Advocacy - and Chocolate - at the State House. A Successful Day All Around!
A big thanks goes out to everyone who reached out to their state representatives with the important message that they support public funding for the arts in Vermont. Nearly 200 messages were sent to legislators asking them to establish the Vermont Creative Network and to support the allocation for the Arts Council in Governor Shumlin's budget. It's not too late to express your support! Visit the Council's Action Center to find out how to contact your legislators.

Arts Collector's Cards Score a BIG Win on Arts Advocacy Day
"I value the arts because they build happier, healthier, and stronger communities, hearts, and minds"
Katie Trautz, East Montpelier
More than 50 Vermonters, including Chandler Center for the Arts Director Katie Trautz, demonstrated their passion for the arts by creating cards with a message about why the arts are important to them and their communities. On Arts Advocacy Day, cards were distributed to each of the 180 legislators, distributed in the State House cafeteria, and projected on a screen in the Card Room. Passers-by on the way to committee meetings and legislative votes paused to read the heart-felt quotes penned by arts supporters from all over the state. Their smiles made it clear the message had been communicated! "Education in the arts is important because it allows individuals to access their inner nature, encouraging expression, fluidity, and creativity."
Lev Belford, Woodstock
If you created an Arts Collector's Card and would like to have a copy, let us know here, and we will gladly send it to you!

Maggie Fitzgerald, Rice Memorial High School
|
Maggie Fitzgerald is Vermont Poetry Out Loud Champion!
Maggie Fitzgerald projected confidence, calm, and just a bit of drama as she recited "The Nail," by C.K. Williams, one of the three poems that led her to the top spot in the 2016 Vermont Poetry Out Loud State Championship. The Rice Memorial High School senior will join other state winners in Washington D.C. on May 3 and 4 to compete for the national title ( watch the webcast here). Anna Van Dine, a senior at Harwood Union High School, was the runner up. The finals, which were taped at Vermont PBS earlier this month, will be broadcast on Thursday, April 28, at 8 p.m.
