How Much Did You Spend on Me?

Harold Shank PhotoDear OVU Alumni & Friends,

When we open gifts at holiday time or on special occasions, one of the unvoiced questions we ask revolves around cost and value: How much did you spend on me?

We do this calculation not just with presents, but with all of life. Think about how we measure things by cost:
  • That's too much
  • No, give me the generic
  • I can get it for less
  • That's more than the going rate
  • Will you take 10% off?
  • Do a cost comparison first
  • Buy low, sell high
So, how much is a child worth? What do we spend on our college-bound son? Can we afford to send our daughter there?

Clearly Christian education has its costs, and parents do well to compare. However, the core of Christian education revolves around something beyond cost.

Fundamentally, we measure students not by what they can pay, or by their ACT/SAT score, or their high school GPA, or by their won-loss record. Instead, we treasure young people because they are valuable to God.

If we simply did Christian education by cost, we would find another business. Instead we find each life significant because God created, God blessed, and God died for every student who comes our way.

That perspective raises a whole other set of issues. Christian education takes up answering those questions.

What are we willing to spend?

Washington Monthly College Guide
Washington Monthly ranks OVU Among the Top 50 Baccalaureate Colleges Nationwide

Ohio Valley University recently earned top praise from the Washington Monthly, which ranked Ohio Valley University among the top 50 baccalaureate colleges to attend nationwide.

Unlike other similar guides, Washington Monthly focuses not just on what colleges can do for just students, but what colleges are doing for the country. The ranking report evaluates whether colleges are educating low-income students, or just catering to the affluent. It dives into how institutions are improving the quality of their teaching and whether they are ensuring students receive the most for their money by keeping tuition rates affordable...

OVU Launches New Intensive English Program (IEP)

Ashley Fugett
Ashley Fugett
Intensive English Director
The 2012 fall semester saw the inauguration of a brand new course of study for students from around the globe. The 16-hour two-semester program is designed to guide international students to a level of English proficiency and fluency that will allow them to succeed in regular university courses. Courses include reading, writing, listening, speaking, as well as training in English mechanics such as grammar and pronunciation.

OVU alumna Ashley Fugett developed and now directs the I.E.P. program. After completing a degree at OVU in 2006, Fugett spent two years teaching English in China and then went on to earn her M.Ed. from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, AZ. She returned to OVU in 2008 and served as Director of Academic Support Services until she took her present position with IEP...

First Internship Fair a Success!

OVU held its first Internship Fair for those interested in working in ministry on November 8, 2012. Five churches from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York participated. Fifteen OVU students came with resumes in hand for interviews.

The students were thrilled to see the work these churches had in mind for them. Most students who came reported to Dr. Michael Moss, Dean of the College of Bible and Behavioral Sciences, that there were at least three churches that interested them. The recurring refrain from the churches was, "This was a wonderful experience. Now we have five OVU students that we would like to hire. We have to have to go home and decide to which one we will offer a position..."

Parkersburg Stepping Stones Dinner & Auction a Delightful Holiday Success!

As OVU student Ethan Ash played violin in the background, friends of OVU met and mingled around tables of silent auction items. An elegant dinner, prepared and served by Aladdin Food Service, heightened the excitement of the evening, making way for a rousing Servant Auction hosted by the always lovely Marlene Turner. Marlene kept the auction lively with her engaging humor, exciting bidding wars, and an informative slide presentation. By the end of the evening, $6315.00 was raised and all went home happy and hale.

Many thanks to all who helped make the evening delightful.
