be held Friday, September 2 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Spotlight Gallery, 136 State Street in Montpelier. The exhibit will be shown through October 28. Read more about Elizabeth Nelson's painting in this week's Featured Story.

People on the Move: Congratulations Troy Hickman!
We are pleased that Troy Hickman has accepted the position of arts education manager after working at the Council for almost three years as grants and information specialist. In his new position, Troy oversees the arts education grant programs, Poetry Out Loud, and the Teaching Artist Roster. "I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to speak up, every single day, about the importance of learning in, about, and through the arts," said Troy. "I look forward to meeting new people and working with familiar people in new ways. Mostly, though, I'm excited about seeing and talking about the great, innovative arts instruction that takes place every day in Vermont." Read more about Troy here.
